Shaggy is awesome! You'll have more than a dive... you'll have a proper experience :) Shame he sucks at poker though (shame for him hehehe).

Shaggy's is World Class for instruction and all around fun!! The absolute best in teaching, guest service, personality, and flexibility. If you are reading this, do yourself a favour and get certified with Shaggy's or get on his boat for a day. I began my journey with Shaggy as an open water student and loved it so much I went on to do every course, right through my Dive master and specialties. I had tried before in Mexico and freaked out, never thinking I'd try again but ecstatic that I did, as it forever changed my life. I was taught personally by Shaggy despite considering other options to save some money and he was worth every cent! He was beyond patient and he gave an extended amount of time to teach my dive master and internship, making sure he missed nothing along the way. We did hundreds of emergency drills and navigational dives, boat driving lessons, rope tying lessons, camera and video lessons and so, so, so much more. He is an incredible teacher with a marine biology degree and immense passion for the ocean, for diving, and for sharing his gift with others. I have met many newer instructors and dive masters, and I am immensely proud to say that my knowledge and awareness went far beyond what they had learned with other companies.I owe this confidence and so much more to Shaggy.Thank you with all of my heart for sharing this gift with me, I will cherish it for all of my life.

We stayed in Shaggy’s condo and ended up doing a snorkel and stingray tour from his boat. He took us out after all the other boats were gone for the day, so there were only 4 of us in the water with the stingrays! It was such an incredible experience. We also did some snorkeling on the inner reef that was almost surreal. Shaggy and his captain Gary made it such a fun time, it felt like being out with friends. Our trip had to be cut short due to the earthquake, and Shaggy took us out a 2nd time free of charge. Such incredible, personalized service. I highly recommend Shaggy’s diving, and will return to Grand Cayman to dive with Shaggy in the future.

We spent the holiday week last month in Grand Cayman. I'm a very experienced diver and my 11 year old son has been begging to start scuba diving for several years. He did the coursework online and the pool work at home in NYC. I booked the referral dives with Shaggy who provided an amazing experience for my son who completed his skills and loved every minute of it. We started with 2 shore dives at Shaggy's reef which was a great way to start. Shaggy made my son incredibly comfortable and confident in the water and arranged the skills as a part of dives, rather than a separate experience. The reef dives were great and within minutes we had found turtles, lionfish, angelfish, barracuda and a mega-sized snapper. Shaggy made my son feel safe and secure and allowed him to do the skills needed without being nervous. The next day we did a full day private boat charter with Shaggy and his driver Gary with my non-diving family. Shaggy's boat was a perfect size for the four of us (and could have held a few more very comfortably) and was clean and comfortable. We started with Stingray City, Starfish Point and some reef snorkeling which was much more relaxed and fun without dealing with a crowded boat of other passengers. Shaggy and Gary knew when to get there to avoid the crowds and showed us how to feed the stingrays. The non-divers had a great morning too and it was nice to combiner the diving with a family day on the water. We had lunch and then did my son's 2 remaining checkout dives. The first was a reef dive that was lush with fish and stingrays. Shaggy did a great job of finding lots of the sealife and working on the skills for my son. As my son was doing so well, we made our last dive the Kittiwake wreck dive. Shaggy took us on a great tour around the boat and after careful assessment, decided my son was ready to do a little penetration into the easy access interior areas of the ship. My son was amazed to see what a wreck dive was like and Shaggy had already helped him fine tune his buoyancy control on the prior dives so he looked like a pro. All in all, Shaggy was confident, careful and just a great guy to hang out with for a few days. He gave both my sons (diving and non-diving) a great experience and we were sad to see the day end. His driver Gary was great with the kids and fun to hang out with as well. For the overall private diving concept, it was fantastic for my son's training to have someone just focus on him and not have to wait around in the group setting. We saw a group of divers sitting in a circle in the sand doing their skills on a dive and it reminded me how cumbersome dive training can be, quite unnecessarily. The cost difference for the training was pretty mild compared to the big operators on the island but it would have been worth a lot more for the improvement in his experience. For my own experience which consists of hundreds of big group dive boats, the private diving was a welcome relief from the sometimes annoying and lengthy waits for other divers onboard. I definitely didn't miss the usual 'rapid air suckers', 'mega dive experience boasters', 'flailing fin kickers' sometimes seen on the big boats. Unfortunately Shaggy has now spoiled me for future diving operations and will likely make me work hard to find small operators at other destinations in the future. We'll definitely go back to Grand Cayman (and assuredly dive with Shaggy) again. The water and sea life was fantastic and the island has a great mix of nice hotels, great restaurants and safe and friendly people.

I’ve been to many dive shops over the 8 years I’ve visited the island. Shaggy’s was the most fun I’ve had in a long while. It is definitely more personalized and intimate rather than the big shops that you sometimes feel like another number on the boat. I’ll be switching to dive with Shaggy and his crew from now on when I travel to the island hands down. I’ve been converted and I’m a big fan now. Also- do the DPV if you’ve never tried it, it’s incredible.
