Highlights
  • Hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, known as New Zealand’s best day trek
  • Take in panoramic views plus lava flows, an active crater, and alpine lakes
  • Walk with a pro guide who knows the route, conditions, and environment
  • Learn about the region's ecology and Lord of the Rings filming locations
What to Expect
Make your own way to join your guide at the designated meeting spot, where your guide provides a safety briefing and equipment needed for the day. Start your trek in Tongariro National Park—New Zealand’s oldest—on an easy track that follows Mangatepopo Stream up the valley. The trail gets steeper as you climb up to South Crater, ascending 425 feet (200 meters). Continue to Red Crater, Blue Lake, and Ketetahi Hut, taking in lovely views over Oturere Valley, the Kaimanawa range, Rangipo Desert, and Emerald Lakes.  A short climb to North Crater affords additional views before you zigzag over alpine vegetation, Mangatetipua Stream, open grassy areas, and native forest. Your 7-hour hike ends with refreshments at the Ketetahi parking lot. This hike ranges from easy to moderately challenging, and is ideal for active people with a good level of fitness.

We did the walk with Rachel, Nick and Stacey. They did a great job of keeping the group together. Nick and Stacey guided us well through the Devil’s staircase and its only because of them that we were able to finish the walk. They were really patient with slow walkers and never

We were looking forward to the crossing and were not disappointed by the care and informed support we had from Dan. With 80km gusts at the ridge at the top by Shelter Rock there was a sensible discussion on the plan as to whether we were safe to continue and by taking care we

I did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trek with Dan and Felix as our group's guides. Let me first say that my experience overall with Adrift was amazing! The weather wasn't great, and we were right on the edge of having to turn around due to the wind at the high point of the pass.
