We had seen the statue in Hilo which overlooks the bay, and it was impressive. But reading the story about this one in Kapaau, we had to see this one too. Also impressive, and the story makes it special since it's amazing that the statue...More

Having lived in Hawaii and attended school there....many years ago, the story of the King was always something special to me. Seeing this original statue was so meaningful. If you are at all interested in the Hawaiian history, this is the one statue you need...More

Nice stop on the back from Polulu point. Statue is interesting, tribute to local veterans on the porch was thought provoking and respectful. King's view cafe across the street was a good stop, too.

Great story of how the statue got back to this spot and a nice little break if you are traveling the Kohala area of the Big Island!

If you are driving somewhere and this statue is en route (e.g. Polulu Lookout) then go ahead and look for it. Not sure I would go out of my way to see it though.

The story of the statue lost at sea and the memory of the King it represents is very moving. Tucked into sleepy Kapaau at the North end of the Big Island it is a poignant reminder of the Native Hawaiians.

This statue is the original of King Kamehameha the Great, and before it came here it was lost at sea! How awesome is it that it was found and placed here!

In the period of time around King Kamehameha Day huge amounts of leis get placed around this statue's great neck, then maybe in that case it might be worthwhile to make a special trip to see, but otherwise, not so much.
