The chapel is gorgeous and full of art. We took loads of pictures and enjoyed being in a place so rich with history. The tour guide, Michéle, was lovely and let us in super close to closing time so we could enjoy the place. It was a lovely place to visit as a family and a nice little half-hour tourist stop!

The church is very well maintained and the guide who accompanied us did an excellent job. I'm talking about a small church but full of points of interest. It's worth a visit.

If you are in the area and have 30 or 40 minutes to spare this is worth a visit as the building is in excellent condition and the history is interesting

We were recommended visiting this chapel by the Office de Tourism and were not disappointed. The initial welcome from the chapel’s ‘meet and greeter” Michelle was warm and inviting and her explanation of the building was exemplary.
The brief history given was further expanded by a very good handout in English which placed the building in context.
The interior of the chapel is staggering with the ceiling and walls covered in religious paintings that take one’s breath away and an altar that rivals in splendour those seen in a number of cathedrals.
One plus factor that the visitor has time to sit upstairs in pews hundreds of years old to examine the paintings at leisure and own pace to fully appreciate the vista and the devotion of the movement that created the chapel. Remember to take binoculars if like me you wish to look at the celling more clearly.

La Chapelle des Penitents Noirs,is a wonderful Chapel, with a story that stepped straight out of a Dan Brown novel, only true and plausible. The audio commentary is very good with atmospheric music .The ceiling is truly beautiful and worth climbing the stairs to the top.It was a shame the lights weren't working that day as it must be seen. The altar is very impressive, very baroque in nature,a real homage to the greater glory of God.I sat on one of the pews which date back to 1480 and mused about the hundreds of people who had used them.No sleeping through Mass on these seats, they are very hard. The large paintings around the walls of the Chapel are very impressive.
This is a must for anyone visiting the area.

What an amazing chapel. A little more about the Black Penitent movement would have been useful but I looked it up later so no loss. An awful lot of work to make but well done the City for preserving it all.
The lady on reception gave useful advice for us to make the most practical method of visiting. She also suggested other places to visit in the area.

What a find, we visited here in September and was lucky enough to find it was the European Heritage day so evry place visited was free, however if you are in Villefranche this is well worth seeing for the decor. Don't be put off by the exterior, inside is another world. I haven't posted photos because you really need to see for yourself.

Well worth a visit! Splendid interior.
We had a detailed audio commentary in French; not sure if there's an English option but there is an English leaflet.
You can get a combined ticket for this, the Chartreuse and a couple of others (4 for 3).
