About
A living Museum of boatbuilding. The museum is open every day during the summer. You can watch the craftsmen at work and hear about the boatbuilding and craftsmanship. Try your own skills in the Activity Route. You can attend exhibitions and films telling different parts of Norways maritime history. In the traditional ropemaker's workshop rope is made for boats from all over the country. Here you'll also find a nice exhibition on traditional ropemaking. There is a pleasant harbour-view cafe where we serve excellent coffee, tea and home made food. Hardanger Maritime Museum is a national centre of expertise which is committed to boat preservation, is an outdoor-pursuits centre, a craft training centre and a guardian of old craft traditions.

Excellent museum, and amazing value for money. Very interesting exhibits, great activities for kids including building your own paddle boat, and your entry fee includes half an hour out on the fjord in on the rowing boats built at the museum. Also great cafe with very good cake. Three hours happily spent. Highly recommended.

This boat restoration museum is particularly friendly and welcoming. We spent more than two and a half hours there without realizing it, between a rowing boat trip (included in the 30' ticket), a guided tour of the boat restoration workshop, and lunch on the terrace. , a guided tour of the farrier's workshop and the rope factory, then to finish some rope crafts. The museum also offers activities for children.
The team is keen to pass on local boat building know-how by training apprentices, leading seminars and welcoming individual visitors. Everything is very well thought out in this sense, in the American way. The museum is financially supported by the government and by private funds, it shows. Everything is perfect, the means are there to work well and welcome us. The staff is very involved, smiling and gives a lot of information, adapted to all audiences, of all ages and all levels of knowledge. Please note: map in French at the ticket office.
A real favorite !

It was very interesting to actually see boats being built and older boats being restored. There were a number of buildings with various projects. In addition because they use to make rope here, there was a display of how it was done. There is also a gallery with changing exhibitions. When we were there, it was old photographs.
Admission was 100NK.

The place is a small working shipyard, specialized in traditional wooden boats and building boats in the tradition of the vikings. You can see really how boats are built and all the crafts necessary to build a traditional ship incl a forge, an iron workshop and a ropeway. What is even greater: you can try a lot of these crafts yourself like make your own rope or learn how to put together planks in a boat.
As a real nice bonus you can lend a traditional rowing boat (included in the price) and try it yourself on the fjord.
Overall a great and very interactive experience!

We really stumbled upon this great museum. If you have a love for traditional wooden boat design you should find a way to visit. Demonstrations of collecting the wood, shaping and construction of beautiful wooden boats, restoration of historical wooden boats, and a gallery displaying Knud Knudsens photography makes this an absolute joy to visit!

We had a very rainy day and this was perfect for our kids. We spent at least 2 hours building our own toy wooden boats.(Our kids are ages 9 and 12) The workshop had very nice tools available. Our kids also enjoyed answering the question stations and other hands on activities. We went back on a second day and were able to take a row boat out as a family. They make row boats here and restore larger boats too. With the family pass to get in this includes a row boat for 30 minutes and you can rent one for longer.
The staff was helpful and really encouraging
There is also a nice cafe on site

This did not show up on Trip Advisor mobile apps. Well worth a visit as it is not just a museum but renovates older boats as well as producing a small number of rowing boats which can be hired as well as purchased.Plenty for kids to do. You can make your own rope in the rope makers loft.

So glad you found us, despite mobile app-troubles. And great to hear that you had a nice stay at our museum. Did you know that you can use the rowing boats for free when buying a ticket? You should come back, and give it a try ;) Best regards, Cecilie
