Very cheap to go see and it is worth visiting to support this site. You can do it in an hour. We ate a the little food stand. We had a pupusa and it was good as well as frozen chocolate covered fruit. It was a hot day...wear mosquito repellent.

I was born and raised in El Salvador and have been back and forth several times. I recently went on a trip back home and brought my girlfriend and some of her friends with me. We visited San Andres ruins on 1/21/2010. Upon entering you pass by a armed guard at the front gate and then a 2nd upon passing a well secured, or what seemed like a well secured area with a booth. Unsuspectingly we parked our van and went into the park. There is a small museum with some artifacts and then a larger area with ruins. We were in the park a total of possibly 45 minutes. When we returned back to our car we noticed the lock had been tampered with and several of our backpacks had been taken.

When we told the guards, they got on their cellphones and supposedly called the police. They were never apologetic and seemed extremely suspicious. They said that police had set up roadblocks and that another SUV had pulled up next to our van, we were parked in a very empty parking lot with no cars around, and left not too long after we got back to our car. The armed guard claimed that the parking lot was a high risk break in area and that they have had several other similar crimes in the past. Extremely surprising seeing as how they have armed guards patrolling and protecting the area. After waiting for a very long time, we decided to leave as it was getting dark and we felt almost threatened by the guards and those at the gate. We were told that the police would call us if anything turned up.

On our way home we never saw any roadblocks and are almost certain there was no call ever placed to them. Avoid this place at all costs, the ruins are hardly worth the risk of being robbed here. The armed guards leave you with a false sense of security, and they are more than likely the ones robbing people.

We spent a couple of hours walking around this interesting historical site. There is a good museum with history of the pyramids and information about some of the artefacts and indigo factory. Outside, the place is fairly small (compared with some of the Mexican pyramids) but we were free to walk around most of it. There were several armed guards during our visit and we felt completely safe. Our car was also quite safe in the car park. There is a small selection of artisan stalls but without too much in the way of good souvenirs. The indigo factory was closed but we were not sure why. At the pyramids, there was no information about what we were looking at. All the info was back in the museum and it was difficult to remember and place everything we had seen.
One small bonus, local residents get a discount on the entrance fee.

San Andres didn't have as much to offer into the insight of Mayan culture as Joya de Ceren which is a UNESCO site. Skip this one.

The accidental discovery of a pyramid led to this excavation and what you see is a clearing in the forest that served as an ancient Mayan site

Stopped here after visiting Joya de Cerén (it's very close). $3 for foreigners and entrance includes the very good museum/interpretive center and access to the site. Museum panels in Spanish and English. Very interesting history here! Few crowds. Make sure you see the indigo factory before you leave. Clean bathrooms!

San Andrés is not a huge Mayan complex but it is very much worth visiting it. For starts, the museum is outstanding. The site itself has both excavated and yet to be excavated structures and it is very peaceful here. I enjoyed my couple of hours here and recommend a visit, especially because it is close to Joya de Ceren.
