Trekking - Nechisar National Park (5 days)

By Gamo Travel Tours
About
Nechisar National Park is one of Ethiopia’s last great surviving wildernesses spanning the narrow yet mountainous ‘Bridge of God’ that separates Lakes Chamo and Abaya. It ranks among the most scenic national parks in East Africa. There’s an air of untamed grandeur that lingers over the lakes and mountains which makes this undiscovered trekking route a must see for nature, bird and animal lovers. You will hike through diverse habitats ranging from thick bush, rain forest, natural springs, acacia woodland, two Rift Valley Lakes to wide-open Savannah. Each terrain offers different wildlife including baboons, Columbus monkeys, surviving herds of Swaynes’s hartebeast, zebras, Grant gazelles, crocodiles, hippopotamus and 350 different bird species. "I absolutely loved my trek in Nechisar, the views are absolutely breathtaking, the wildlife fascinating and the camp dinners were cosy and fun" (2019 customer)

          Magical Danakil Depression, Afar, ETHIOPIA!
We took a three-day trip to the Danakil Depression. We were picked up from the Semera airport and headed straight to Ahmed Ela, the hamlet near the Asala Salt Lake some 267 KM a way in time to enjoy the famous sunset on the Salt Lake. The drive was long but it was absolutely worth it as we drove through various landscapes, including the saline lake at Afdera, desert sands, and lava rocks. We then slept in the open air, on traditional bed frame made of wood and latticed leather strapping. Amazingly, the temperature was great, in the mid-twenties, very comfortable. The next day, early in the morning we headed to Dallol, by far my favorite with the beckoning reddish brown landscape as we approached the fabulous sulfuric hot springs and complex salt deposits within a volcanic crater drenched in vibrant colours of bright yellow, red, blue and green. It was a truly spectacular, a sight to behold! Then we stopped at the Salt Mountains, a place with interesting rock formation, straight out of sci-fi movie. Before heading to the beautiful emerald green pool in the middle of salt pans for a dip and some fun. After Dallol, web started driving to Erta Ale, active volcano. After a bit of a hike shortly after 1700. We then went down to the lava field to see the volcano up close when it was spewing. It was an incredible experience. At night, night we again slept outdoors s but what we did not expect was that it could get that cold at night. We did not sleep a wink as we did not have any blanket and who would have thought that we’d be his cold at the foot of an active volcano?? All in all, it was a fabulous trip. We travelled with a security and a personal chef in tow. The food was great particularly considering how remote these places were. Thanks a lot, to Wes of Gamo Tours for organizing the trip, for being flexible and for tending to all of our needs and wants, Ermias for driving us so safely (the only vehicle that did not get stuck in the sands), and our cook Tsegaye, who woke up at ungodly hours to prepare breakfast in the middle of nowhere, and lunch and dinner! I’d highly recommend Gamo Travel Tours!

          Excellent Omovalley tour - Wes +251 91 683 1252
We did a last minute plan to tour Omo Valley and as we were travelling from India , Wes agreed to make all our bookings ( our internal flights in Ethiopia / hotel bookings etc) and we paid him only after we arrived in Addis . This takes a lot of trust on his behalf and I am very happy that we found him on Tripadvisor. Thank you TripAdvisor . He is a gem of a person Apart from this , he is a very people oriented guy and this was obvious to us when we visited many local tribes sometimes after 3 hours drive and he would know the people in each of these places by name and they would be genuinely happy to see him and us . For me that’s a great plus point in him . Skill and knowledge is one thing but genuine people skills is amazing His service right from airport pick up to airport drop and sharing all meals with us with excellent conversation skills made our trip memorable . Highly recommend this company and Wes for his superb services . We are certainly coming back for a tour of the north !!

          An incredible experience
I spent three days in Arba Minch and Dorze in August 2023 with Gamo Travel Tours and I can honestly say it was one of the best experiences I've had travelling abroad. As two women travelling alone, safety was front of mind, and we felt supported, listened to, and safe and secure every step of the way. Our tour guide, Wes, checked in with us regularly before and during the trip to ensure we were kept well informed, that the tour was tailored to our needs, and that all our questions were answered. Our night in Dorze was out of this world - it is SUCH a beautiful place and we stood in awe at the view. Our hosts at the lodge could not have been more welcoming and friendly and the services were excellent and the food delicious. It really was a magical weekend, with memories that I will treasure for a lifetime.

Great trip to Lalibela and the South
My husband and I asked Gamo Tours to put together a 2 1/2 week trip. We first went north to see Lake Tana and the rock hewn churches in Lalibela. It was Easter week - what an experience to see the Ethiopian Orthodox holy days in those areas. We then relaxed a few days in Addis before heading to the Bale mountains, Arba Minch and the south for visits to various tribal areas. We were hesitant about arranging a trip as the civil war was still fresh in our minds - but Gamo Tours assured us, and was correct - everything would be fine, we would not go to any trouble areas. The organization was superb, compliments on that. We and our guide suggested small changes as the tour progressed - and these were worked into the plans. It was a fabulous trip, and a wonderful tour. We recommend Gamo Tours highly!

