It depends on your interests. In a half day or so, you can clearly walk up to the top and through the abbey if you are active and in shape. You’ll also be able to stop to shop or have a meal. You could then be on your way... More
It depends on your interests. In a half day or so, you can clearly walk up to the top and through the abbey if you are active and in shape. You’ll also be able to stop to shop or have a meal. You could then be on your way. If on the other hand you want more on the history, architecture, current religious connection, and how they deal with the river and silt build up, you’ll want to consider a guide. In the end, how much time you spend is more determined by your level of interest. If you just want to “see” this historic and beautiful sight, you can do it without staying in the local area.
