It is said that there used to be an ancient Buddhist temple called“ Shofukuji Temple” here, which is presumed to have been built by Princess Ohku,a daughter of Emperor Tenmu, sometime between the Seventh and Eighth centuries to console the spirit of her deceased father. This site is now used as a historical park with an exhibition pavilion to display the reconstructed Main Hall (Kondo) as well as the unearthed articles including Buddhist images in relief on unglazed clay tiles (senbutsu).