Blue Nile Falls and historical Gondar - superb experience
We had only Saturday and Sunday available - including travel time - to see for ourselves something of what we had read about the Blue Nile Falls, the churches of Lake Tana and the historical sites in and around Gondar. It seemed like an impossibly tall order to expect to have enough time and attention to take in so much in just two days. Based on a personal recommendation we reached out to Gamo Travel. They understood the task straight away and somehow, as if by telepathy, understood just how we like to travel. We didn't need any change to the suggested itinerary. Much more importantly, the way it all worked out was so smooth, so hassle-free, and each little request we had - to linger here a little longer, to take the boat to the Blue Nile lake outlet on the way back, to dig deeper into this priest's story and to learn more about the book collection in the museum, to be sure to be off the main roads by nightfall - both guides (one each day, each city) were equally flexible, quick to understand, obliging and informative, whilst being good enough consultants to steer us rather than caving in to our less-informed whims! We saw more than we knew was there to be seen, learned more of the culture than we had hoped and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Choosing appropriate, caring guides for clients, selecting the right comfort level, picking the level of detail to show - these are the marks of a truly professional, tailored operation. I simply couldn't fault the service, and I'm a picky customer, honestly.

          Very Helpful Guides
I visited here with my father, and we had a great time! The rooms were very luxurious and the food was fine. We explored the Dorze Tribe with a guide named Mo'ded who was very kind and informative. We also went on a three-day trip in a van with Wegders Yonas (Phone: +251 91 683 1329). Wegders was very friendly and organized all accommodations for us for a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend it.

          Fantastic organisation and knowledgable guides
I travelled to Arba Minch and surrounding area and Omo valley tribes on a 5 day trip organised by Gamo travel tours as a party of 2. From the initial discussion about what our interests were with Wes, the personal attention to detail and approach to ensuring we had a wonderful trip was evident. In each village and market we visited, the wonderful culture of this area came to life, with expert guidance making it interesting and fun. Thank you Wes and team at Gamo!

Visiting Omo Nationalpark and Surma tribe
We were travelling two weeks with Wasagne Gedebo, Gamo Travel, to the Surma and the Omo National Park. The trip was perfectly organized by him. We experienced two exceptionally exciting weeks. We were visiting different Surma villages where people still live very self-sufficiently and authentically. Wasagne was very helpful in realizing my photographic project. There was good food every day. Wasagne was a good and reliable companion for us in all situations, which we highly recommend. We will definitely travel with him again. Switzerland, Pat and Dan

          Overpriced
I did with them the lake chamo tour. I didn't have time to organize so I called them and in a few hours the tour was organized. But then... When it was time to pay, they tried to charge me a different exchange rate than the official one. At the dock, we had no fuel and had to wait 1h before starting the tour. I didn't see any crocodile. Of course it is not their responsibility if animals are not around, but if I compare this with other lake tours I had in Etiopia (Hawassa, Tana), this was the most disappointing and most expensive. If you want to see the lake, no need of a guide, just reach the park and rent a boat; some Hotels also provide this kind of service. The captain knows where animals are (or are expected to be).

          South Ethiopia
Last week we (couple, 52y) finished a 6 days tour with Wes. We booked the trip several weeks before. Clear communication via email, no problems to modify tour upon our request (eg to include Chamo lake, to use cheaper but still clean accomodation). Deposit of 500 USD was paid beforehand (costs of our bank excluded). Unfortunately only about 460 USD arrived on his account, so probably the Ethiopian bank also took a fee. This wasn’t the case for a same payment to a tour operator for the northern part, strange. Superb that Wes didn’t make a big issue of it, thanks Wes! Tour was well organized. Excellent communication skills by Wes, in English as well in local languages with the different tribes. Also very good knowledge about the tribes and their way of living. Very good driver as well. Competitive price I think. No complaints and highly recommended. Thanks Wes!

          Best tour ever!!
Just finished a 14 day tour with Wes (Wasagne) which was amazing. My highlights were Dorze village campfire with locals singing and dancing. Also camping in Hamer village with traditional BBQ and perusing the local markets in Key afer. Having never visited Africa before I was really impressed with Wes’s knowledge of all the tribes and his fluency with the different languages - puts me to shame. Would highly recommend this if you want something a bit different and want to immerse yourself in the culture.

A journey I will not forget
My four day trip of the Omo Valley with Gamo Travel was a formidable place to begin my travels into Africa. Before we entered each village Wes gave me an in depth overview of the customs and culture of the tribe we were visiting. He then proceeded to provide his much needed assistance as I used an off camera flash to photograph these fascinating people. Staying overnight with the Hamar and visiting the Mursi people were particular highlights of my voyage into the wilderness. I only wish I had more time to meet the other tribes of the region and perhaps next time I will. Wes is an understanding host and will look out for your needs. Thank you for the help and for driving safely Gamo Travel.

Trip to Omo valley and it's tribes
Our trip for almost one week to Omo valley in Ethiopia started in Aberminch/Jinka. Wes (short for Wasagne) Gamo was there for the pick-up and through out the whole trip. Wes makes you feel very comfortable and has an impressive knowledge of his home land in general and especially of the southern tribes. Due to his close connection to the Hamer tribe we had the opportunity to stay one night in a Hamer village. This night was the peek of the trip for me, since it was such an exceptional experience so far away from the European lifestyle we are used to. Wes also tried to show us as much as possible and was in constant contact with tribes and other guides to have us witness a true bull-jumping ceremony. Even when one of my friends got sick on the trip, Wes was there to support and understood his needs. Our drivers were very skilled and we felt safe at all times. With an open heart and open soul you will broaden your horizon all guided and secured by Gamo Travel. My only downside, which refers to traveling in Ethiopia in general, would be the fact that it is quite pricy. But it is worth every penny (: Thank you Gamo Travel& see you soon.
