My husband and I did a refresher course and boat dive with Divetech and had a wonderful experience. For some context, we’re a couple from Texas in our early forties, only about 15 dives on our log and we hadn’t dived since 2017.
Dan was our instructor for our refresher and he was fun, kind, and patient with us as we picked our skills back up. He tailored our course to what we needed to remember and took it nice and slowly with me since I needed to gather my confidence. They have a sea pool that is a nice middle ground between a swimming pool and the open water. I needed a little extra time to reacquaint myself with breathing underwater, and Dan ensured that I never felt rushed. He also helped us build on our skills with a few tips that we can carry with us as we build on our scuba journey, most especially with regards to weights and trim. Quickly after that, we were on track and out in the open water to enjoy a fun dive off the mini wall. Dan pointed out several creatures we would have missed including an octopus and a lettuce sea slug!
The next day, we were on the boat. They didn’t overpack the boat and it was a very comfortable ride. I really appreciate that there are plenty of women on staff. Jo drove the boat and guided our first dive, and Rachel guided our second. We felt like we were in very capable hands and they ran a tight ship with clear instruction. We’ve done boat dives elsewhere before and this was a much better experience in every way. The guides all have a lot of fun personality and show care that everyone has what they need to have a good time. However, if we were to do it again, we would hire a private guide so we could split away from the larger group and have someone point out things that are easy for us novices to miss.
We rented our equipment the next day and headed over to Macabuca for a last dive. The dive tanks are specific to dive sites, so we had to rent our tanks at Macabuca separately. Judging from the salty fellow working the desk at Sun Divers, we made the right choice in primarily using Divetech. But we’re glad we mixed it up by checking out a different site.
If we visit again, we won’t hesitate to book with Divetech again. We’d do the refresher again, and a boat dive or two with a private guide. Ask for Dan!
Note to Divetech: Consider some more signage at the entrance. It was a little confusing to know where to turn in.

I had a great time doing my rescue diver course with Serena! She made the course fun whilst maintaining an air of seriousness and professionalism that matched the content of the course itself. I also did a lionfish hunting dive with Ragi that I highly recommend. Ragi was an excellent instructor, and I was able to have some fun while simultaneously ridding the ecosystem of some nasty invasive fish. USS Kittiwake is also a must see; Jo will take you out on the DiveTech boat and you can swim through the entire hull of the 220 ft long submarine scavenger 70 ft under the sea. Overall fantastic experience, one that I recommend for anyone looking to dive Grand Cayman (which should be everyone).

Just finished 3 days of diving with DiveTech and I don’t often write reviews, but had to share how great this dive company is. They are organized, efficient, have excellent gear and a top-notch dive boat. The staff are so friendly and helpful without being intrusive. Their main location leaving from West Bay Dock meant world class dive sites, including the USS Kittywake are a 5 minute boat ride away. Highly recommend, from beginner to expert divers - they can handle it all. I hope to make it back someday…

I've traveled to Grand Cayman on many occasions and have heard good things about West Bay dive operation Divetech. Today, 1 November, is a stormy day and a group of us stopped by Divetech's facility to inquire about doing a shore dive when the weather clears.
The facility was not busy due to the weather and our experience with the staff was not positive. We asked about the mini wall, where the three buoys were attached and other general, non-proprietary questions. The responses from one of the staff were less than enlightening and we were repeatedly told when you sign up we will give you that information.
Well, I own a U.S. dive operation (which was not disclosed during our visit) and you lost any future business and referrals on my part due to the demeanor of the staff.

We had a super fun time diving on the reef right off the shop by ourselves but our group opted to do a lionfish culling course as well - would not recommend booking this experience with Divetech.
Our lionfish hunting course started out with some snarky comments from our dive instructor who wasnt wanting to teach this course that day and was complaining to her coworker she would rather be boat diving instead. Then there was more complaining because of an equipment switch that had to be done because one of the people in our group was replaced by a different diver.
Our lionfish hunting instructor was outspoken about being anti-hunting (not a good start), didnt know the difference between a Hawaiian sling and a polespear, and after a discussion about how the best place to find lionfish would be at a reef that was off the beaten path, not at Divetech, we jumped right in and swam out to the reef at Divetech - and there werent many lionfish.
We spent almost half of our oxygen swimming out at a depth of 15 to 20 feet to where we would start hunting. We did the same thing on the way back. This meant we only had about 6 minutes of actual dive time to drop down and hunt lionfish. This could have been easily avoided by swimming out on the surface and swimming back on the surface.
Just not a real smooth experience that could have been easily made better with a few modifications. But again, the reef was gorgeous and they rented functioning equipment

We were picked up from our resort in a broken down van with no AC and a broken door. Upon arrival I checked my equipment and got on board. No one did a safety check. You were completely solo and no one cared if you had a diving buddy. First dive down we were told to let the dive master know when we were at 1500 psi. Dive master never looked back or asked. I started losing air quickly at the ship wreck and showed my buddy I went down in air to 800 really quickly which was super concerning. She swam ahead quickly to let the instructor know. Shortly after I started my ascend about half way through the dive. After everyone was up I expressed my concern about a leak and was dismissed. Was told I was prob nervous and that I was prob breathing hard. I was not. Second dive- same thing happened. I think they were very unprofessional. I don’t need a baby sitter but for such a serious safety sport I felt they were absolutely not professional, nor did I feel safe/secure. Do not recommend.

