As far as I’m concerned, this is the best way to see Frenchman’s Bay, and get a longer view of Cadillac. Pick yourself a nice sunny morning, and you’ll be amazed. - Cosmopolitan7397210 contributionsSunset CruiseCrew was great. I had never been on a sail boat, so was really interested in all the activity to raise and lower the sails. Next time I want a more informative cruise. Did not realize it was more party than cruise. Wished I could have more info on what I was seeing but wasn't sure I could have heard it. I think the crew and I are the only ones who knew we stopped and watched the sunset!Written August 30, 2024

- JoneseyJ0 contributionsSchooner Sunset Sail-Margaret Todd Bar HarborSuch a great experience on the sunset cruise. Beverages for all ages for sale and some people brought their own charcuterie boards along. Captain and crew were great. Engaging and friendly. They even had volunteers help raise the sails. While we didn't have much wind, the captain still got us out around the islands and the views were amazing. Caught an incredible sunset too. Would definitely recommend this.Written August 5, 2024
- 273jacquelinej0 contributionsA must do!Wonderful experience! We left from Winter Harbor and went to Bar Harbor and back. Linda and her husband (the Captain) were great. Linda kept us informed on different sites and history along the way, and even brought our attention to some dolphins that we happened upon. This is a great trip for children. Linda is great with the kids, teaching them about the lobster traps (they even have a mini one on the ship) and how they bait the traps and band the claws. Just an overall wonderful experience that I would highly recommend. Plus, you don’t have to try to find a parking place in Bar Harbor which is just an added perk.Written July 19, 2024
- U1523UJlisac0 contributionsNice boat, but.....The staff and the views on the sunset cruise we booked were very nice. However, we expected that we would be "sailing" once the sails were up but instead we were kept close to the Harbor area where we boarded and moved at snail pace. It was basically a go out, view the sunset and come back. We also felt the boat was overcrowded as there wasn't much room to move around, long lines to get to the bar for a drink and then felt bad for obstructing the views of people sitting directly next to the line for the bar. Even thought the boat can hold many people, it'd be nice if there were 25-30 less to give a bit of wiggle room. Beautiful boat but just not what we expected.Written June 24, 2024

- AustinnBoston0 contributionsFoggy tourEasy process to book tickets online and download to Apple Wallet. Took a chance on day as it was last week of season. Boarded easily for 10am departure. Unfortunately the Harbor was completely covered in fog. The winds were 0.04 knots and water was pretty still. The crew did get volunteers to raise the sails and our first mate took time to teach us about the boat as we could only observe the fog and a few close dolphins. But still we met a few nice couples and by the time we returned to the pier around Noon the fog finally cleared. We did have a fun time and the only reason I gave a four is the Captain of the boat seemed like he had already gone home for the season.Written October 27, 2023

- carolwhitfield80450 contributionsMargaret Todd cancelledI was smitten the first time I laid eyes on the Margaret Todd, sitting in the harbor, hugged by the fog with her sails stretched toward the sky. Our sunset cruise was rescheduled to a morning cruise due to an expected tropical storm, bummed yea but still excited. We arrived 9am, there she was sitting pretty waiting on our adventure ahead. Then..we was notified, for her safety, they had to move her to a safe place because she couldn’t weather the storm. So we boarded the Joshua, half the size, same crew and itinerary. Thought I’d be disappointed but turns out, I was still in the beautiful harbor surrounded by mountains and sea with the love of my life and everything was just perfect. We saw seals, porpoises and a bald eagle. The staff was very informative and kind. I did expect to sail further into open water but overall it was a great experience.Written October 18, 2023

Not at all what they say...just an overcrowded ride on a barge. Advertised as a sunset sail - no sailing involved...motored out just a little way into the water (dock still visible) and bobbed around while they sold over priced cocktails and kept guests sitting. No history of the boat, bar harbor, or the area. One crew member even ridiculed the "Lame Sunset" as we held onto the one positive point in the excursion. Only positive was meeting some interesting people who were as equally disappointed. Don't waste your time or money. Not a water experience worthy of Bar Harbor, to say the least.

We are so sorry you see our cruise as a waste of time; many of our passengers would vehemently disagree. The Margaret Todd is a 151' schooner with more than a foot of elbow room for each passenger but when it's at full capacity, the ride can be a bit cozy. As you said, no sailing will be involved if there is no wind - we certainly have no control over that. We do not sell cocktails, but our beverage service does include beer and wine. Also, we typically do not provide much, if any at all, narration on our sunset cruise so as not to overpower our musician. Guests are instructed to sit so as to not interfere with the Captain's navigation or "rock the boat." We are dismayed to hear the comment from our crew member and have informed management about it to issue a correction. Again, we are sorry you were disappointed but to say it's a waste of time and money is your opinion, greatly outnumbered by numerous satisfied customers.

