- zuvBucharest, Romania27,166 contributionsImpressive! An impressive construction and, fortunately, quite well preserved to be able to get you an idea of the greatness of those times. It has 6000 seats. Free entry with the Jordan Pass. In the rooms at its base there are two small museums, The Folklore Museum and the Jordanian Museum of Popular Traditions.Visited March 2023Written March 21, 2023

A famous landmark in the Jordanian capital, it dates back to the Roman period when the city was known as Philadelphia.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 7, 2023
- Shubh KVienna, Virginia499 contributionsRoman ruins downtownJordan has some impressive Roman ruins, including some right within its largest city, Amman. I had a driver take me around the city and stopped here for about an hour. It's very steep and much higher than it seems from a distance. If you're going to Jordan, then chances are you're flying into/out of Amman - definitely make this visit while you're in the city.Visited December 2022Written June 4, 2023
- Athena Constantinou119 contributionsWorth a quick stop!Another famous sight in the heart of the Jordanian capital is the Roman amphitheatre! It was built in the 2nd century AD and is still used as a venue for cultural activities. There are also two museums on the site – the smaller Folklore Museum on the west side, which displays cultural artefacts from all over Jordan such as costumes, tools, household items and musical instruments, and the larger Jordanian Museum of Popular Traditions on the east side, which displays cultural artefacts of Jordanian and Palestinian origin such as costumes, mosaics, textiles, embroidery, jewellery, and household items that give a glimpse into the daily and domestic life of the people of Jordan in times past.Visited June 2023Written July 15, 2023
- Sea DwellerDubai, United Arab Emirates6,681 contributionsOne of the most famous monuments of the Roman period on EarthThe Amman Roman Theatre is one of the grandest and majestic structures that can be seen in Jordan, and indeed one of the most famous monuments of the Roman period on Earth. The Roman Theatre was built during the reign of Anthony Pius, and it was in 138-161. Just knowing its history, one can imagine how much human labor was needed to build such splendor. Like some other sights of Jordan, the Roman Theatre was carved right into the thickness of the rock, which was located near the huge ancient cemetery. Its architecture is such that the long benches face north, which allows you to watch what is happening on the stage at any time of the day without fear of being blinded by the rays of the sun. Especially for the noble people of that time, the Roman Theatre was connected by an underground tunnel, which is located very deep, with the Citadel, which provided sufficient protection and made it possible to arrive at any time to admire new spectacles. In front of it are the colonnades of the ancient Forum, which appeared a little later, as well as the Nymphaune fountain, built in honor of the water nymphs in 191. Remarkably, the Roman Theatre is now used for its intended purpose: high-profile sports, cultural and musical events from the life of Jordan are held here.Visited March 2023Written August 8, 2023
- niva b28 contributionsHistory in the heart of the cityNestled in heart of Amman, this ancient heritage is a must visit while in Amman. As i sat in the high stairs of amphitheatre, i could imagine the crowd of people gathered to watch performances. From top, you can get great view of Amman downtown. Don't forget to visit small theatre nearby as well. The sound amplifying system there blew my mind (You talk in one corner and it can be heard loud and clear in another corner). In the evening, the square outside this theatre is crowded with families and kids hanging out and playing.Visited May 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 3, 2023
- MohammedMuscat, Oman40 contributionsMust VisitI visited the citadel before and thus I thought visiting the Roman Amphitheater would be a waste of time since I already had panoramic views of the same theatre from above. I was wrong. You have to enter the place to appreciate it (btw seeing it up close from the downtown area isn't enough). It literally takes you back in time and makes you wonder about the masterminds that managed to construct this place no less than 2000 years ago.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 11, 2023
- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia14,153 contributionsTheater as it was in ancient timesThe Roman Theater dates from AD2. It was restored in 1957. The theater will hold an audience of up to 6,000 spectators. The theater is built into the side of a hill, it's quite spectacular. The theater is in regular use during warmer months. You can see how theatrical performances were made during ancient times.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 20, 2023
- JessabelllNew York City, New York147 contributionsAmazing site in the cityThere is a lot of life happening outside the theatre - kids playing soccer, friends meeting up, tourists. It’s was vibrant. The theatre itself is beautiful and VERY steep. We didn’t realize it until we climbed up and looked down. I had a slight panic that we weren’t going to get back down. It is not for the light of heart so think before you climb. The theatre is also right by the Citadel so I recommend doing them both in one day.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 16, 2023
- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,452 contributionsFirst saw it from my hotel windowI arrived late at the hotel and at check-in, the Receptionist told me to enjoy my views of this attraction. It was well lighted and looked intersting to visit. I used my Jordan pass to visit the attraction. At the entrance, there were several men smoking here even though there is a sign of “ No Smoking” posted near by. Noted more men smoking at the higher level of this amphitheater. Learned that it is still currently used for live performances. Took several pictures inside this attraction as well as outside where more ruined columns are on display.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten October 30, 2023