Our kids (age 10 and 11) got their PADI certification with Raggy and we couldn't imagine a better teacher or setting for learning to dive. The Divetech crew was extremely professional and fun to train with. The pool for training is cut right out of the coral rock on the coast and has an egress leading straight out to the reef, it couldn't have been easier or more beautiful for learning to dive.

First trip to the Cayman’s, first real dive trip. Was looking for getting additional training and wanted a great place to dive. Friends had told me the Cayman’s were a great place for a rookie diver and they were right. Divetech’s divemasters are extremely skilled and, in my case, very patient. Sammi was my OWA instructor. I had heard that in some places, the instructors kind of just glossed over training and “called it in”. Not Sammi. He made me work for everything and I can’t thank him enough.
Divetech has their own seawater pool and directly on the shore, making shore access very easy. The walls are right there and you can get to whatever depth you want within 300 yards of shore.
Boat trips were beyond great. Jo and Raggy took me to the Kittiwake and several of the multitude of reefs in the area. The memories they created will leave a sh**-eating grin on my ugly mug for a very long time.
One of the key things that made it clear that I had made the right choice was the number of Divetech repeaters and dive trip operators that were on the boat. There is no dearth of dive operators on Grand Cayman. For people to come back and pros to choose Divetech is telling.
Divetech is not in the heart of Geogetown, but they picked me up in front of my hotel every day absolutely on time. Couldn’t have made it any simpler.
I’ll be back and I will definitely be diving with Divetech again (and hopefully again and again)

I had a wonderful time with Divetech doing my Deep Diver specialization class with Serena! Serena is an incredible instructor and made everything fun, comfortable, and safe. Thanks to the rest of the team (Courtney and Rachael) for helping put everything together as well. The diving itself was right off the shore via Divetech’s Oceanside pool which was a fun new experience. Definitely recommended!
PS - if you choose to eat at the adjacent restaurant Vivo, the cauliflower and impossible burger are ridiculous (in a good way).

The weather was great, the boat was clean, the ride to each dive location was short (5-10 minutes) and the underwater visibility was good. It was sad to see more coral bleaching than on our previous trip to the Caymans three years ago. We dove the Kittiwake again, and it was a completely different dive now that the ship tipped over. It was very encouraging to see new and bright coral growing on the ship! This was definitely a favorite dive, thanks Scott for guiding us through the Kittiwake.

Hi Jennifer,
Thank you for the review. Glad to hear you had a good time with us.
Sad to hear you got to witness more coral bleaching, it's not as bad as some other areas in the Caribbean.
But it is happening all over the world and Cayman government and DOE are trying their best to keep the reef healthy.

Do you regularly visit the Bloody Wall in the little Cayman Islands? Does anyone on the island go to Bloody Wall?
Menno V
Amsterdam, The Netherlands91 contributions
Hi Trailblazer3350,
I see the others have already answered your question, Bloody Bay Wall is located on the sister island of Little Cayman. It is too far for the Grand Cayman operators to dive, except for the Agressor liveabaord that dives all 3 Cayman islands on their week long itinerary.
Otherwise you would need to use a Cayman Airways domestic flight to get to Little Cayman and use a dive operator there. Please note that the no-fly restrictions apply as these flight usually cruise higher than a 1,000 ft altitude. So you would be looking at a 2 night trip at minimum, arrive day 1, dive day 2, leave day 3.
Or if you have some spare cash, you can use Cayman Helicopters for a day trip!

How many hours for kids to get certified?
Menno V
Amsterdam, The Netherlands91 contributions
Hi Jerry,
thanks for your question. You already got some great answers but happy to add some further information.
To get certified you'd be looking at the Open Water course. The minimum age for this would be 10 years old.
We'd recommend to use the PADI eLearning for the theoretical part of the course. You can do it in your own pace and saves you a day in the classroom while on holiday.
Following the completion of the eLearning you would need 2 full days to complete the course. Two mornings of skill practice in confined/pool conditions, and two afternoons with 4 open water (ocean dives).
We have trained many younger divers before and are looking forward to welcoming you to our beautiful island!
