Have driven on state highway 1 past the turnoff to Matakana for many years and decided to go and stay for 2 nights.....so glad we did. Nice boutique shops, great little 4 square for those forgotten necessities.Cool public toilets.

Characteristic little town north of Auckland. Great coffee shops, boutique stores and bars and restaurants. Get there early to walk through the markets and then pick an outdoor restaurant for a delicious lunch in the warm sun.
