It may be difficult to visit it because it is mostly closed to the public though one may eventually be able to visit it when there is either a mess or some sort of religious ceremony. One should pay particular attention to the tomb stones on its floor and the glazed tiles on its walls. These are the real witnesses of history.

Make sure you have a guide to explain the history. Nice old church. We only looked in because there was a wedding.

Just off Rua da Banana, this church was the first structure built in Cabo Verde by the slaves who were brought here, although typically not one they were allowed to use themselves. It's still in use today, but the lady with the key will open it up for you 'out of hours' so you can take a look inside. Keep an eye open for the Portuguese azulejo-style tiling.

Being a member of the Knights of Columbus it was an honor to be able to visit Our Lady of the Rosary Church, a church visited by Columbus before his third voyage to the New World.

We visited this during a half day trip to Ciudade velha. This is an important church visited by columbus and Vasco da Gama. Luckily someone came to open the door for us. Interesting gravestones inside. Well worth a visit.

At the end of lovely Rua Banana and then up to the left, can be found the church Nossa Senhora do Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary). From the point of view of art and history this is probably the main sight in Cidade Velha, the former 'Ribeira Grande'. When approaching the still active church a lady came towards us to ask, if he had tickets and so we showed her the all-in-all ticket we had bought for 500 Esc (5 €) each up at the Fortaleza Real de São Filipe.
There is some information given on boards at the entrance, also in English. The interior is modest in its decoration, there is a wooden gabled ceiling inside, the walls are white with on the lower part blue azulejos, and the wooden pews look quite new.
The most interesting sights are the old tombstones with well kept inscriptions and especially the side-chapel (to the left after the entrance) with a rib-vaulted cupola and a heavy font made out of one single marblestone (definitely imported).
It is not just the church as a building, which is interesting, but the whole history surrounding it. When it says though that this end of the 15th century construction has been the first Christian church south of the Sahara, one omits the fact the Christian Amharians had built churches in the highlands of Ethiopia way before.
What one tries though to imagine are the visits by Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus, coming to this church for prayers, before sailing on to remote lands, while Francis Drake had been more interested in getting hold of some souvenirs.

Stroll to the end of Banana Street and come upon a gorgeous flowering tree shading the entrance of this church from antiquity. This church is still packed on Sundays and is a must see when visiting the old city and Cape Verde in general.

There was a service in progress and we were only able to have a quick look inside. It is remarkable that this church is still functioning over 500 years after it was built. It had a typically simple and light décor on the interior.

Arrived here mid-day on a Saturday and we were quite disappointed to find it closed to visitors. Front door was locked. A historically-significant church, but not particularly attractive and not in a great state of preservation. Of course, being the oldest existing building in Ribeira Grande, you can't expect it to be in perfect condition. Easy to find by following Rua de Banana (Banana Street) from the town center. I'd give a higher rating if it were open.

This church was built in the late 1400s and is significant as the oldest colonial church in the world. It is a very small cathedral and we could only see the outside since the entrance was locked. The church is located in the "old city" of Praia just off of the "Banana Road". Worth a stop if only for the historical value, especially if you are wandering around the old city.
