Start your trek in Tongariro National Park—New Zealand’s oldest—on an easy track that follows Mangatepopo Stream up the valley. The trail gets steeper as you climb up to South Crater, ascending 425 feet (200 meters). A short climb to North Crater affords additional views before you zigzag over alpine vegetation, Mangatetipua Stream, open grassy areas, and native forest. Your hike ends with refreshments at the Ketetahi parking lot. This hike ranges from easy to moderately challenging, and is ideal for active people with a good level of fitness.

What a brilliant outfit!
Feb 2020 • Couples
Attempt by my wife and I to make the crossing in extremely hot conditions. When my wife had turn back, the organisation care and attention was brilliant. The guides kept in touch as she was helped down so we knew she was safe. I continued up and reached the high point at Red Crater after great encouragement and support from the guides. Loads of fabulous views. Note well that at this point there is still two thirds to go, with many steps and tricky sections. This 69 year old was able to complete the course after loads of support and being nursed over the last few kms by the guide. I might have been last man down in the group, but it meant so much to us for me to follow in our late daughter's footsteps. I will be eternally grateful to Adrift staff for making this possible. Best wishes to them all

Great day, despite weather conditions
My husband and I joined a group of 6 others to complete the Tongariro crossing. From start to finish we were incredibly well looked after. Stu advised us on the possibility of changing weather conditions and the need to have suitable clothing for all occasions. Our guides, Simon and Dan, were terrific. They were ultimately there to ensure our safety, but they were also informative, friendly and entertaining!

The hike is for people with a very good level of fitness. There is an opportunity 5kms in to return to the carpark, but don’t waste your time and money by using this safety net! Simon and Dan were very clear and supportive with people whose fitness wasn’t sufficient, after all those participants had chosen to do this walk. 2 people did return to the carpark and as a result of Simon’s planning and liaison with the Adrift office, they were collected and awaited the rest of the group’s return.

Unfortunately weather conditions prevented us from finishing the hike. The wind was incredibly strong towards the highest point of the walk. Although I felt it was inevitable that we would be returning to our start point, Simon and Dan took the decision very carefully and didn’t rush to the decision. They continually checked the conditions, spoke to other hikers who had gone further than we had done but who had decided not to continue and they used their previous experience of weather conditions. They clearly explained their safety recommendation to turn around and checked that we all understood and agreed. They immediately offered alternative options to ensure we continued to have an active and fun afternoon and again liaised with the office to arrange our timely pick up (which BTW arrived with cookies, beer and soft drinks!)

Their alternative afternoon activity was great - a trip to a local waterfall.

Despite our disappointment that we didn’t complete the crossing, we still had a terrific day, chatting with Stu, Simon and Dan and our fellow walkers.

Amazing experience
Feb 2019
We did the walk with Rachel, Nick and Stacey. They did a great job of keeping the group together. Nick and Stacey guided us well through the Devil’s staircase and its only because of them that we were able to finish the walk. They were really patient with slow walkers and never hurried. They gave adequate stops. The lunch supplied was good.

Amazing day hike through Tongariro Alpine trail with an experienced and knowledgeable guide and a well-organized support system. Our guide, Felix, was sensitive to the individual needs of each hiker and provided support to get me through a few rough spots at the top where it was extremely windy and had soft slippery scree. Felix provided lots of interesting information along the way about the trail and was great company. One of our group decided not to continue with the trek a few hours in and after an encouraging conversation with Felix on the decision, arrangements were made on the spot for a pick-up at the trailhead. It was handled very well and professionally. Again, a great experience with our guide and the trekking company.

Challenging Day But Good Guide
Nov 2019
We were in the area for several activities and scheduled both a canoe tour and the crossing with Adrift. The canoe tour was cancelled due to a ton of rain and storms that day but the hike went ahead.
The Conservation Service had a "not recommended" sign on the trail head for the crossing based on the low clouds and high winds (30-50 km/hr at the top). The guides got the latest weather report and indicated we could go so we geared up with the proper gear and headed out.
The first half of the tour we could not see much of anything due to the low clouds and we had freezing rain as well. It was a challenging hike up based on the weather and when we reached the top we almost turned back due to the high winds but there were gaps in the wind gusts so we pushed on and made it over. Once over the top it was clear and we had nice views of the lakes and the mountains but the first part and crossing the peak ridge were certainly not for the faint of heart.
Our guide made sure on several occasions that everyone was ok with proceeding and we did lose one hiker due to struggling with all the steps but Adrift had two guides and one guide took the lady back who decided to turn back. After the peak it was all down hill from there (and I mean all down hill). Total trip is about 13 miles or 20km and it is a challenging hike in any weather but on a bad weather day it can be very challenging. We would never have done the hike on our own so we are glad we had a guide and the gear we needed from Adrift. We are glad we got to do the crossing but disappointed the first four hours were in the clouds and we could not see anything but that's weather for you. We could not extend our stay so this was our only shot.
Here is some general advice for the crossing. Try to give yourself a couple of days in the area so if the weather is poor you can try for another day as crossing in low clouds or high wind/rain is not great as you miss out on so many views. If the weather is very good you can certainly do this on your own but make sure you have all of the correct gear as weather can change quickly. If in doubt, use a guide or don't go if the weather looks dicey. Wear water proof boots, water proof outwear if rains looks like it might happen and dress in layers so you can add and subtract layers as needed. 1.5 L of water per hikers is suggested and then a good pack to put food, water and your gear layers as needed. The above is all in reference to a spring or summer crossing as I am sure winter is a whole different ball game. We went in November and there was still snow to go through but crampons were not needed. It was rainy, cold and windy so the layers came in handy. I just needed a bigger pack to hold everything as I was not planning on taking off multiple layers but needed to on the way up and the way down. The hike down can be as challenging as the hike up as pounding your knees and feet for 6 miles can be tough on the body and my feet and knees felt it for a few days afterwards as did my wife.
Overall it was a tough hike and felt like an accomplishment based on the weather conditions and the distance but we are glad we did it and had no issues with Adrift during out experience. We saw some of the other reviews and I am sure it is a mixed bag of weather conditions and maybe some communication issues that caused some of these. Hopefully we have no issues getting our refund as we paid for the more expensive canoe trip (which was cancelled due to rain) and then went on the guided crossing (we were supposed to do this on our own initially) once we saw the potential weather conditions. Feel free to message me through Trip Advisor with any questions!

A great day trek led by Dan
We were looking forward to the crossing and were not disappointed by the care and informed support we had from Dan. With 80km gusts at the ridge at the top by Shelter Rock there was a sensible discussion on the plan as to whether we were safe to continue and by taking care we could.
The weather although a little cloudy at the start was close to perfect by the time we stopped for lunch.
Dan was well informed and took great care to keep the group at a pace that was suitable for all. Lunch was enjoyable and appropriate with a wrap, a few fruit jellies, biscuits, fruit etc. It is a tough walk and you need to ensure you have appropriate clothing (Adrift will make sure you are suitably dressed and provide if required) Our group size of 8 was perfect. Enjoyable and tiring day as expected. Well done Dan and Adrift and thank you for a great day on the trek.
