Matakana Village is located approximately 1 hour north of Auckland. We were staying at Matakana Estate Lodge and visited the village numerous times. The village is tiny but houses some lovely boutique shops, restaurants and the local pub. On the weekends the farmers market is the happening place.

We were there during the week so didn't experience the markets which I am told are great. We did admire the permanent setup for them which we would love to have in our own town. Someone has put a lot of money and forethought in here. Loved the movie theatres, shops and cafes all in the same place.

We went to Matakana Village on New Years day after reading a lot of reviews. We were slightly disappointed in the number of "art and crafts" stores. A gallery, and a coupe of boutiques do not make for a lengthy visit, other than for a nice walk and pleasant choice of restaurants. If you do go make sure it is market day, plenty of people said it was a different place.

We stopped by for lunch after going to the Scultureum. Parking wasn't too bad but the markets weren't going on. We grabbed a few things from the Ringawera bakery and ate by the river in the market area.
The village also has a few shops and restaurants around. We stopped by honest chocolate to get something sweet as well as Ramas on the roadside to get some fresh fruit ice cream. It was a small village but had lots to see and eat. It is a nice place to stop by to relax for a bit.

Some beautiful boutique shops. Great time of year to come with the sales on. Nice eateries. Parking is not always the best. For bargin hunters there is also a great op shop.

We are on a long weekend from Taranaki with our two young children and thought it would be nice to visit a farmers market. Being from the UK we have spent many days visiting French markets and thought it would be nice to try and re create this experience for the children ..However .. The very first stall we went to , we were treated with the upmost snobbery that I have never seen in NZ.. Two old women who were selling salami . You would think that we were asking for gold dust by asking to sample their wares ..when my 9 year old daughter asked to try a piece, the nasty women scowled " no , she's already had some " .. Then had the audacity to turn to the other women and say in a loud voice " they won't buy anything .." I was totally flabbergasted !! Why go to all the trouble of making a stall , dressing up in what can only be described as hideous circus girls with their rose decorated hats , and then proceed to be cruel to an innocent child ? Life is obviously hard for these two sad women , when you can't afford to give away a piece of salami on a cocktail stick , in order to make a sale ? id advise you to give it up . By the way , if anyone wants to visit a farmers market , id suggest you seek out some real farmers .. Not someone pretending to be a farmer with an attitude of some stuck up old women with more money than sense and nothing better to do on a sat morning. The only decent thing about this place was the olive oil stand ( the lady was so lovely , and incidentally we spent $75 with her) and the fantastic band.. The rest ?? Total snobbery ..

Cute little village. You must stop if passing. Some nice shops and a few restaurants/cafes. Parking can be a bit hard to find, but then again just park a bit further away and have a nice stroll.

We come out on a Friday during the school holidays and it was packed. Some good shops to look around and a few eateries. I was told the Farmers Market in the weekend is very popular.

Went for Sunday lunch, menu extensive, staff efficient and great setting by the creek. We had salads & mince with toast & eggs.
