Private Mt Ruapehu Summit Plateau Guided HIke

By Adrift Tongariro
About
Worthy of a place on anyone’s bucket list. The volcanic crater of Mt Ruapehu and its milky blue waters are an impressive sight, making this a hike to remember. The lake changes colour from an amazing deep green to pale blue to solid dark grey depending on the craters temperature. Run exclusively for you and your family or friends, private tours are more flexible and can accommodate different fitness levels and avoid weather-exposed sections. We guide all year, summer and winter, with snow up until the end of December. This is a fantastic snow experience using crampons and ice axes. Please note this is not a track and is less stable walking than on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

Mt. Ruapehu is the highest (2797m) of the three active andesitic volcanoes in the Tongariro National Park. The last eruption on Mt. Ruapehu was in 2007. Join us for lunch on top of the North Island highest volcano from where you can gaze down into the geothermal waters of the crater lake.

      Must-do experience
Had an amazing day. Stu, our guide, did a great job of looking after us. He ensured that we were as safe as possible and also gave us a lot of insight about the history and geography of the Tongariro national park.

      Feedback, it's a gift.
The guide we had (Chris) was very safety conscious regarding the walk and made sure everyone had the right equipment. So we got off to an assured start. We didn't complete the walk due to the weather conditions and turned back before the half way point. Ironically, despite being so risk adverse, he was looking at his mobile phone while driving the van back to the pick up point; a complete no no from a safety perspective. Not a big issue but, despite all the walkers engaging with Chris, he made no effort to talk a about anything else apart from himself and his experiences. An opportunity missed, particularly with the children who were there.

      A truly memorable day.
I had an amazing day with Adrift Tongariro on the Tongariro Crossing. Adrift thoroughly checked our preparation, ensuring everyone in the group had the correct clothing and footwear for what started as a cloudy, wet and very windy crossing. Our guide was superb - she judged the pace of our crossing perfectly, so that the group overall didn't struggle on the steeper sections. Around 11.30 the weather miraculously cleared, giving us fantastic views of Mt Ngauruhoe, the Red Crater, the emerald lakes and Lake Taupo . Thank you Adrift Tongariro for a fabulous highlight of my four weeks in New Zealand.

      Guided Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike
Chris and Corbin did an amazing job as. guides taking us on this challenging hike. Safety was a priority and they made sure that everyone was comfortable before moving to the next stage of the hike. They helped us navigate windy conditions on the way up and a steep scree as we descended. One of them always walked along with the slowest member of the group, so that no one was left behind.

      Friendly company great experience
Really lovely company and loved the guided hike through tongoriro alpine pass provided lots of breaks and additional information and kit. Only downscored because the “grandad pace” they stated it would be was definitely not that slow and meant some of the group turned back after 2 hours, which was a real shame. I think they could have continued at a more moderate walking pace. But overall we loved it and would book with this company again

      Tongariro Crossing 12th March
The Crossing, with Chris as our guide, was brilliant. Blessed by decent weather and a great group, it made up for the disappointment of not being able to go to Ruahape Summit. Transfers were good, food was fantastic, and Chris was a great guide. Someone said he knew every rock, and not only could he name them, he had an adventure to tell about every one of them. Truly good day walk. If Adrift aren't the best, I will be surprised.

Awesome guided tour a must do hike!
Our guide Stew was spectacular, caring and full of interesting knowledge of the area. We had a wonderful day hiking the crossing with 9 others in our group. We were the youngest in the group at 58 years old. It is a long hike but the pace is slow and doable. Only one section with a steep rocky descent was a little difficult but Stew helped us struggling. He was an awesome guide. The full day hike is well worth the effort because the scenery is unbelievable. Blue lake, red rock and the whole volcanic area will leave you speechless. A must do if visiting the north island in NZ..

      Competent and confident guides
I was really impressed with Adrift. Their website makes it really clear about the equipment that you need and they state on there that they check you have suitable clothes etc with you when you check in. They were thorough in checking that each person had appropriate clothing and footwear and water with them. They were also helpful in the days before the walk advising me to change my original day if I could due to the weather forecast when I contacted them. There were high winds on the day that I switched to and our guide made it clear that we may not be able to go ahead with the while walk until we had reached the deciding point and she was able to assess the conditions and how the group was coping with them. The visibility was poor in places and it was very windy on the higher part, so I was reassured at being part of a group led by people who knew the trail well. Fortunately the clouds cleared on the descent and we were all able to enjoy the views. I really recommend Adrift if you want to do the crossing as part of a guided group.

A challenging walk but amazing views around every corner
I actually only signed up for the half day as I wasn't sure if I was fit enough and I knew my husband wasn't. At the separation of the 2 experiences however I was able to choose to do the whole day experience while my husband went back. It was an incredibly beautiful walk with so many fantastic views. It was challenging but the guides were very encouraging and even gave out sweets! They were obviously very experienced and loved what they were doing which made it even better for us. I'm so glad to have done the whole thing. We were also lucky to have perfect weather - clear views and sun.

      Highly recommend
Can't praise our guide Stuart enough. I'm not the fastest but he was so supportive and encouraging me, when I had my moments of whether I could actually carry on with the walk he was there offering support and advice, never made me feel like I was holding everyone else back. His knowledge of the area is fantastic so you also learn lots during the hike. Thank you for a truly memorable day.

      Disappointing
We were on the Tongariro Crossing Tour with a large group run by Adrift. We are not experienced hikers but reasonably fit. Unfortunately the pace was set by the Adrift guide and this in my opinion was at a fast pace with hardly any breaks. There was no chance to enjoy the scenic views as you had to try to keep up. It was a very hot and sunny day which added to the difficulty. I participated as far as Soda Springs where I decided to give the rest of the tour a miss as the pace was excessive (in my opinion). I overheard one of the rangers, who had walked behind us, telling one of our guides that we had started at a very fast pace. With hindsight we should have carried out the hike on our own as you didn’t really need a guide. This would have enabled us to do the hike at our own pace and enjoy the views. As we were not allowed to break away from our tour group we had no alternative but to turn back to the start as we were told that the Devil’s staircase would be climbed without any breaks. We were told by one of the guides that the group had to reach a particular point within a certain time. It was very disappointing as this tour is expensive and we felt a bit deflated that we couldn’t continue at our own pace.

      Great way to access Tongariro
Guided hike with drop off at start and pick up at end of the 21 km track. The guides were helpful and encouraging. It felt like a safer way to do this hike as a solo traveller.

If you do think you don't need a guide please read the following: Solo alpine hiking is not recommended so I booked my trip with Adrift e few months in advance. This gave me enough the time to prepare myself for a full days hike/climb. Although I'm not foreign to long hikes and tough terrain but on this hike it was all different. Stu and Hiro were the guides for that day and had everything well prepared and organised. Everything went well up till moment I got confronted with an underlying issue that I wasn't aware off despite my fitness level it literally brought me to my knees. Stu made a good judgement and assessment of the situation. In a calm and professional manner the decision was made that I went down with Hiro. Stu kept in contact during this descent till the point he knew I made it safely back to the car. All I can say I can't thank these guys enough. They know what they are doing and will do everything to make sure you have a safe and enjoyable experience. I can highly recommend Adrift
