- fairtrader397 contributionsLovely placeWell worth catching the bus from Bergen. A little disappointed by the road noise in the garden but the surroundings were beautiful. I was lucky to catch the first tour of the day with a charming guide who was happy to have plenty of time to answer questions and was so enthusiastic. Lovely experience all round , except the rather basic cafe.Visited May 2023Traveled soloWritten June 23, 2023
- jeg-reiserSarasota, Florida19 contributionsA lovely experience! The grounds and buildings are so well taken care of. You’ll find several places to visit: a tour of the home with its original belongings mostly in its original form, a concert if you arrive at the right time, a museum walk reading about artifacts displayed, Grieg’s small cabin where he composed, beautiful views and scenery, benches to sit and take in the sights, a small cafe, a small boutique, and quite friendly staff who are happy to be working there. A must visit!Visited June 2023Traveled with familyWritten June 29, 2023
- James W9 contributionsE.Gried and his musicIt was our dream to visit Troldhaugen. E.Grieg music is something very special, music that can open your internal feelings. The concert hall with its glass made wall at the rare side of the hall and perfect acustics gave us additional positive feelings. We enjoyed the concert.Visited June 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 3, 2023
- Trail77766718 contributionsA nice afternoon of music.A nice treat for lovers of classical music. We went for the afternoon performance and heard a lovely piano recital of several Grieg pieces followed by tea and snacks at the cafeteria. The museum is very difficult to find - more street signage would be helpful.Visited June 2023Written July 9, 2023
- Ralph WilhelmCarmel, Indiana783 contributionsExcellent Museum based around E. Grieg's music and life! What a wonderful and educational stop in Troldhaugen. The Edvard Grieg Museum and its numerous buildings and land are quite impressive. The guides that show you around the museum (the house that Grieg and his wife lived in) are very competent and patient, answering all questions. We were not allowed upstairs where the bedrooms are but the first floor's three rooms are roped off and the guide takes you around and explains life during Grieg's days. Further, the separate building with the performance stage and a singular piano allows for excellent music written by Grieg and played by very accomplished pianists. Lastly, you can see about 100 meters away, the small red building that Grieg used to compose his music...overlooking a wonderful lake and undeveloped land. If you are in Bergen, this is a must-see for you to make time for—one of a kind for sure. Enjoy!Visited July 2023Written July 21, 2023

Regardless for classical music buffs it is a must visit location. Access by tram was easy enough with a kilometre walk each way.Visited August 2023Written August 5, 2023
- Rudo MThe Netherlands2 contributionsVisit Edvard Grieg’s placeThe visit of the house where Edvard lived was so nice with the stories of the guide. Worthwhile! The recital was magnificent. Not just the music, but also the tales about the young Grieg, very lovely. And Ingunn Tennøe did a wonderful job. We love her!Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 14, 2023
- Barbara AWashington DC, District of Columbia120 contributionsA beautiful place with beautiful musicAs musicians, we were looking forward to this excursion and were not disappointed. The ticket included transport from Bergen by bus, the tour of the villa, and a noontime half hour concert of Grieg's music by a local pianist in the concert hall. The villa isn't big and one can only see about 4 rooms, plus a stroll outside to see his composition hut. The concert was delightful. We had a quick bite to eat in the cafe before the concert - nothing special but tasty and inexpensive. Our only complaint was that we would have liked about 20 minutes more...the tour bus guide (from the Kode museum, which sponsors this) had us back on the bus literally 15 minutes after the concert ended - about enough time to make a bathroom stop and walk to the parking lot. If you are getting to Troldhaugen on your own you won't be constrained by the time limit. Otherwise, a lovely half day excursion.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 16, 2023
- C PParadise Point, Australia52 contributionsHighly recommended for classical music enthusiastsThoroughly enjoyed my visit which included bus transfer from the city, visit to the museum, tour of Grieg's home and composing cottage on the waterfront. The highlight was a half hour lunchtime piano recital in a newly built hall with stunning views of the water. There is also a gift shop and cafe on site. If you or your children learned some Grieg piano pieces, Troldhaugen is well worth a visit. If you book through Kode, your ticket also includes free admission to all Kode museums in the city on the same day.Visited August 2023Traveled soloWritten August 20, 2023
- zeneszerzoBudapest, Hungary119 contributionsLovely placeThe exhibition is not very big, but interesting. The house itself works the same way. We didn't see the video recording and we didn't use the audio guide, but didn't miss it. Don't forget to find the grave and the hut! Lovely place, amazing view. The shop is also nice, you can buy music scores too which is a nice touch.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 23, 2023

