This was fun! we were 3 people (me 25 yr) and guide and on a sunny day. tour is a bit cheaper when you ask the camp manager at pelorus bridge.
you get a pick up to the river entry. it is more or less a paddling tour with a pretty slow speed but very beautiful. with scenic stops and information! small rapids which are easy to take (even backwards with the boat and no boat experience at all!) should be nice for kids and the water is not so deep (mostly below 1 m) not much hobbit background but okay... DONT BUY PICTURES OR VIDEO FOOTAGE AT ALL. We were ask if we want to buy (wasted 40$ !) the data of our tour taken with a GoPro on a helmet (which is absolutely nonsense because every picture is not horizontal) and bad picture frame on all data! We were promised 300! pictures and when we looked at them later on from the 2 gb usb stick which we got (no mail or anything!!) and it were just 40 and only on 7 we are in the picture. some small videos but not really good or interesting eather. I would never ever recommend to buy any pictures or videos... really bad. but tour was quite nice and chilling around.

Ben was extremely helpful and fun to experience this trip with. He led us down the river and took some great photos of us during our experience. The weather was terrific, the water perfect, clear and clean. I highly encourage anyone to take this adventure. Great for all ages.

My husband and I were looking for a fun kayaking experience in New Zealand. This excursion was absolutely fantastic. The water was quick and exciting but also not too difficult. The views were fabulous. Ben was an awesome guide who knows the stories about the filming of the Hobbit but also about the wildlife in the area. His knowledge of the river was invaluable as well. I recommend this excursion for anyone who is looking for something different and fun.

This tour was great! Ben and Shane were so nice, and the tour was fun. It was the perfect length tour, perfect amount of challenge for us beginners, and beautiful scenery. We loved seeing the Hobbit filming sites too. The drive to the site was short, and we enjoyed the history of Havelock along the way. I highly recommend this tour.

What a beautiful way to spend the morning, kayaking down the Pelorus river. We stopped at the area where a scene from The Hobbit was filmed, our guide Lorrraine was very friendly and helped us. Even if you haven't watched the hobbit it is a lovely way to learn about it. we stopped and where able to jump in the the lovely clear water. It was warm and had lovely scenery even a small water fall. Definitely a great trip and nice and easy going if you don't know how to kayak.

Had a great guide, stopped often for photo opportunities and it was a leisurely adventure. Traveled with children in their late teens and they had a wonderful time. Views were great, no need have lots of experience in kayaking, we had novices. The kayak's themselves were comfortable and light weight.

Not the "the faster, the better" kind of kayaking (though there are some fun rapids) it is more about drinking in the scenery, watching native birds and -on a hot day - taking a swim in the river.
Another plus, the owner Shane provides a lot of information on things to do and see in Havelock. So don't think you're done with this town in just one day.

First time we included the Pelorus Eco Kayaking in one of our tour programmes and it proofed to be a great success. Lucky to have catched a nice day the ruver almost looked like fluid jade. Great equipment, competent, very friendly and funny guides and the perfect surroundings made the afternoon a real treat. I believe taking a tour with Pelorus Eco Kayaking is worth more than the dollars you pay for it. It's a don't miss.
And if you want to discover more secrets of Havelock just ask Shane, the owner of the company :-)
