The Kamoso Garden is a flower and bird paradise in its 50.000 m² of scenic landscape, located 15 km northwest from Kakegawa City downtown, at Shizuoka Prefecture. The Kamoso Garden is currently challenging to incorporate organic cultivation where probiotics, natural composts, biological control and ducklings play a fundamental role at a sustainable nature environment. In the site, there is the “Kamoso Shoya residence” (residence of village headman in Edo Period), a treasury of history and culture with its original architect for 246 years, passing along the harmony between the natural scenery Japanese traditional culture. As main attractions:  Iris Garden: During the blooming season in May and June, it will able to see more than fifty thousand flowers of 500 variants in a 20.000 m² area. Visitors will also be welcomed by more than a hundred ducklings and their families.  Hydrangeas Garden: The 3,000 m² greenhouse exhibits one of the nation’s most popular hydrangeas collection developed at our garden, which can be seen on May and June, the same season as the Iris garden. Be amazed by the “ Hydrangeas Hill” , a flower tower made of 600 vases in 50 variants of hydrangeas, including the so popular “Dance Party”.  Bird Interacting Area: Since 2016, divided into two areas (indoor and outdoor) for observing and interacting. More than 50 water birds like stilts, flamingos, spoonbills, and mandarin ducks are living at the 200 m² indoor area; and more than 200 quails, peacocks and silks are waiting the visitors at the huge 600 m² outdoor area.  Projects for July/ August: As part of the “Children learning place for Lifelong learning” in Kakegawa City, the park will provide many activities as exhibitions of insects on its habitat, bird interacting areas, trout releasing at clear streams, flight training with raptors, etc.

I spent a couple of days driving around the Mt Fuji area exploring and stumbled across this park. I was missing my pets at home (1 dog and 5 birds) so I was excited to check it out. Wish I hadn’t. About 6 hawks in an enclosure tethered to individual ground roosts. There was no greenery, no movement for them, it was abhorrent. The state of some of the birds was atrocious as was the small boring cages they were kept in. Even the larger enclosures were bare of greenery and toys, or things to keep them amused. And then the penguins, OMG, I thought I would cry on the spot. There were two baby owls on the ticket counter, just perched there (I’m sure they were tethered), I thought they were statues or toys and then I saw an eye blink. I’m sure they’re just there all day bored out of their minds. And the large owl glass cases were absolutely despicable. I didn’t stay long and hated it. If you love birds, or any animal for that matter, please don’t support this place and save yourself the heartbreak.
