After finding reccommendations for Suzukisan and his Real surf school via google, we decided to take the plunge and book some lessons while we were on holiday in Shimoda. We were a family group of three who were all varying abilities from absolute beginner to intermediate. Based out of his surf shop near Tatadohama beach (on the main highway from Shimoda), he offers board & wet suit hire, lessons and advice. His two hour lessons were well thought out and great fun, and his teaching was awesome. As someone who speaks little Japanese his instruction was clear and his sense of humour infectious. Even my father, the 'silver surfer' at 61, managed to ride some waves on his first day thanks to Suzukisan. We can't wait till our next family outing back to this terrific coastal area of Japan. Compared to other places I have surfed, this was the best in terms of mixed ability and suitable for absolute beginners. If you are heading this way and love active holidays, this is a must on the schedule.

We come here so my husband can surf...I generally hide under an umbrella. Nice beach, and off season..really relaxing. We usually come in May-June or Oct-Nov. In summer, lots of people are here and the beach is packed with families. If you can come off season, the water won't be warm, but it is pretty. Great for photos..and relaxing. Small children really enjoy digging here in the sand..good place for families. Not huge waves, but there are always surfers here..hoping.. and surfing the small waves. Nice sandy beach..a restroom is available..and some sort of showers. Bring food and drinks though.. maybe only in summer you can buy something to eat. Off season, we carry our own. One of the nicer beaches in my opinion.

Just 3 hours away from Tokyo it is almost hard to believe that you can find this pristine environment. Great for relax, swim, surf and for people watching. Since beach is shallow it is also good for kids. Escape routes are well marked should they be needed. Off-season there are just vending machines if you need to quench your thirst. The hungry need to take a taxi to closest restaurant.

Very nice beach and not overcrowded (we were there a Saturday in June) not overdeveloped, so bring your own beach gear including shade. very good way of spending a day at the beach.

The ocean is so beautiful, blue colored and clear. The sand is a brownish color, not white like I'm use to. The crowds are typical on a public beach. What I like is the scenery of rock formations in the ocean.

We were here in August so the beach was very busy with Japanese holiday makers. However, the beach is big enough for you to find a spot. The beach is clean and the water is very clear. A great place for surfing or body boarding.

This beach is really nice and clean. The water is clear and with a beautiful blue color. We were almost the only gaijin there and we felt very good. As always in Japan the people were nice and polite with each other. Funny fact (for us European) : at a moment everybody stood up and people began to CLEAN the beach ! There are lots of surfers and bodyboarders so be careful with the strong waves.

We visited Shimoda as a day trip from Ito, although you can get here from Tokyo on a limited express train. When we arrived in Shimoda, we asked the opinion of the people in the information booth on the best beaches. This beach is a little less busy than the more popular ones but was absolutely great. The ocean is shallow and gradual for quite a distance which makes it good for kids, and in August when we were there the waves were excellent for wave boarding. Vendors were renting wave boards on the beach. There are also bathrooms, showers, a rustic restaurant and shop to get food, with a patio. There is a bus that runs to Tatadohama from the train station, but the cab was quicker and reasonable.
