The church is located on the island of Riddarholmen, close to the Royal Palace. It is the last resting place of the Swedish monarchs and aristocracy. The church was built in the late 1200s and it is one of the oldest buildings in Stockholm. There...More

The oldest building in Stockholm, started by the the grey monks as a monastery and then a "royal" church was built. Recommend a guided tour.

My wife and I recently visited the Riddarholm Church and found it to be very interesting. As others have noted, it is the historical resting place of former Swedish monarchs. From a historical perspective, therefore, it was a window into Sweden's past. It is a...More

On my wife's places to visit was Riddarholm Church which was not impressive on the outside. Nor the inside either until you start to see the burial vaults and crypts of Swedish Kings and Queens dating back 400 years. I was saddened to learn that...More

The Riddarholmen is an island near to Old Town and was in the 13th century dominated by a Franciscan monastery. And the the Riddarholmskyrkan was the abbey church. It's not the oldest church in Sweden, but the oldest in Stockholm. It is the burial church...More

This is the oldest church in Sweden, but yet it is also the most modest one. It is impressive to visit history in such a old place, seeing the many kings and princes laid here. But, at the same time, it is a rather stale...More

The church and the grounds are quite stunning. Across one bridge from old town but visible there from nearly everywhere. There is a massive courtyard there too which makes for some great photo ops also. Worth checking out from the exterior as well as from...More

We particularly liked this small, quieter island west of Gamla Stan. The church is beautiful and the history of the royal family burials interesting and the church is good to photograph, as are the other buildings around the square. If you buy a ticket for...More

I was impressed to see the beautiful coat of arms as a symbol of who are buried in this church. All the monarchs from 1632 to 1950 except only 1 queen Christina, are buried here. A small but well preserved historical site. Vicinity is charming....More

Gamla Stan & Riddarholmen
Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s historic old town and home
to the Swedish Royal Palace. It’s the most central
island of Stockholm and accompanied by the small
island of Riddarholmen, mainly known for its famous
Riddarholm Church. Gamla Stan tends to be a bit
touristy at times but is definitely worth visiting:
take a stroll past the well-preserved buildings and
through the small (and also Sweden’s narrowest)
