It was a nice surprise and a very delightful experience.
The Casa del Nespolo is a small privately owned museum in the very center of Acitrezza run by volunteers. It is small, just two rooms and a nice garden, but it gives you a good idea how the people, especially the people living from fishing have lived and worked during the last century. It is filled with many of the tools the fishermen have used. The reason for the existence of the museum is the purported stay of the famous Italian writer Giovanni Verga is this house or a very similar one, as the tree in the garden, which gives this house its name (casa del nespolo) is mentioned in Verga´s novel "I Malavoglia". By the way this name (House of the medlar tree) is also the name under which this novel has been published in English. Part of the novel has also been put into well known a film by Visconti in 1948 (La terra trema) which he staffed mostly with local people from. Photos taken during the shooting of the film adorn the walls of this small museum.
The staff is extremely helpful and enthusiastic and tries to answer all your questions about what is known about the writers stay in this house, the shooting of the film, and the life of the people of in the last century.
I think it is a must for every visitor of Acitrezza interested at least a bit in the history of this place & people.

We went to see this MUSEUM today. It cost 3euros each and it was the best money we ever spent. Google the NOVEL and FILM before you go, if possible. It is an excellent ITALIAN MASTERPIECE.. There is lots of photos of local folk who participated in the FILM. We are going to watch the DRAMA unfold on FILM when we return home to IRELAND after the IRISH STORM. We feel that this MUSEUM needs more support from locals, BUSINESS, advertising, government grants and goodwill. We were told that it was closed. But, no a young gentleman opened it at 4pm. He was informative and kind.. Bring you camera......OFCOURSE .... There is great sea life and something special that the DIRECTOR saw in the local amateur actors / fishermen in Acitrezza. Near CATANIA. WE saluted the local Italian men playing cards on the steps to the entrance by sea on route to museo CASA DEL NESPOLO. Please support this fisherman/ film buff gem. It's a treasure in your town. Advertise, Advertise and market this MASTERPIECE. A special thanks to the young gentleman GUIDE on check in at MUSEUM.....He was very informative and caring. We hope he continues to open this special MUSEUM to the world. People can afford five euros to keep this MUSEUM OPEN........PLEASE HELP.

If you are passionate about literature and cinema you must visit this tiny but meaningful museum dedicated to the reality that inspired both Giovanni Verga's novel I Malavoglia and Luchino Visconti's film La terra trema set in Aci Trezza. This is a necessary stop to complete your visit to this mythical town, the museum is accessed through the staircase to the left of the main church facing the port. Make sure to call in advance to check hours and catch one of the guided tours (+390957116638). The guide was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. This museum deserves more support.

As a good fan of Verga I could not miss this museum.
You will find yourself at the Malavoglia house.
Outside two medlars, inside two rooms: one containing a collection of photographs of Luchino Visconti's cinematographic masterpiece "La terra trema" shot in Acitrezza in 1947, the other houses ancient objects from the world of fishermen, work tools and furnishings of daily life. The guys who will guide you on this tour are very prepared.

Thanks to the excellent and very kind Damiano we discovered anecdotes and curiosities of this small but interesting museum, which contains vestiges of the life of fishermen described in Malavoglia and prospects for the production of the film La terra trema by Luchino Visconti shot nearby.

Seen only from the outside, this is the house of Giovanni Verga's Malavoglia family located in the heart of Aci Trezza, a hamlet of Aci Castello. Verga set his novel in this seaside village, talking about a house in the medlar tree where the family lives protagonist of the story, a house that may have been inspired by the one that now houses the museum.

A very pleasant visit thanks to Martina, kind and knowledgeable, who guided us into the past of Aci Trezza, making us hear the song of the sea through the shell, revealing the secrets of the strong and ingenious fishermen. An unmissable stop that was worth the long journey that began in Val Camonica!!!

A wonderful journey into the past.
It is always very exciting to enter the Casa del Nespolo thinking of Giovanni Verga's novel "I Malavoglia".
The guide is a very knowledgeable girl.
He spoke with such engaging passion and such fluency of language that he left all of us attentively listening.
It is a stage not to be missed.

During my high school years I loved Verga and, in particular, I Malavoglia. Seeing the Casa del Nespolo, an old fishermen's house which represents one of the settings that inspired the great Sicilian writer, was a beautiful emotion for me. It houses a museum with testimonies of the "Sicily that was".