Expensive for what you get. Very crowded. You have to sit quite awhile for everyone to board, then go over instructions & safety and to raise the sails. Then they begin selling drinks. My husband waited in line for a drink for a good 25 min! All they do is sail right in the bay and you Head back as the sun is setting. Very boring and crew not up beat & fun. We thought this would be the highlight of our trip and it Was not. For what they charge they could Atleast give you a drink. Also my 14 yr son was not feeling well and he Went to ask for a water before we left port and they Said no not until the sails are up. He ended up getting off the ship before we left to avoid throwing up and the Person sitting very close to him. They didn’t offer a refund or even a partial refund. We did not ask for one since we acknowledge it was not their fault he didn’t feel well. However I do feel they could have given him a water to help make him feel better. It was very hot & sunny that day and wasn't Sure if he was getting overheated or seasick. In my opinion save your money and walk Across the sandbar and watch The sunset for free from there or from any other place.

We are sorry that you encountered unpleasantries on your trip. The drink line is very popular and can tend to be long. Our trips are advertised as remaining in Frenchman Bay and we return before dark as a safety measure. We especially apologize for your sick son not getting access to water right when he needed it but again, it's a safety issue. We appreciate you taking the time to submit a review and will strive for improvement.

We were anticipating a unique and fun experience, but I was really surprised at how poorly this sailing was executed. Minimal effort from the captain to make this enjoyable for guests with only a little narration at the beginning. The ship is unique and clean, but after a few minutes, the rest of the sailing is boring. We literally sailed out a bit, sailed back toward the dock, then sailed out and back again on the exact same route. We did not sail near any coastline at all. At best, this should be a one hour sailing and half the price instead of sailing the same path twice in a row. I work in the travel industry and would never recommend this to anyone unfortunately.

We are so sorry to hear about your disappointment. However, some points you raised should be addressed. Our captain keeps narration at a minimum so as not to disturb the passengers' serenity and peacefulness. But he does remain available for answering any questions and points out geological formations and wildlife when spotted. Regarding the route the ship took, the captain catches the wind wherever it's available, which sometimes necessitates the pattern you describe. We are saddened that you won't recommend this trip to others, but hope you find something else that meets your standards.

A relaxing, informative and enjoyable sail around the Bay, on this beautiful ship. We had a 10:00 AM tour and returned to the dock at precisely noon after having seen beautiful Bar Harbor and surrounding Acadia National Park from a completely different angle. The Captain was knowledgeable and provided clear and helpful narrative to the trip, while the Crew was professional yet approachable with questions. We lucked out with sunny weather and good visibility. Children were welcome on board but the Captain set explicit expectations that they could not walk around unaccompanied. Well done, Captain and crew!
(Additional tip: We were staying outside of Bar Harbor and decided to get to town early to enjoy breakfast. This made parking a WHOLE lot easier! )

Very disappointed - Paid $80 per person for a 2 hour trip. 6pm booking, Left the dock at 6:15, arrived back at the dock off boarding by 7:20pm. Bar closed after 45 minutes. Live music was one guitarist moving seats singing periodically with no speakers, quiet solos only a few surrounding guests could hear. Nothing like the event description. Staff also consistently left their hands out implying tips from us. Would not recommend and not worth the price.

Wow, you got quite the deal at that price; our normal fee for the sunset cruise is $52 per person, from seniors to infants. Upon consulting with the Captain, he informs us that boarding was finished before 5:45, followed by the safety talk ending before 6:00. Since the crew actively participate in departures and arrivals, it is necessary to close the bar with enough time remaining to help navigate the ship into port but beverage service does remain open for an hour during the trip. The musician provides acoustic music, which by its nature is not broadcasted over the speakers, thus contributing to our relaxed and peaceful experience. And our sails last an hour and a half this time of year, and judging from the tips, customers were happy with the experience. Our website description is "Our Sunset Sail is our most popular cruise – both romantic & fun! We often have live folk music: guitar, fiddle or banjo!", so we are not sure how your experience doesn't measure up. We understand you would not recommend this trip from your perception and that it is not a value, but so many of our passengers feel otherwise. We apologize you did not enjoy your sail.