We are a couple who love music and thought this would be a good way to spend a wet day. £30 each. We got on the coach and our guide pointed out 2 random things en route - including beehives on a rooftop. Nothing about Greig, his education, life and history just that he was very short and a statue was pointed out.
We were repeatedly told we had to be on time for the return trip. The coach would not wait.
We arrived and it was pouring. She said we would be divided in to two groups - those that would go indoors and the other 30 or so who would wait in the rain. Then followed confusion about tickets which I had on my phone but were handed out in paper form.
After standing outside Greigs house while the tour started for the first group, cold and wet, we filed in to his house. We were shown pictures, random decorations and his piano. After 20 minutes we were through the house still without any knowledge of where or when he was born, his journey to musical success or how he developed his famous and much loved compositions.
We then found his composing hut under our own steam and then made our way to the concert hall. It’s beautiful and we were very much looking forward to the piano recital.
We took seats but were told we had to wait outside incase the pianist wanted to warm up. Since when was that done in private?
We were allowed in 10 mins before the concert. He played well and we enjoyed the 30 minute recital.
Afterwards I queued for 20 minutes to use one of the 2 ladies toilets.
I then looked around the cafe and gift shop and ended up running to catch the coach back.
I found what I wanted to know on Wikipedia on the way home.
It’s a beautifully well kept, carefully curated house and site with much to commend it. The concert was lovely. The problem was our guide, who was charming but very inexperienced, didn’t tell us anything, and the organisation was really poor. I wish them well but it needs some attention to make it a decent tourist experience.

Great place to visit if you are a fan of Edvard.
The museum was great to see even if you have never heard of Edvard.
When listening to some of his music playing in the museum I realised that I actually had heard some it before, I just never knew his name

As a lifelong admirer of Grieg's music, making a pilgrimage to his home in Bergen has been on my to-do list for quite some time. Seeing his residence, his composing hut, his grave, touring the museum, and capping everything off with a live performance of his music by an accomplished pianist was a great experience. I highly recommend it for anyone else who enjoys Grieg's music. If you're in Bergen, consider it imperative to visit Troldhaugen.

This is a perfect excursion place. I stayed in Bergen only for a day (cruise) and decided to worship one of the great composers of romantic classical music.
I was not lucky enough to catch one of the regular free busses that leave from the tourist information office in the harbor, so I took a tram and walked for 15 minutes to find the place.
The museum is rather small and visted in half an hour,
but in combination with one of the regular concerts happening in the hall,
it is a great idea.
You can also stroll around the beautiful nature at the lake.

My grandmother was a soloist. She was singing in opera until the time of World War 2. In her repertoire which was suggested later for us her grandchildren there were songs music to which was composed by Edward Grieg. I bought ticket with the concert in Troldhaugen. Grieg music is perfect!

We are coming into Bergen on a cruise ship. We are only in town from 8 to about 4. What is the best way to get to Troldhaugen and get tickets for a noon concert. We would be there on Aug. 16 (Friday).

If the cruise ship has booked a private concert at Troldhaugen, the easiest way is to join that shore excusion. If you want to go on your own, there is a bus tour from the Tourist information in the city centre at 11.00. A guide from the museum will accompany you and give information in English about Grieg and the sights you pass. The bus goes directly to Troldhaugen where you will have a guided tour of Grieg's villa and some time on your own. The tour includes the lunchtime concert at 13.00 in our chamber music hall "Troldsalen". Duration of concert: ca. 30 minutes. The bus back to the city leaves at 14.00 and you are back in the city before 14.30. You can purchase tickets for the tour online at Visit Bergen's homepage

Hi I understand that going by public bus would involve a long walk which would be too much for my elderly mum, but is it realistic if we go by Cruise ship excursion? Would the coach drop you near the Troldhaugen museum and also near Fantoft Stave Church? Could mum sit somewhere in the museum just to listen to the concert without having to walk about too much or must you always be on the move? The Bergen cruise stop doesn't list any 'easy' excursions, so I'm trying to be realistic. thanks for any ideas.

If the cruise line has a shore excursion that includes Troldhaugen, their coach will park at the main parking lot. From there there is a 400 metres flat walk to the museum. Usually a shore excursion includes a concert in the concert hall, and the hall is accessible for people with walking difficulties. So is Grieg’s villa, although that involves walking up a few steps. If the rest of her group walks to the gravesite and the composer’s hut, she can enjoy a cup of tea in the museum cafeteria.
