About
Southeast Asia is usually associated with a wet, tropical environment, but, in the area of Mui Ne, Vietnam, lays a beautiful desert. white sandunes is 50km away from mui ne central ,the city of Mui Ne is four hours from Ho Chi Minh City, in the south of the a further 45 minutes, and you arrive at Bau Trang, Bau Trang, or the White Sand Dunes, is one of the only desert areas in Southeast Asia and is a beautiful expanse of dunes and sand. There are no camels here; instead, shepherds herd cows through the sandy expanse. Perhaps the most striking part of the area is a small lagoon covered in lotus flowers. Beside the lake, there is also a small pine forest that makes the wind cool, even in the hot Asian desert.

We arranged a group tour from a Tour operator in Mui ne, we were told to be in the Hotel reception at 04:30, the driver turned up at 04:45 he forgot us, then he drove like Lewis Hamilton often driving on the wrong side of the road, we arrived around 05:30, we were told to pay k200 vnd each for a Quad bike up the dunes as it was a 4km hike, we were never told we would have to pay 400k when we booked, infact it's a 15 min walk, a right rip off, it was a disappointing sunrise as it was cloudy, not the tour operators fault. We went to the red sand dunes ( rubbish), again Vietnamnamese trying to sell you a sledge for 50k down the sand dunes, the Mui ne fishing village was very good but smelly, and finally the Fairy river, 15k to tourists not Vietnamese, all in all it was a rip off, the driver took every opportunity to try and sell us a quad ride, when we refused he dropped us at the side of the road and said 10 mins, and left, coming back for us later. Would I recommend it NO, would I go again NO. Arriving back at the hotel around 08:45.

The white sand dunes were part of a tour offer (besides red sand dunes and fairy stream) we booked at our hotel in mui ne. The actual place is pretty cool since you wouldn't expect to see dunes in Vietnam. The contrast between the white sand dunes and the dark blue water of the small lake lets you get some great pics, so it's surely worth a visit (if you're not in a hurry since it takes already more than half an hour to get there from mui ne).
What I'd definitely not suggest is renting a quad to visit the dunes, unless you're into getting ripped off! Unfortunately we fell for their ploy because I did such things in Egypt and Namibia which were really cool experiences, but in this place it was the complete opposite!!
They wouldn't let you drive on your own (they care to always provide you an annoying company of theirs), each ride just lasts 2min and you're being charged again to get to another dune as soon as you get off the quad. Those locals also don't bargain at all (which should've been suspicious already for Southeast Asia). We paid 600.000 VND for 2 people to get on one quad for 2min!
If you're there and have got some time, just do it on your own (it's for free and you don't need a guide) and enjoy the scenery! It will save you a lot of energy deeling with difficult people!

We went there on our way back to Ho chi Minh city from Da Lat on our tour van (20th Dec 2019).We rented 2 jeeps costing VND600K each.
We took lots of pictures and the scenery on top of the dune is beautiful if most of my eyes half-clised due to the glaring sun.It is advisable to wear a mouth cover&dark shades where the wind blew very hard and the sun is glaring if you visit in the afternoon (I learn my lesson when my mouth filled with bits of sand).
The most exhillarating moment was when the jeep-drivers took us on a sharp descent down the dunes where we screamed and laughed like crazy.Everyone was happy eventho exhausted, including our bedraggled looking tourguide (it's her 1st time, too🤣🤣)

Really enjoyed the ATV quad biking over the dunes. They were bigger than I expected.
I was disappointed that to ride the bigger quad the guide had to come with us on the quad. I was looking forward to going by myself or just me and my partner. However, we both had turns of driving and the guide had a turn & took us over some super steep sand dunes and offered to take our photo at some nice spots (all for a tip at the end of course).
The quad was more expensive than I had read online. It was 800,000 (35USD) for 2 pax on the big quad for 20 minutes.
We went around sunset and it was really beautiful.
Little bit awkward to find and took us 45 minutes to drive there but worth it for sure.

Mui Ne is just a 4-hour train ride away from Ho Chi Minh, about 200 Kilometers away, but it feels like you’re exploring altogether a different world. It makes it a famous weekend getaway from Ho Chi Minh City, with a busy streak of hotels, restaurants, and stores.
In the last 20 years, Mui Ne has witnessed some significant growth.

Got there for early sun rise. SCAM - locals waiting at the entrance to sell u tickets for expensive quad bike ride to top of sand dunes which they claim are 4km away. We declined and walked up which took us about 15 mins so unless you are not able to walk up it's a waste of money and seriously overpriced. As for the dunes one word comes to mind....average!. Scattered rubbish in places and the roar of quad bikes up and down just ruins it! If I could do it again I'd roll over in the bed and turn off the 4am alarm. There are far more spectacular dunes throughout the world.

Overall, it was worth the experience. We went and saw the sunrise & got a quad bike to get to the top of the dunes. Whilst the bike was expensive (300,000 dong) & the dunes were in walking distance, it was actually super fun. However, be warned, it was very touristy.

The White Sand Dunes are a curious bit of geography near Mui Ne. Look in one direction and you may as well be in the Sahara; look the other way and you see a deep blue lake with tall grass and lotus blossoms. It’s a nice bout of exercise to climb up and down the dunes, and you can romp around on an ATV if you’re into that. If you’re in Mui Ne, go to the White Dunes. They are significantly better than the Red Dunes.

It has been pretty astonishing to see such a big desert right beside a lake.
Ticket is 300,000 VND per person. And sand skiing costs 50,000 VND. On the top, it was very windy. So if you have kids under 3, you might not enjoy yourself very much

Had a great visit to the dunes and timed it just right for a 430pm start to avoid the heat and allow us to see the sunset. Next time prob not take our one year old but kids over 4 it is manageable. There is lots of activities at the dunes but one watch out is just keep an eye on all the 4x4s flying around. Had a ball and will be back!!!

Me and partner going to the dunes, however after reading reviews it seems you have to pay for another Jeep?? We can’t afford this, is there a way you can just walk it?

You can walk if you’re okay with walking up too high
Hi! We're thinking about renting a motorbike and go to both the dunes ourselves. However, we heard about the Mui Ne Police trap - police waiting for you on the roads and confiscating bikes from tourists or demanding large amounts of money.
Did anyone go by bike recently and what is your experience?

Bit of a random question but we are doing the usual tour including fairy stream and wondered what appropriate footwear is? I’m assuming we won’t hire a quad bike and walk the dunes. Any tips appreciated

Hi there! I had regular sports shoes and they got full of sand fast but that didn't bother me. Keep in mind that the sand is loose and it will end up everywhere no matter what you do. Some sunglasses might be a good idea to keep it out of your eyes. Ah, and don't put on any sticky sun lotion or you'll end up covered with sand. 😁
