The weekend market has a nicely curated mix of farm and speciality merchandise. Great place to grab breakfast from the market stalls. It does get crowded, so expect to park outside the village and walk a short distance to the market.
Matakana has been developed really well and looks great - but it is an artificial town really, filled by Aucklanders having a small town experience, eating ice-cream and sipping coffee wandering around and wondering what to do, or spending up in the boutique shops. However,...More

Very tidy village. Super cute stores.
Visited the Deli and even though it was close to closing time, we were allowed in.
Walking around was do lovely and all the plants and gardens were perfectly kept.
Such a lovely day out.
You could easily drive through Matakana and miss this treat of a shopping area which has an excellent book shop, art gallery, chocolate shop, clothes and gift shops. Sophisticated NZ offerings along with a great deli, pharmacy and cinema on the main street.
We loved the atmosphere at the Farmers Market held on Saturdays in the Village.
Foodies will love it there's something for everyone and lots of unique and handmade/homemade wares and foods.
Parking is a nightmare however...I recommend you go early and wear comfortable shoes as...More
Visited on a Weekend when the Market was in full swing. Strolled around the small but modern shopping area adjacent to the Market area and had coffee in the Cafe right alongside.Altogether a most pleasant day and would thoroughly recommend.

No you wont be able to. I was in Matakana and Goat Island Christmas 2017. Even the larger grocer stores in Auckland are not open on Xmas Day so make sure you are well and truly stocked for both the 25th and 26th Dec.
If you are staying in NZ longer also keep this in mind for both the 1st and 2nd Jan.
Some petrol stations are open and MacDonalds was open in Warkworth.
Have a great time. Its truly a beautiful place. And Goat Island is packed on Christmas day in case your thinking of visiting. Get there early.
