Handan is not a city many tourists visit, but if you happen to go there, the city museum is well worth your time. The provincial museum in Shijiazhuang, of course, is better, but this one has some pretty good artifacts. Handan was the capital of the State of Zhao in the Warring States, and also the home of Cizhou Porcelain, so it has the best collections of those artifacts in China. Also an ancient coin gallery and a pretty good collection of Buddhist sculptures. The grottoes at Xiangtangshan are about a half hour (by taxi) west of Handan, and quite interesting in their own right. Full disclosure: I'm not a "normal" tourist. So I am more enthusiastic than most people about museums. Since all museums in China, except the National in Beijing, are local in nature, you must visit every province if you want to get the history of each region. China has seriously upgraded all their museums in the last five years, so that nearly every major city with any sort of history will have a good, modern history museum, like that at Handan. The one downside is that Handan, like most of Hebei, is fairly dingy and polluted.
