If you happen to be passing by, glance at it. There is a pleasant market around it on a Saturday morning.

A bit of history about the area and a nod to America's independence. It's interesting to think about who built it and to add it to your list of obelisks seen.

There are a couple of structural elements such as four turtles holding it up and surrounding statues that can make a longer conversation and short history lesson (<5 minutes) with children.

Our six year old most enjoyed climbing on the cannons at the foot of the park.

Best done in conjunction with the Saturday market or parking in the lot around it.

Saw this whilst on the miniature train from Collioure. It was erected in 1783 to commemorate the independence of America.

This is about the only interesting sight in Port Vendres. After you have passed all the fish restaurants and bakeries on the waterfront at the very end you have something of interest to see. It is typical obelisk but the four panels at the base represent significant values and history of the French. What is interesting is the panel that depicts the French helping the Americans to win independence. They are more right than many people think, especially Americans. If it had not been for the French fleet showing up just in time at Yorktown to keep the British from escaping from Washington having them surrounded on the land, the Revolutionary War might have taken a different turn. The other panels depict the end of slavery, the right to liberty and the right to commerce. All great values given by the French to civilization. The view is very nice of the small harbor from here and is worth the short walk along the waterfront.

If you're in Port-Vendres, France go see this obelisk. However, don't go to Port-Vendres, France just to see it. The obelisk is located in a parking lot which says a lot.

The obelisk sits in the parking lot by the harbor where the market takes place on Saturdays. It’s a big spear into the sky but it’s a genuine monument to freedom and worth a short visit.

We took a 12 day Mediterranean cruise and Port-Vendres was the next to last stop. We didn't see much about the place online so we didn't expect much. It turns out that Port-Vendres is a very cute fishing village with a variety of restaurants and shops. What a little treasure. The obelisk was nice and they had a local market that was fantastic. We stopped at one of the restaurants for a glass of wine we were able to enjoy overlooking the boats. It was delightful.

We walked down into the town from our holiday apartment. This is an impressive monument. When viewed from the harbour direction it is above another of the towns impressive sights.

This is just an obelisk so I would only stop if passing by. There is little of interest to a traveller and time is better spent looking around the harbour and the natural views it over looks.

The obelisk represents 4 key areas, notably the liberation of slaves - some interesting history and a fine structure too, worth a little time to look around.
