About
The Pelorus Mail Boat has been operating for more than a century. As a sea postie for a day, you’ll cruise through the largest, quietest and most remote part of the Marlborough Sounds – Pelorus Sound/Te Hoiere and Kenepuru Sound, and experience what we reckon is the best job in the world. Between deliveries and pick-ups of mail, parcels and supplies, relax on our spacious catamaran and marvel at the stunning scenery of clear blue water in tranquil coves and bush-clad hillsides. Meet some of the residents who await the Pelorus Mail Boat on far-flung jetties, unspoilt beaches or who meet us on their boats. A highlight for many of our passengers is the variety of four-footed furry residents who accompany their owners when we arrive. Our friendly, fun local crew will provide informative and entertainment commentary about life in this isolated part of the Marlborough Sounds.

Forecast was for a mostly sunny, turned out to be mostly overcast and windy. Chose to sit outdoors on the upper deck which was a mistake because of the noise of the wind, could not make out too much of the onboard commentary due to the noise. Moved to indoors on the lower deck at halfway through the journey, it was warmer and the commentary was clear, unfortunately the windows were covered in overspray from the large waves which were hitting the boat, could not make anything out clearly or look for any wildlife which was said to be a possibility on the tour. Maybe on a calm sunny day it would have been better, but that’s the chance you take when you book ahead. The skipper was great at his job, pity about the wind noise and overspray, Rob.

We had a great time. A bit windy for which the captain apologised. It would appear that the farmer is considering giving up which would be a big loss to this trip.

Happy day on the Pelorus Mail Boat cruise, informative sightseeing with a lunch stop, along with mail, human and canine transport. Amazing how the people live, reliant on boats with little Rd transport in places . Each doggie 🐶 that comes to meet the boat gets a biscuit.

Bit of drizzle and a bit windy but comfortable inside. Very interesting and great commentary from Captain Ross. Every time I see a dead pine tree in the bush on a hill, I now know why. And also have a better insight into the mussel farms and how they work. Tea, coffee and hot water available on board and yes, they have normal toilets as well.
Was very interesting to see all the mail that goes out to the different bays, Co pilot Mark has it down pat.
Thoroughly enjoyed our trip and would highly recommend.

Although it was an overcast day we had a great day meeting the locals (dogs) at the peirs we stopped at. They wait for the postman's doggie biscuit. Such a great sight to see and the guys on the mailboat having a chat with the local residents.
We were able to see the local dolphins in the area along with a couple of sea lions on the rocks.
It says bring your own lunch but you can order your lunch before the cruise as they do stop for lunch at the lodge and it is ready when you arrive.
All in all it was a great day out and a must do if in the Havlock area

It was a wonderful experience delivering the mail to remote and beautiful locations . Scenery was spectacular and the crew were very personable. Learned a lot as we went.Nice to visit Havelock where my wife's grandparents once lived. House was still there. It was like going back in time especially when we had to put coins in an envelope to pay for parking. Wonderful

We were told to make sure we had warm clothes as it can get cold and take our own lunch and snacks so were fully prepared. We had a lovely sunny day so were able to be upstairs on deck all day. It was great being able to get off the boat for lunch. A full and detailed commentary of interest through out the day was provided and you could actually hear the commentary through the speaker system

Beautiful surroundings and nice areas where a few people live.

The boat tour it self is crowded with more then 50 people on board and you don't get to speak to local people at all (as the brochure mentioned).
The boat rushes from one pier to another where the mail was handed over at the pier, and the booat rushes off again.
