It was not so easy to get in Sanniang Wan. I had a train from Nanning tot Qinzhou, a motorbike taxi to the bus station, where I took a bus to Sanniang Wan. You come then at the entrance of a protected area park, where you have to pay 30 RMB. Then you can take again a motorbike taxi to the center of the village. All togehter with the waiting times it took me 6 hours.
But it was worthwile. What a beautiful, peaceful and authentic place. It is so nice then to walk along the beach or to climb the special big round stone rocks to have a look over the sea. I went out for a boot trip to see the dolphins. I have seen some, but it goes to fast so you have no time to take a picture. On the sea in the open boat is apart from the dolphins a nice experience, when you have spent the last weeks in a city. The sunset made it romantic. You have plenty of possibilities to eat there if you are looking for fish or sea food. You can taste the freshiess of the sea in your food. It is delicious, especially the white clams and the prawns. I have spent my night there in a guesthouse/hostel, called "sea view".

Sanniang Bay has old wooden boats, a charming fishing village, with nice people, cheap food, and dolphin watching trips; it is not a fancy beach resort. The local people, and most of the tourists, are nice and friendly. This a great place to see traditional fishing culture, with most of the fishing families working along the beach or in their home courtyards just across from the beach. There's even a traditional wooden boat builder right in the village. At the eastern end of the village is a large rock outcrop with a Qing Dynasty mini "fort" that overlooks the bay.
The Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) or Chinese White dolphins as their called locally are the big attraction. These dolphins are rare in China, outside of Hong Kong, and Sanniang Bay has one of the biggest pods. There are friendly and can usually be seen on a dolphin watching trip on one of the many big and small boats at the main beach. This is also a good place to see migratory birds depending on the time of year.
For food, there are many small mom and pop restaurants that serve local seafood in the fronts of homes along the village street. At the small main beach there are food stalls and barbeque tents where you can relax for hours eating, drinking and watching the fishing boats leave for a night of fishing. The beach is more of a working beach, so it's quite dirty in some places, however, ladies in bamboo hats sweep it clean every morning. There is a small ecolodge, Ocean Lodge, at the western end of the beach that does SCUBA training and can arrange local tours. There are also some small basic guesthouses in the village.
Sanniang Bay is one of my favorite places in China. The people are nice, the food is good and cheap, and you can see dolphins and other wildlife you likely won't see anywhere else in China. Don't come here for the beach or to stay in a fancy hotel, come here for a unique China experience.

This is also a charming bay where you can take a close view of the fishing scene, several fishing boats on the shore--- quite a restful and peaceful sight. If weather permits you can take a small fishing boat to see the famous Chinese white dolphins. I was so fortunate that have seen them and took some pictures, what a wonderful experience!

It was well worth the effort to travel out to this beautiful spot. Classically beautiful photographs of quintessential Chinese fishing village, stretched along the coast surrounding the bay. Some of my favourite Qinzhou photo shots were taken here. If the weather isn't rough they can even take you out in a small fishing boat to see the famed white dolphins (unfortunately it was too rough the day we were there)
