We went on this trip during a visit to Costa Rica for a destination wedding. The trip was outstanding. The guide was great and the bus driver safely handled roads at night with a bus that I wouldn't attempt in a car in daylight. The rain forest hike was great and the boat ride was a nice relaxing interlude. The restaurants that we visited for lunch and dinner were really good.

Bus, driver, guide: great. Restaurants: food was excellent for both lunch and the buffet for dinner. Boat ride, rainforest/hanging bridge (they were accommodating for my walking issues, they had a scooter but it broke down so we just did a 1 loop and 1 bridge(I was OK with that): great saw many birds, monkeys. Spring: nice place but artificial pools were not hot- they say they pump the water from the hot spring into the pool, but the pools were warmish and all the same temperature.

OH MY GOODNESS!

So happy we did this tour. It was fun, excited, adventurous and educational.

The driver and tour guide (Dennis and Victor) were absolutely phenomenal.

I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

Juan Carlos was amazing at getting us there and was so friendly. Dennis was very knowledgeable and pleasant stopped when he knew the animals we were wishing to see were out. It was a great experience and when I go back I will personally request Juan Carlos and Dennis.

Swiss travel really let us down. Please read this review before booking as we would not like what happened to us to happen to anyone else on their vacations!

Our travel consultant, Jose Hernan Chaves lied to us while booking our trip. He said the volcano trip would have us back to our hotel at 8pm. While departing at 730 am, 8 pm was a long day, however we agreed. We ended up getting back to the hotel at 1030 pm at night. Other passangers were told 8pm and some told 930 pm. regardless, we spent 7 hours on a bus tour and got back to the hotel 2 and a half hours late.

the "volcano tour" is simply a 25-30 min boat cruise on arenal lake, which gives you glimps of the volanco. the national park has been closed for many years and you cannot even get close to the volanco. The rainforest walk was nice, however it rained, and we were not instructed by Jose to bring a rainjacket, only a sweater incase the bus gets cold. the bridges are scary and only have a 15 person limit, however our guide kept leading us on them while there was still another group at the end! Completely unsafe, not even to mention 150 feet in the air! The "natural hot springs" were hot tubs lined with man made rocks and water pumped into it by a pump. they charged us 75 dollars for 6 drinks, while everyone else was charged 2 for $10! when i went to pay on my credit card, i heard the bar tenders talking in spanish to charge me $85 dollars instead of $75, thinking I didnt understand spanish! When i caught it and called them out, they said they meant the number on my locker key. But the number on my locker key was 10! It left a terrible taste in my mouth.

We spoke to our tour guide, Allen, about this matter, who smiled and laughed at us. Said "it happens" to tourists, and we can "make a complaint". no understanding, no sympathy, just a sly smile and condensing comment.

there was NO view of the volcano during dinner. I looked out all 4 glass windows and saw nothing. no one pointed the volcano out to us or even told us where we were. dinner was a buffet style, same food as resort.

The worst part was, traveling home in the bus, Allen pointed out other tourists outside with bathingsuits and headlamps traveling to the "free part of the natural hot springs". So youre telling me theres a free part, and you can get there yourself!? Why didnt they take us there? oh right because its not located next to a bar that can rip you off :)

All in all, it left a terrible taste in our mouths. we felt used and vulnerable. When you come from far away and book these tours, you put your trust in these people. that they wont scam you and take advantage of you. they work for tips right?

I have been many places from here to hong kong, and this is my first ever complaint. We tried to complain directly to swiss travel the next day, but funny enough the phones werent working! so i wanted to leave this here to share with other couples and families traveling so you do not ruin your vacation!. Do not book with swiss travel. You pay a lot of money and expect to be taken care of and enjoy yourselves, please take my advice! a 7 hour bus trip to see the glimps of the volcano was just not worth it.

