Great museum, with a wonderful collection spanning prehistory to the Second Bulgarian kingdom. Also some lovely stelae etc in the outside grounds. There is a good English-language guide book covering the main artefacts. Only 4 stars because it was very hot & the aircon wasn't working!

We really enjoyed our visit to the Archeological Museum. The exhibits through the ages were fascinating. My favourite area was the Roman room.
The museum was well laid out, clean and the toilets were good. No photography was allowed and it was explained to me that we were there to enjoy the moment and not there to think about photos..
5lv each entrance fee, a bargain well worth a visit.

This is a very interesting place to visit. It is 2 floors with every room of history.
This Museum lays on top of a hill.
With a beautiful garden.
Just loved this place.
The entrance fee was not much and the lady was very friendly.

This museum is not too big but decent. It takes you back 9000 years ago until this day. The collection especially with gold coins and artifacts is interesting but it feels like something is missing when you visit it.

A really well organised museum with lots of information (also in English), additional pictures.
Features an archeological exhibition and a numismatic part as well. Worth to visit.

Povdiv and the surrounding area have been continuously inhabited, beginning in the early Neolithic Age. A center also of the Thracians and their only ever state, the Odrysian Kingdom, it got its old name 'Philippopolis' from the Macedonian king Philippos, father of Alexander the Great. Together with Serdica (today's Sofia) it had also been the most important Roman town on today's Bulgarian soil.
Whoever wants to delve in these times should visit Plovdiv's excellent Archaeological Museum, a bit removed from the city center and not far from the river Maritsa. The museum, one of the first in Bulgaria, opened its actual premises in 2010 and now shows the exhibits according to modern museum principles.
Entrance fee is 5 BGN. Photography is not allowed. As usual the museum is closed on Mondays. One starts the visit in a chronological way, beginning with the Neolithic times (7th-3rd millenium BC) and continuing with the Thracian Culture (3rd-1st millenium BC). There are useful information boards in Bulgarian and English.
Some of the best items were missing, since they were borrowed to Norway for the exhibition at Bergen's City Museum: 'Legends in Gold. Thracian Treasures from Bulgaria' (Aug 2017 - Jan 2018). They had now been temporarily replaced here by real size photos.
Speaking of gold the famous beverage set from Panagyurishte - 8 rhytons (cups) and 1 phiale (dish) with a total weight of over 6kg - also has its home in this museum. It had been found by three brothers in 1949, who were honest enough to hand it over to the state. For this they are now honoured here with a black-and-white photograph of them next to the treasure.
Of a different breed were the armed robbers, who stole the very valuable Roman-Thracian helmeted mask, made of iron and silver, from this museum in April 1995. Thanks to the efforts of the Bulgarian Intelligence the artifact was recovered exactly 20 years later (having been by then in the hands of a collector in Switzerland). Once more restored it is again another special feature of this museum's collection.

Lots of treasure, could take a solid 2 hours to enjoy this museum properly. Great value for the entrance fee, all exhibits have English tags and the staff is very helpful. The museum has a fresh air, not the typical communist design. Overall, a great experience

A nice surprise for history lovers. Although small, this is a very rich and interesting museum. The artifacts are very well displayed and visiting this place a is truly enjoyable experience.

This museum is wonderful.
It only has a small percentage of its items on display and I doubt it took us much over an hour to see everything but everything is of a very high standard. I think that this collection is equal to some of the best museums in the world however the width or depth of the collection is nothing like you would find somewhere like the British Museum.
That said I can’t recommend visiting here enough.

I was expecting more from this museum having been to the one in Sofia. It would have been better if it was organized with more information in different languages
