About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Climber7404670 contributionsOutstanding tour, unforgettable services, excellent experienceThe tour was just fabulous, our guide was super nice, informed and friendly, we had a an absolutely great experience. The store was a great shopping experience, we learnt a lot on this tour. Transportation arrangement, driver courtesy and punctuality were remarkable. The service was absolutely unforgettable. We purchased a lot of products in the store and when we were dropped off at our hotel, we forgot the bag in the vehicle. A few days later we realized this and I contacted them. The bag had been retrieved and handed off to customer service, they made arrangements to ship it to us and we got it within a week after we got home. Fantastic ethics and service, many thanks to the Don Juan team and Jeffrey.Written January 19, 2025
- Missnelson20090 contributionsNight walk and tourThe coffee and chocolate tour were so informative. Our guide Jorge (sp?) was amazing. So sweet and fielded numerous questions. It poured the whole time which made it more authentic! So some cool animals on the hike also!Written January 7, 2025
- Rickymark10 contributionsFun and educationalHighly recommend this tour because it gives you a fun way to learn about making chocolate and you get to make your own special version. Our guide on the night walk found sloths, frogs, and an eel and other critters.Written December 23, 2024
- 34keithn0 contributionsThere are much better tours available! The night tour was relatively non-descript. Mainly bugs, a sleeping butterfly and a tiny frog. A guide from another tour pointed an animal that our guide said was a porcupine but to me it looked more like an opossum. It was quite high up in the tree and actually it was amazing that the other tour guide spotted it. Then when our tour was just about finished a female sloth appeared in a low branch scratching herself. You couldn't miss her. We could practically hear the scratching. The Don Juan Gift Shop has nice stuff but way overpriced. I refused to buy anything. As an example, a waterproof map you can buy on Amazon for $12.95 was available in the Don Juan Gift Shop for $27. I recommend staying away from Don Juan.Written July 28, 2024
- Discover5519800 contributionsEnjoyable tour!Carlos our guide was very entertaining and knowledgeable. He did a great job. I give 5* for chocolate and coffee portion of the tour, which was very enjoyable. The night tour was a bit lacking, through no fault of the tour company. Didn’t see much, I was not impressed. I would recommend the chocolate and coffee tour, not necessarily wasting time or money on the night tour.Written July 28, 2024
- Lucy G0 contributionsJust do it!!My husband and I had such a great tour! Our guide was great and super knowledgeable. We ate as much chocolate as we could and drank so much coffee and hot chocolate. The night walk was especially special, seeing a tarantula, scorpion, fireflies, 2x sloths and heaps of bats. I would recommend this tour to anyone who comes. Great value for money!!!Written July 6, 2024
- B1592IWsarahc0 contributions3in1 tourWe couldn’t see much animals because of the rain but our guide made sure that we had a great time! Thank you Kathleen for your great sense of humour and your effort to turn the bad temperature into a great experience!Written June 25, 2024
- YODO880 contributionsExceeded Expectations !!!We booked this tour last minute while in Monteverde. It was great.. We had some teenagers with us and the tour was interactive, fun, and the night walk was super enjoyable for them as well as for adults , even after getting rained on. We went during wet season, so a raincoat is a good thing to carry. Just in case. The guide was super knowledgeable and dynamic. Great experience that exceeded our expectations. Recommend it.Written June 21, 2024

- Excursion619051433110 contributionsGirls TripOur group of six women thoroughly enjoyed our Coffee, Chocolate and Night Tour. Our guide, Rolo, was very knowledgeable and was willing to take the time to answer all of our questions. His love of the wildlife was evident on our tour of the forest at night! 5 thumbs up!Written February 12, 2024
- DianeSkies0 contributionsWonderful tour! While exploring Costa Rica with my sister and friends, we went on a few guided tours. This may have been my favorite! It was a multi-sensory experience. We experienced the texture and taste of the cocoa bean during the various stages of its processing, sampled coffee and chocolate, and finally saw a few animals while on our night hike. To top it off, the night sky was absolutely gorgeous! Our guide, Rolo, was very informative, comical, and kind. While walking out to the parking lot, Rolo made sure that we had a ride waiting for us. Thank you, Rolo! :)Written February 9, 2024

- cmeastman780 contributionsFun and informative! We booked this tour last minute and we are so glad we did! The tour was the perfect combination of educational and adventurous! Even the kids enjoyed learning more about how chocolate and coffee are harvested and processed. The night walk was super fun and we were lucky enough to see a porcupine, opossum, toucan, guan, frog, butterflies and giant insects. Many thanks to our incredible tour guide, Rusibel!Written December 18, 2023

