When you're in Shimoda, never leave without visiting the Mount Nesugatayama observatory. Located in Higashihongo, Shimoda-shi, Shizuoka, you'll be able to see an amazing view of the Izu Peninsula coast and the Pacific Ocean. How to get there? Take the Shimoda ropeway from the ropeway station across from Izukyu-Shimoda station to reach the observatory. And on the top of the mountain, there is the Aizen-myo-odo temple. If you want to relax and see the beauty of the entire island of Shimoda, then this is the right place for you to visit.

Going to Mount Nesugatayama is beyond my expectations. Riding the ropeway up high and looking down the town of Shimoda is so beautiful, strolling the well-maintained gardens and viewing the ocean/Izu 7 islands by the side just to good to believe, calm feel and so soothing. The place is not big, but my husband and I stayed more than 2 hours just to loose ourselves.

The rope way does not go all the way to the top. The short hike is pleasant, the gardens lovely, the views spectacular. Not sure if it is wheelchair accessible, but there were lots of stairs and paths. There could be workarounds I didn't spot. Interesting Temple/Shrine at the top. Look for the vending machines. Restaurant, souvenir shop, restrooms. People come up for lunch.

The flowers bloom in the Mt. Nesugata Natural Park in Shimoda, Izu Peninsula, Japan. The view of Shimoda Port from the summit was magnificent.

A ride up-and-down every 15 minutes. The mountain top has an observation platform, a souvenir shop and nicely landscaped path with a lot of steps requiring hiking up and down, around the top. Nice views of the town, harbor and valley. Best bargain, a must-do activity in Izukyu-Shimoda.

Our weather was perfect, so skies and ocean were blue. This ropeway gave us wonderful views of all this from way up high. We could even see the black ships coming and going and imagine Perry making his original arrival. There were also abundant beautiful flowers and birds singing all along the climb from the top of the ropeway to the observatory.

As expected when you go up a mountain, there are great views to be had. The carriages are not to big so you may have to wait a few minutes to get the next one. It's not so busy during the week so we were lucky to get on without having to wait. It's only a five minute ride to the top station which isn't the top of the mountain. Not too strenuous a climb through beautiful flower gardens and you're there.
Nice way to spend an hour or so.

The ropeway starts in front of the station and has intervals of about 15 mins. The view at the top is beautiful!
There are some basic amenities and shops available at the top. There is a little and pleasant hike through the woods. We had a baby stroller and it was difficult to use it at the top, but the shop owner was courteous to park the stroller at the shop for some time. A full 5 stars goes for it :-)