Finally, after a half dozen trips to Bar Harbor, we booked this sailing trip for a family of 6 (costing over $500). While I realize, no one can foresee the weather, many onboard felt something different could be done. There was little wind and very hot. We sailed to a spot (it happened to be right in front of our hotel on the bay). We sat there for over an hour, our actual "sail" lasted 15 min. to this spot. It was hot and we had to wait until sails were up before we could get drinks. I had my credit card as I had previously asked if drinks could be purchased with this. We finally were able to get drinks, but were told they forgot the cash box and credit card scanner. I had a $5 bill. I could get 2 waters for the 6 of us. The sun was blazing, we sat there a few 100 yards off the coast from our hotel, dying of thirst and heat...no sailing, just sitting. Finally, when time was up we sailed back to the dock. For $500+ we sat in one spot for the entire duration, and saw the same view we had from the hotel patio, hot, thirsty. With high expectations to cruise around the bay, between islands and enjoy the views, this was highly disappointing. (we saw other sail boats cruising about). It was a lot of money to sit and sweat, knowing if we stayed at our hotel we would have had the same constant view and at least waters to drink.

This was a terrible experience. It was extremely overbooked and crowded. I did not get to sit with my family. There was an awful musician who roamed the boat and then tried to sell CDs. The “captain” was also very rude to me when I noticed how crowded the boat was and asked if we could exchange our tickets for a less crowded excursion. Overall this was a HUGE waste of money.

We are so sorry you were disappointed in your cruise. The capacity of the 151' Margaret Todd is 150 passengers, but we apologize if that did not give you enough elbow room. When passengers arrive on time, they get the opportunity to sit with their group - latecomers must be placed in position to balance the boat. Regarding exchanging tickets for a less crowded excursion, unfortunately, this request is impossible to honor since every seat on our sunset cruise has a passenger clamoring to take it. We hope you give us another chance in the future and regret you did not enjoy your cruise.

It was a smooth sail with moderate wind, coolish temps but comfortable with a wind breaker. Fascinating to watch the crew trim the sails. Crew were very informative and willing to answer questions. Disappointed we didn’t see much sea life-1 harbor deal and 1 dolphin. It was very quiet on the bay except for the sound of the wind and there occasional flapping of the sails. I would definitely recommend a sail on the four masted schooner Margaret Todd!

Thank you for your recommendation! It sounds like you had an idyllic tour. How lucky you were to see any sea life at all; as the temperatures become cooler, they become shyer. So glad you enjoyed your temporary immersion in the sea life! We hope you join us again on a future sail.

We went out on the Margaret Todd on June 14. It began to storm within 10 minutes of departure. Obviously, this company can't control the weather, but it is standard for them to cancel and issue refunds because of inclement weather. They really should have done that. We saw the possibility of rain, but knew that if we didn't go, we wouldn't get a refund since the trip hadn't been cancelled by them, so we, like the others, took a chance. It was pretty miserable, but it was made worse by how they handled it. They could have issued, say, a free drink, or a partial refund. Speaking of drinks: the credit card system for the bar was not operating properly, which made drinks cash only, which also meant a lot of very wet, very cold people who didn't bring cash because they didn't think they'd need it who couldn't even have the small pleasure of a drink onboard. We were among the lucky ones, managing to scrape together $12 for a can of wine. To cap off the whole trip: we returned almost 45 minutes before schedule. Sure, most everyone was ready to get off the ship, but still, we paid for two hours and got an 1 hour and 15 minutes. No refund, full or partial. No apology. Not impressed.

We are so sorry for the delay. Thank you, we appreciate your honest review. Unfortunately, like you said, we cannot control the coastal Maine weather but our weather policy does state that we will sail in a variety of conditions including light rain. Unless we are experiencing dangerous weather conditions such as heavy rain and fog or thunderstorms, we usually will not cancel if there are no safety concerns. We do apologize about the beverage service being so inconvenient. The rain did mess with our card system and we were forced to switch to cash only. We would have gladly rebooked you to the 10am sail the next morning as long as we had seats available. We are very sorry that you were not happy with our sail and that it was not what you had expected. We hope you will try our business again on a much nicer day!

A wonderful experience on the Margaret Todd sunset cruise. My son helped raise the sail. The crew were great. We enjoyed meeting some of the other passengers, got some beautiful pictures, saw some porpoises and enjoyed live guitar music. We did not have much wind, but the ship has a motor so it wasn’t a problem.

So glad you enjoyed yourself and that our crew did another fabulous job. That's great that you saw porpoises, they don't always make an appearance! We're happy to hear that despite the lack of wind, you still had a great time. Thanks again for taking the time to submit your review and we hope you join us again.
