About
Fly a glider and caress the sky. Gliding - the ultimate high! The premier gliding club located in central Oxfordshire, we provide training for absolute beginners and experienced pilots. All instructors are fully qualified to BGA standards and rated instructors. We also provide introductory flights for those considering taking up gliding or just wishing to experience the joys and thrills of flight - something that makes a great birthday present. The instructors all fly for the pleasure of flight, are passionate about this fantastic sport and hope to enthuse others to take up gliding. The club flies every weekend and midweek for most of the year. In winter, midweek flying does occur but on fewer days, as the sport is weather dependent. We offer winch launches, aerotow launches behind a powered aircraft, and flights in a self launching motor glider. Midweek, we can also offer a video of your flight as an extra.

What a view!
Sep 2019
A red letter secret Santa (Thanks Katie). The experience exceeded my expectations thanks to Pilot Adam and the army of volunteers who contribute so much to the enjoyment. I had a near perfect day with clear blue skys and Adam managed to find an elusive thermal sending us back up to 2000 ft. I can't recommend this highly enough, an exhilarating experience, thanks to everyone concerned at Windrushers Gliding Club.

birthday soar
Mar 2019 • Solo
This was the soaring experience for the 70th birthday. Finding the gliding club was not difficult at all. The gates to the field open up automatically (they must have got ANPR system). The receptionist was very friendly. Everyone who works here is a volunteer, I understand. The club is situated on a large, disused airfield which goes back to the 1920s, to the early pioneering days of aviation. A person came up in a car very quickly and whisked me and my wife to the 'flying end' of the field. They had an old bus- body, converted in to a tea room. It was not very busy at 11.00 so I did not have to wait much. I had to do some back-ground safety reading as home work the previous night prior to the gliding, so on the day, there was not much learning to do.

It was one very fine (if windy) day between 2 very stormy days on either side. I was very lucky. The sky was absolutely crystal clear and blue. View below was amazing.

This was a winch-glider: a pilot sat behind me and would do all the gliding. A powerful winch machine was connected with a long rope to the glider and pulled it very fast. Within 4 or 5 seconds, we were airborne and had achieved an altitude of some 1000 ft. That was a very exhilarating experience. We then hovered over for 20 minutes, taking in the views below and orientating myself to the matchbox-towns below. It was wonderful. The pilot explained to me some technical aspects.

Then it was time to come down again, very steeply. the landing on the grassy surface was very smooth.

Then 5 minutes later, it was time to do the same thing all over again , the second time! ! What great fun. I had taken the camera with me (must keep it fastened around your neck) to take pictures.

The whole thing was such a delightful experience; the staff are very friendly and reassuring. I will happily do that again and encourage my wife to do the same too.

Glad you enjoyed it! Almost all of us started with a trial flight like yours, and got hooked on gliding immediately.

My wife bought me a trial as a birthday pressie.. what a great treat it was, we had a few aborted dates due to weather but when it was good boy the views were terrific. The instructor soon put me at easy, though its a tight fit & I thought claustrophobia would strike but no with so much perspex you can just see for miles and touch the ski.. I thoroughly enjoyed it and everyone was so welcoming..

Another one off my bucket list.

My kids bought me this opportunity for my birthday. Am slowly accumulating experiences from them!
It was great.
Had to travel a distance but it was very worthwhile. Very friendly staff who undertook pre flight proceedings professionally and calmly. The flight was a joy.
Having been towed off the ground "quiet" returned once we had separated from the plane. Though the visibility was limited we had great views. Was told to watch for the birds as we sought thermals. And we circled with them.
For a short period I had control of the glider and thoroughly enjoyed this aspect.
The landing was slick and smooth.
Am 73, but were I younger I'd be up there weekly. A tremendous experience and the Club made it a very memorable experience

Brilliant experience
Jun 2016 • Friends
I actually visited here in April 2016 but had a brilliant experience in the front seat of a glider.
The whole flight is recorded onto an SD card so you can then re-watch it back home from the safety of your computer!

Great experience
Sep 2016 • Couples
I bought a glider flight here for a surprise for my husbands 70th birthday through Red Letter Day.
We were greeted pleasantly and with a relaxed jokey feel to the event. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his experience despite a slight drizzle whilst he was up there. I, however got plenty of shots from the ground. We were transported to and from the launch site and there was shelter in an old bus with coffee, tea and biscuits available. Everyone was friendly and nice and he received a certificate. I'd like to do it myself one day. Everyone had seemed to have had a good time. All safety checks were done.

Worst Gliding "Club" I have ever visited
Sep 2016 • Couples
I think I have to begin with explaining that I have visited dozens of gliding clubs around the world, from here in the UK to as far afield as New Zealand and Chile over the past 42 years. They have been invariably friendly places where I have immediately felt at home amongst fellow pilots.
Windrushers started badly with me having to make a telephone call to gain entry. The phone was answered with "I suppose I can release the lock for you".
Parking outside the club my first three attempts at saying good morning to three different people were met with ignorant silence. On entering the office there was no pretence at pleasantries just business and "We are too busy". One pilot, a club member, trying to get a check-flight (an everyday occurrence) was asked if he had booked this previously and then told it was impossible without booking in advance. They didn't even know who he was! A "club" member for goodness sake!!
I cannot think of any other gliding club I have been to where i have not been greeted with a friendly "Hello, what do you fly? Fancy a cup of coffee?"
Windrushers seems to be a business more than a gliding club as I know them. They really need to learn a little politeness if nothing else.
