Mala Knezeva Kula (a.k.a. Small Governor’s Tower or Lombardo Tower) is located on the southwest side of Korcula old town, south of the passenger ferry dock and behind the massive Velika Kneževa Kula (Large Governor’s Tower). It is cylindrical in shape, and was built in 1449 by Governor Lombardo whose coat of arms appears on the west side of the tower (facing the harbor). The tall cylinder is built of local limestone, and crowned by a double set of spikes, giving it a distinctive appearance. Mala Knezeva Kula was built to protect the harbor and the Governor’s palace (behind it). Both the large and small towers are lit at night, which adds to the romantic medieval atmosphere of Korcula old town. There is no charge to view the tower or walk around its base.…
