Fantastic F1 Experience
Sep 2012
We found Motor Simulation Group through Groupon and went with friends to try the F1 simulator. We booked by telephone and the owner was extremely friendly and helpful in making the arrangements and gave us a choice of tracks to pick in advance. We decided on Silverstone. The unit where MSG are situated was a little tricky to find but we got there in the end, it was on a business park within an industrial estate. There was plenty of parking at the front of the unit which has a ground floor with an F1 car and some simulators and upstairs there are 4 more simulators and a bar area with drinks and snacks for sale. They are open from 10am to 10pm. When we arrived the owner spent time explaining how the experience would work and we were each allocated a simulator which had a bucket style driving seat, steering wheel with paddle gears, pedals, headphones and a large television screen. We also got to pick whether we wanted to drive a McLaren, Ferrari, Redbull etc The controls were explained and then we did 10 minutes of practice and the owner came round to help anyone who had any problems. We were then told how we had done and were given tips on how to improve. Then we had our qualifying session and at the end of this the order of the grid was shown and this was followed by a 14 lap race. The view you have is as if you are sitting in an F1 car and you feel all the bumps of the track through the steering wheel and through the headphones you get all the sounds and your 'race engineer' gives you track times. It is a really authentic experience. It was very engrossing and everyone got extremely competitive. Once you got used to the controls which were quite sensitive it became easier and you were able to go faster and corner more easily. At the end we each got a print out of the telemetry and it was interesting to see how fast you had driven and how hard the brakes had been used as well as lots of other data. We had a great time and the owner was very enthusiastic and helpful, he also explained his plans to expand the business and we wish him well with this venture. It is well worth a visit and we will go back. We were given some vouchers for a special price for a return visit within a 6 week period. My only tip would be if you do suffer from motion sickness it is worth taking a tablet before you go as it did affect two members of our group.
