Some English explanations exist, so that foreigner can also enjoy. If you are sort of freak on something scientific this is the place you should visit. Scientifically coal and fossil are almost the same, so they display both (strange mixture in usual sense). Built on the entrance of the old coal mines which were closed 50 yeas ago. Many fossils are shown with a special emphasis of Futabasaurus Suzukii which was discovered by a high school student.

Nice place to visit quickly, if in the area. Pretty good amount of fossils and sorts and you can get a little glimps into the japanese coal mining.

I have never been to a fossil museum before so the big dinosaur sceletons were really impressive. Iwaki seems to be really proud of that Suzuki dinosaur which got discovered around there. The best part was the long display series about the coal miners life from the Meiji period until the latest time.

Wouldn't let me in on a seniors evidence despite sign so had to pay full entrance fee. Very good display of fossils and dynosaurs. Excellent coal mine display showing underground workings.

My son and I traveled to Yumoto on 8th July to visit the Fossil Museum and Spa Resort Hawaiians. The fossil museum is a 15 minute walk from the station, across the overhead bridge and turn left (north). There are few sidewalks so be careful, as cars will be passing you really closely. The museum was well laid out, and we were able to get an english pamphlet which was really useful. The dinosaur exhibit was amazing. My son particularly enjoyed the elevator down to the coal mine exhibit...the lights go out, and the feeling is that of travelling hundreds of meters underground, with all the related sound effects. The miner exhibits were very informative, and easily understandable without the services of a guide. There is a gift shop with souvenirs, mainly for children. We had a great visit here, and would recommend for families.

The museum had exhibits on prehistoric animals that used to live in Iwaki, geology, life in a coal mining town, and about Spa Resort Hawaiians, Iwaki's main claim to fame nowadays. Most of the information was in Japanese, although there was an English handout available. Thankfully, you didn't need an awful lot of reading to appreciate the exhibits, which were real-life rather than computer-based. A giant skeleton of a dinosaur works pretty well in any language! There's a souvenir shop available. The only Japan-related geological items available was amber from the region. Not a world-class tourist attraction, but suitable for families, and people who like museums. Even better for those who can read Japanese.
