Had planned to stop here when driving from Roque Nublo to Puerto Mogan. Stopped at a viewpoint and the area seems completely dried up. We were running short of time so didn't take the side road to drive down to the lake

The lake is hidden in a valley, surrounded by the hills and forest. Near the parking spot are the toilet facilities with running watter. There are plenty of picnic spots with tables and benches, under the shadows of the trees. The grill areas are at your disposal if you plan to stay the whole day. The scenery is beautifull with the palette of colors ranging from the blues of the lake, greens and yellows of the grass and trees, with the brown hues of the dirt. You can enjoy your day meditating in the nature or taking a hike around the lake.

We were already in the hood, so decided to take a look at this lake. That was not a wrong decision. The area has picknick tables and bbq's, free to use. Which the locals do, as they bring their food and drinks with them. We liked it. Had a quick walk about.

Just over an hour drive from Puerto Rico there is this lovely picturesque area in the middle of the mountains called Las Ninas.
It is called a recreational area & is used to the full by the local Canarians that have BBQs & parties on bank holidays & weekends, so it goes without saying, STAY AWAY during these times. If you have a hire car or you are one of those young fit people that rides a bike then this place is a must to visit during the week. Beautiful views, good walks, fresh air & always quiet & peaceful (apart from the sound of the local goats & sheep with their bells/cans around their necks that make a bit of a clanking sound). Peace & solitude eh?? If you fancy fishing for carp you need a licence, however, in 3 years I've never been asked for one & if I was I'd just say that I'm a tourist & there would be no problem, it will be a park ranger not the police!!!
Catch & release only, if you are seen by anyone to keep your catch , they WILL report you & a hefty fine will follow if the catch you, even if you are going home the next day.
Should you be a little nervous of the very steep, narrow & curvy mountain roads this will not be for you, for all you others, enjoy this wonderful place & please keep it clean & tidy.

It's a long snaky drive to get here but you'll be treated to scenes of the island most fail to appreciate from their 24-hour beach confinement.

There are several routes you can take. Bear in mind, though, that although the locals know this reservoir as Presa de Las Niñas (presa: dam; niñas: girls), the name that appears in Google Maps is Embalse de la Cueva de las Niñas.

One of these routes is from Las Palmas, via GC-23, GC-15 and GC-600. Another is via GC-65 and yet another is via GC-200. Apparently, this latter offers the most beautiful views but I've yet to try it so I can't vouch for it.

I came here at the end of June and there hadn't been much rain for quite some time. The level of the lake was quite low and the surrounding areas was rather dry. It was much greener a little higher up, around Roque Nublo. Certainly, it's peaceful here, nothing to hear except for the birds and the occasional visitors.

Getting here by bus is complicated. The nearest stop is Ayacata, and from there, it's a long 10-km hike down to the camping grounds. Is it worth a visit? As I'd suggested, when it's been raining, I have no doubt that the scenes will be far more attractive otherwise, you may want to save your time and spend it walking around the greener areas farther up.

On our way to Roque Noblo and came across this place, fantastic place to just stop!
Look around and listen, listen to nothing, just pure silence and the views are nothing short of stunning. And now the best thing......the drive, I hate driving but this was one of the best things I've done, it was like a roller coaster, up, down, left, round, round, right, down , up. Brilliant, loved it, not for feint hearted mind, some of the drops are unreal.
Ok, back to Las Ninas, beautiful spot with a campsite (with facilities) and nothing else, lake, mountains, quiet. Beautiful. 👍

This is a beautiful spot for picnics and barbecues; good parking, toilets, seating and BBQs... I can imagine it must be teeming with visitors in the summer. Fortunately it was really quiet and peaceful when we visited (1st December). We enjoyed a lovely walk around the lake (reservoir) which was marred only by the disappointment that there seemed to be no way to get across or around the dam, so we had to retrace our steps. The path is a little hard to discern in places and there are some rocky areas so stout footwear is recommended.

The road from Mogan was spectacular but not for the fainthearted as it was narrow and very bendy. We enjoyed visiting the town of Mogan(as opposed to the Port which is also well worth a visit) where we saw some delightful mosaics of Canary costumes. The reservoir is a pretty spot, easy to park, have a picnic and enjoy a peasant walk around the water. Quite a contrast to the busy south coast. We then drove back to the coast via Pozo de las Nieves which was full of almond blossom and very pretty with good bars and restaurants. A good half day trip to see the amazing interior of Gran Canaria but avoid weekends as the roads are very busy.

Beautiful location to park up and unwind.
Went here on a Friday afternoon to walk off breakfast. The road from the north is easy to drive.
There is ample parking, toilets, BBQ and picnic benches made of stone and a large reservoir that's a short 10 minute walk across the lunar landscape.
You could easily waste a few hours here with a walk around the water but wear appropriate footwear as there isn't a path as such!