One of the highlights sites to see in Amman. The Amphitheater is located in low valley close to the ruins of ancient city of Philadelphia so it is very easy to visit and don’t need a lot of time. This place is rich in Roman era history.

Smack in the middle of a busy street this amphitheatre is magical. We arrived in the late afternoon/evening to capture nice shots. It's worth the evening 2 hours spent with friends for a chat at the top and watch Amman below you pass by. Definitely worth it.
Great view also. Bring a camera.

The amphitheater is centrally located in the old area of the city. While we were offerede to hire a guide, we visited it by itself and found the experience rewarding. Apart for the amphitheater itself, there are two small museums on each side (one focused on Jordan history and customs and one that includes some wonderful mosaics). Both museums are quite dated, bout still worth a quick visit.

This is the other thing to see in Amman (beside the citadel). I declined another expensive guide who pounced as soon as I walked up to buy a ticket and told me how much he likes GB. I couldn’t be arsed to ask if he’s ever been.
Challenge your fitness by climbing all the steps to the top row. Get vertigo and realise that these were definitely the cheap seats.
A couple of quaint museums on site with mannequins in traditional costumes and rather annoying people taking their photos alongside them.

Located in the heart of Downtown Amman, the theatre almost appears from nowhere.
It was free on the day I visited, although you usually need to purchase a ticket from the hut across the square from the theatre.
There a 2 very interesting museums near the entrance which are included in the entry fee.
The views from the top tier are stunning and the theatre itself is very well preserved- be warned, the steps through the tiers are rather precarious!

My hotel was opposite this attraction, and although pretty, I didn't think it looked that impressive. However, when you go and climb its vertiginous stairs, the feat of engineering really stands out. Watching families and friends socialise and play in the space adds a warmth that the January afternoon lacked.

Our hotel was across the road from this site. It’s in regular use, during the day, families hang out here and play ball games, a picnic type of area and at night there are younger people gathered here to hang out, too. When we were there, they had a motorbike show, there were stalls set up where you can buy kebab etc. We grabbed some food and sat for a break just to watch the locals. It’s not a must, but if you have time to do a quick break, do it here. And at night, there’s a guy that sells local dessert of deep friend dough - lots of people lining up for this, it’s good! It felt very safe even until late into the night.

Including in the Jordan Pass, this is an outstanding Theater, very well preserved and really easy walk down from the Citadel. Don't miss the Odeon (smaller more exclusive Theater next to this Theater) that could host 500 people. Feel free to walk around all the way to the top and soak it in.
Make sure not to miss the Museum of Popular Traditions and the Folklore which are on the sides at the bottom of the Amphitheater.

This theatre is very large, it's in the middle of Amman. This impressive theatre dates from Roman times. The theatre is a popular place to hang out, it's well-liked local by young people. If you have seen other Roman theatres, you are unlikely to be very surprised. However, it is in good condition and well worth exploring. If you don't have time to go in, you can get a good view of the theatre from the road outside.

Can you walk down from the Citadel to the Ampitheatre?
Jennifer F
Kansas City, MO648 contributions
Yes! There is an actual path down there. It's a LOT of stairs but easier than navigating the crazy streets.
If you go to Open Street Maps and zoom in on the Citadel, just past the parking, you'll see a dotted red line to the theater. Those are the stairs. Basically, you walk from the Citadel, through the parking lot and keep right. You'll walk down a street and then see a set of steps between buildings. You just keep going down and you'll see the theater at various points. Crossing the street is a challenge, so look for other people crossing and go with them!

We had a rental car when we visited. The entrance to the site is close to a major intersection and there is a bazaar at the entrance. I think you should have no problem finding a taxi.