If there is one activity that should not be missed in Monteverde, it is Don Juan's tour. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed. From the beginning to the end of the tour, we immersed ourselves in the history of coffee, chocolate, and sugar cane, passing through several places explaining to us step by step how we obtain coffee and chocolate from the fruit to 'to the final product. The sugar cane was pressed in front of us and we even tasted the delicious juice obtained. When booking the activity with an English-speaking guide, we barely noticed that we would like the tour to be in French. To our great surprise, we were assigned a French-speaking guide, Carlo, and oh my God how pleasant and friendly Carlo is. Several tastings are done throughout the tour. At the end, we stop by their shop to buy our own coffee, chocolate, sugar, and several souvenir items cheaper than in the city center. This place is exceptional in every way. I really really recommend it.

Firstly I had expected to see the coffee fields but we were simply shown a bush. Our tour started late in the day and whilst it would have made common sense to start the door outdoors and move indoors, our guide did the opposite which meant we we peering at a coffee bush with a torch.
The guide started by asking everyone’s name inferring that he would remember them, it was all a joke ( to him) as he simply called out a couple of made up names in Spanish at the end. And so the guide’s silliness continued throughout the tour. He asked the group questions throughout and persisted in questioning all group members even after the correct answer had been given. In the end someone told him just to get on with it.
With the right guide, the tour would have been interesting.

Came last minute because we rained out for a hike, and so happy we did - we came just in time to participate in a wonderful tour (normally at 10, but this day was at 11) with just enough time beforehand to enjoy some amazing hot chocolate and coffee in the gift shop por gratis. Our guide was funny and knowledgeable, and we had a very hands-on experience with the chocolate, sugar cane, and coffee portions of the tour. About 2 hours, for $40 US was great for us!
Will recommend this place to anyone looking to learn more about the local industry and how our favorite things are made.

Had such a great time on this tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and warm. It was such a cool experience learning the history and process that goes into coffee, chocolate and sugar cane farming/ production. The only comment I had was that there was construction workers on site horsing around and being loud during the tour, making it hard to hear our guide. I’m sure it wasn’t intentional but it was distracting for all of us. Overall, highly recommend this experience.

Tour far exceeded my expectations! Our guide managed to share tons of interesting information about the coffee, chocolate, and sugar making / harvesting processes while also keeping the entire group engaged for the entire 2 hours. The tour is very interactive, and you get to sample a lot of interesting products along the way. Highly recommend!

We did the 3-in-1 tour (chocolate, sugar cane and coffee). I'm surprised of the amount of very positive comments, as this does not reflect our experience. For $36 per person, this tour is not worth it. You should know that the only plantation that is actually produced on their land is coffee. The chocolate and sugar cane are simply there for the explanation to the visitors, as it is not the right climate and therefore not the right region. We feel that the installation is made for tourists only and their souvenir shop, which is a pity. Moreover, the guide explains the different processes without much enthusiasm and with very approximate information. He does not know how to answer basic questions on the subject. Maybe bad luck with the guide, but still...
If we have to mention a positive point: the visit of Don Juan himself who came to say hello. An 85 year old man full of energy!
In summary, skip the tour and go for a special tour like Hacienda Alsacia which was a great experience!

We took a really great tour with our two children through the world of cocoa, chocolate and cane sugar... and learned a lot in the process. Our guide made a lot of effort and it was a very special kind of culinary journey of discovery.
Unfortunately, the products in the souvenir shop (chocolate and nuts) are almost inedible or simply old and bland in taste. They had nothing in common with the delicious chocolate on the tour and were simply overpriced.

Fun, interactive, and informative! The tour takes about two hours and you are able to learn all about chocolate, coffee, and sugar cane, with plenty of samples throughout. Our guide Kaitlyn, was funny and delightful, and gave us a “private” tour for our family and we were all able to participate in making chocolate, coffee, and a sugar cane drink.
The tour facility is well done, obviously built for tourists, but worth doing. Recommend making a reservation through your hotel. Ours was able to get us spots on a tour that appeared sold out online.
After the tour, sample a variety of chocolates and all the coffee and hot chocolate you like. Highly recommend this tour.

Hola! We took a tour last week & had a fantastic experience! Our tour guide Abbigail was the best!! She was incredibly knowledgeable & patient with all our questions. Her respect for all animals & plants shined through the entire experience! Even after a scorpion stung her - she rescued its babies & turned it into an educational experience for the little ones. This experience was definitely a highlight on our trip to Costa Rica.
