We came back for a second catch up with A1. The walking in and around Kalaw is superb, the scenery breathtaking and the people warm and welcoming. Take more than one day if you can to explore before you do your long trek. Aung Phyoe, Summer and their family are more than just guides. They help you feel like family members. The company has real vision for what it is possible to offer a huge demographic of customers. Their aim is to help you to see you as much of the area they live in and love as possible. Since not everyone is agile or inclined to tramping, A1 is looking to add a return train trip to see some of the countryside that would otherwise be difficult to access for those less hardy or robust. The train passes through the Elephant, Horse and Dog stations (and past their corresponding mountains) and beyond . The route even has zig zag tracks in some of the steeper sections! Sound fun? It should. You can also ride the train all the way to Shwe Nyaung and Inle. So if some of your party is not into trekking they can catch the train and meet you there. Sure, if you are confident and capable you could arrange and self- guide your own trip. But don't. You will miss out on the brilliant personal stories that only local Kalaw guides can bring all while feeling part of the A1 family. Having now walked from Kalaw to Inle Lake (In Dein) we will definitely return to A1 Trekking Kalaw and explore the area on foot from Kalaw as a base. Contact AP and Summer now and arrange a trip.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE.
We had our 3 most incredible days in Myanmar doing the trek kalaw to Inle with A1.
We booked a private guide for 2 to be able to go at our rythme and ask every questions to him. And this is definitely worth it...
Our guide Yé Linn has been incredible, he spoke perfectly english, he was able to answer to all our questions and he showed us so many things on the way. I would like again to thank him for this trip as it could not have been better.
The food is also amazing, our chief Ku Chit prepared local dishes with all his heart and it was really good...
Sanlinn the manager was also really responsive by email before the trek and everything went smooth on the organisation. What I liked also is that they really don't want to be the biggest company or to do the trek whatever the conditions. For example they don't take group bigger than 6 which allow you to immerge yourself with the population compared to a 12 people one which looks really invasive in a small village...
People in Myanmar are really kind and it i amazing to see that if you dare to discuss, smile, they will give you back 1000 times.
So thanks again Yé Linn and Ku Chit, it was again incredible and we strongly recommend A1.

We did a 2 day trek to Inle lake with A1 and absoluely loved the expirience. Our guide hlasoe could not have been better. He spoke excellent english and we had very interesting discussions about Inle and all sorts of other things. He really did make the expirience. The food provide was some of the best we had in Myanmar and could not fault the amounts of food, so much. The overnight accommodation was very comfy considering and the family very welcoming.
The trekking route itself is quite busy but hlasoe did take us on some alternative routes to try and find some quieter spots. Including a never to be forgotten walk round/through a rocket festival.
In terms of the company Mr Sanlinn was incredibly helpful both before arrival, when we met and also after we finished our tour. He was only too happy to help us with a boat driver for Inle lake and continued to help via email.
I would highly reccomend A1 and if you can request hlasoe as a guide.

Our guide "Epi" was just greqt always try to find the good path to be sure we ll be alone. We stayed in authentic places and always had great dinner with too much food. As i m a cook we share a cooking course with Epi who was just memorable.

We did four half day hikes with guides San Linn and his brother AP from A1 trekking agency of Kalaw. They were well organized and we had some wonderful nature and cultural experiences. Mr. San Linn was very flexible and sensitive to our preferences, and we enjoyed our interaction with him, his family and with the people we met on the way. It was very clear that he is well liked by the local communities and it is easy to understand why. Highly recommended!

We enjoyed the 3-day trek with A1 from Kalaw to Inthain (on Inle Lake) but, to be honest, there was nothing unique about the scenery or the overall experience. The scenery on the first and third days wasn't special. The scenery on the second day was lovely, but it was reminiscent of Tuscany or Greece, rather than anything uniquely Burmese. The first homestay was also very basic - think African village hut with a barrel of dirty cold water for 'washing' (and, obviously, a squat toilet in a shack). The second homestay was more pleasant. The food was also good. The guide (Sanlinn's brother) was friendly and helpful, and gave us some information about the local food and crops. But other information was limited and often hard to understand. We were also a bit disappointed about the lack of information provided about the different village communities through which we passed. We had basically no interaction with local people at all.
For information, the trek is not difficult. We walked about 5 hours per day at a slow pace with regular stops every one or two hours. If you are a serious walker, you may find the slow pace a bit frustrating.
Final point: It was probably just poor communication, but I was a little frustrated to be presented with a bill at the end of the trek for an extra Khat 30,000 for a taxi from the airport to Kalaw. In email correspondence before the trek, Sanlinn said "We will pick you up from the airport", so I had assumed that the pick-up was included in the (pre-agreed) price. Khat 30,000 is a lot in Burma, so it left me with a bad feeling to be stung with a bill of this size at the end without prior warning.

The organisation of our day trek was straight forward at their office near the centre of Kalaw, but they can be contacted by other means. We wanted to see around the beautiful town of Kalaw high in the mountains which is surprisingly cool despite being in the middle of the hot season. Our guide picked us up from our hotel and we set off for a 4-5 hour trek. Our guide spoke very good English and we thoroughly enjoyed talking to him about the local area as well as about Myanmar in general. We had lunch in a small village half way round our trip and then continued our circuit back to Kalaw. This seems to be the best way to see the area and although you can do these walks solo, it was great to have someone to chat with who knew the local area and people. Guide + taxi transfer + lunch for 2 people cost under $40. Good value in my opinion
Highly recommend

Hi,
According to Lonely Planet both ways are possible but I would doublechecked the information to make sure it is possible as I didn't meet any groups coming the other way but the itinerary is probably different.

Hi, I want to do a 1 day trekking tour for tomorrow in Kalaw. I travel alone so it would be nice to join a small group. I need to get the night bus tomorrow evening to yangoon. Is that possible?

Hi,
I don't think so unless they offer 1 day trek around Kalaw and they get back to Kalaw the same day. However, the home stay in a tribe village is really worth it but you wouldn't be able to catch the bus as you would be between Kalaw and Inle Lake