If you can, please book this tour privately as you will get more bang for your buck. We left from Secrets Papagayo at 7am, back at 10pm. The tour takes you to a couple of lookouts which are nice, and then for the boat tour. Boat tour is boring compared to the one in Nicaragua, water is very murky and we saw only one animal for 20 seconds-ish, no monkeys or anything on the shore, otherwise you get to the see a volcano from 4-5 miles away only (if you are lucky and there are no clouds which is rare). You don't even go close to it. The next stop is the rainforest walk, where you are rushed through quite a hike because of the group size. The last stop is a 'hot spring' which is actually a man-made series of hot tubs (only heated naturally, I guess) and not even in the rainforest. The pictures of the hot springs are downright misleading as you don't get to go to wherever that pic was taken. Tour guide was nice etc, but we found out later for not much more (Amstar / Swiss Tours are known for being overpriced apparently) we could have done this privately. With the private tour, you actually get to visit a real hot spring and aren't rush through the rainforest walk. Anyone who liked this tour must be a very inexperienced traveller as the tour was a watered-down, inauthentic tour that felt geared towards small children rather than adults looking to experience the country. It was very safe, but super boring if you are over the age of 10.

Our trip began very early in the morning at 7:40 am. When we arrived at the Swiss Travel headquarters we waited for the other travelers. Once we headed out our first stop was lunch. A nice filling lunch then we headed to a boat ride on the lake where our guide gave us a history. We then took a short ride to the Rainforest. The rainforest was a nice hike. Then we proceeded to the hot springs for an hour. A bathing suit and a spare change of clothes is needed. Finally, we ended our day at a resort for dinner. WARNING... the ride is roughly about 3 hours each way and very curvy. Our guide Eduardo was very nice and informative, great tour for people who don't suffer from car sickness.

We left from Hotel RIU Palace at 7:40 and got back after 10pm so be ready for a long day. Our guide Rodrigo made the day. He was well informed of Costa Rican history and discussed this constantly along the way as we observed various points of interest. The scenery is incredible along the way and our lunch was excellent! But his real expertise came out during our rain forest walk. I am a retired biologist and the depth of knowledge Rodrigo had of the rainforest was impressive. He had a natural teaching instinct and was able to explain things along with an easy-going manner so everybody could understand. The canopy walks were excellent and not once was there any concern about safety. If you don't like heights don't look down - but you will be missing out on some great stuff. Hots springs were fine - nice and relaxing - but a bit touristy. Finished the day with an excellent dinner at Arenal Kioro - a top shelf resort with excellent views and nice people. Reading some other reviews: Be realistic folks - you are in a RAINFOREST! It might rain, be cloudy, sunny and maybe all three the same day. Enjoy natural beauty of Costa Rica to its fullest! Sleep on the way back - you're on vacation you can handle it! Thank you Rodrigo and Roy (excellent driver)! We'll be back.

The tour was a beautiful but very long tour. We left at 8AM and got back at 10:30PM. The tour guide, Ivan, was fun and informative. The bus driver , Raphael did an amazing job handling the big bus through the hills and curves.
The lunch and dinner were both held at beautiful locations but the taste of the food was subpar.
There were gorgeous views of the volcano and the lake. The rainforest was a lot of fun learning about all the animals.
The hot springs was relaxing but man-made. I guess I was expecting something in the mountains.
We got a lot of great photos and were glad we chose that excursion.

We were pleasantly surprised how nice this tour was to Arenal. It started out rocky because my daughter gets car sick and only seats were in back of bus by the time they switched us over at the transportation hub. It felt a bit like Disney World for a moment. Then we waited an hour or more in a construction zone which was blocked. Our guide Sebastian was very helpful and kind. He had to have been frazzled by the situation but really shined on the walk through the hanging bridges. He found all sorts of cool animals and pointed them out, bats, sloth, coati, some really exotic snake- which with a complete phobia I was actually fine! He even gave up his seat so my daughter could sit in front on the way back and not be nauseous. The dining locations were both great. Surprisingly even with the traffic delay they never compromised visits on the itinerary. The driver, Alex, was amazing. He was very safe and I have no idea how he parked that bus, just a all around great experience.
