First off, I have been to a few stalactite stalagmite caves around that I was a bit apprehensive about the "quality" of the sightseeing. However, it was quite different to what I have seen in other places. The cavern is not very big in terms of area, but the ceiling is huge as the water has carved it out. The stalactites stalagmites are quite tall which give a sense of majesty. When compared to the Reed Flute Cave in Guilin, this is much bigger. Also much better than the puny Zhaoqing Cave. The Lianzhou Undergroud River is pretty comparable. I will rate the Lianzhou experience as 5 stars.

However, the experience for this cave is a bit different. They bunch together a number of tourists and then guide them through the cave with an introduction to each area of interest.

My mandarin is quite poor, so I hung back from the crowd and took my time taking my photos and videos.

The one negative aspect I can say is that in certain areas they have moving lighting, so much so that it looks like a disco rather than a solemn tourism area. It could really be toned down.

There is a swimming pool near this area which is supposed to be catering to the resort cottages in the vicinity. But it was dry and in bad repair. The organisers had also arrange some fruit tasting at a "festival". The folks there were quite inviting and chilling around with some karaoke singling. Obviously, this is not a regular feature, but maybe one off during the season.

All in all, an unexpected surprise and pleasant time.

First, let’s get the location correct, this place is not in Guizhou. Guizhou is a province about 200 miles or so north-north-west! The place is near the city of Hezhou, maybe that’s what whoever wrote the title meant.

Ziuyun cavern was visited in the afternoon on day two of our three-day bus trip from Guangzhou to a few places in the south of Guangxi province. The previous day we’d been to Wuzhou and seen the Qilou Building (TA reviewed) and then taken a bus up Wuzhou Mt. Baiyun Park (TA reviewed).

In the morning we already been to Baili Shuimo Park to see the mountains, and then to a persimmon market for a little retail therapy buying the fruit that the area was famous for.

Before coach disgorged us at the entrance of the site, our tour guide announced that we could either walk the 20 minutes to the cavern or take the electric bus. Of course, being fit and reasonably healthy we took the bus! Chinese 20-minute estimates are always optimistic.

The entrance to the cavern is indicated by a sign to the Metaverse. No idea why, but I suppose they’re trying to be trendy! At the entrance we were told we’d have to wait for the walkers to arrive, so we could all go through together. A couple of busloads of grumbling visitors didn’t appeal to the kids on the door, so the lights and sounds were turned on and we were soon ushered through the door leading to the bowels of the earth.

Well, there’s lots of lights, noises, steps both up and down, paths, pools, and of course illuminated stalactites to keep you entertained. You can even have your photo taken which can be collected at the exit. SWMBO reckoned her Honor phone was just as good as their camera, so no business from us

The walk through the cavern and stops for gawping took about 40 minutes. Inside the cavern it must have been 10C warmer than outside and we were glad to get out into the cool evening air. The sun had gone down while we were inside.
SWMBO informed me that the cave was probably used by Mao’s men to hide from the Nationalists. I wonder if there were a few still hiding as I’m sure we only saw a fraction on the cavern.

Anyway, outside I noticed that the cavern is part of a holiday complex with up-market huts, spas, and a huge swimming pool. A nice area to relax for a day or two.

Then it was back to the entrance, onto the coach and off to a hotel in Huzhou city for the second night and final night of our bus trip.

I have been to other caverns before, that in Deqin, Guilin, Shaoqin, Lianzhou, etc. This amazes me, still. Its rocks, with their own imagination, inspire visitors in many ways.
