- N4817GWmicheleh0 contributionsnot to be missed - ask for Sanu as your guide! If you are in Kumarakom or the surrounding area, this is a wonderful local company that will assist you to explore the stunning Keralan backwaters. Everything about the experience was fantastic, from the ease of booking, to ready communication, to organizing transportation from my local accommodation. My guide Sanu was so friendly and knowledgeable, pointing out all sorts of wildlife and taking the time to explain what makes the area so special. As an avid bird nerd, he knew all of the local birds and pointed them out so that I could enjoy the impressive variety of beautiful local birds. Sanu was attentive, responsive, friendly, and very kind. When we got back to shore, I was treated to an absolutely delicious breakfast freshly prepared and served riverside. They did contact me beforehand to check in about dietary considerations, which I really appreciated. This was easily the best experience that I had in Kerala and I would highly recommend booking with Canoe Kerala. Request Sanu as your guide - you will be happy to have the experience with him!Written August 22, 2024

- RobynR3740 contributionsA great way to get a taste of life in the Backwaters of Kerala. This may not be the cheapest Backwaters Tour available, but it was definitely worth the money. We were picked up from our hotel at 3 15 and taken down to the place from where the tour started. There we were greeted by the charming Sanu and his lovely wife Sidha and the programme for the afternoon and evening explained. From there we were taken on a small boat down the narrow canals of the backwaters, seeing beautiful birds, lotus and water hyacinths and the village people who live on thr banks of the canal for about two hours, returning to Sanu's pretty traditionally built home to pick up cups of chai and an Indian snack, before heading out to the lake to watch the sun go down. From there we headed back to our hosts' house where we were treated to a cooking demonstration in Sanu and Sidha's spotlessly clean kitchen - and were then able to eat the delicious food that they had cooked . We were finally taken back to our hotel about 9.30. It was a great experience and we would thoroughly recommend it.Written March 22, 2024

- clairegraff0 contributionsAmazing people and immersive cultural experienceLook no further - book here! The passion and care from Canoe Kerala is unmatched. We did the 6 hr sunrise canoe with village life and cooking class. We felt safe with the food, which was delicious, and learned so much about local life and cooking Indian food. They worked with us on our interests and dietary restrictions. The backwaters were lovely with the lilies and we wouldn’t change a thing.Written February 25, 2024

- Safari204192046240 contributionsStunning sunrise kayak tourWe rose early at 05.30 but it really was worthwhile. A fantastic guided kayak trip up river past stunning water lilies. Our guide was very knowledgable and we learned about local life and the ecology of the river and surrounding land. The breakfast afterwards was superb. Highly recommended when you are here, be ready to get in and out of kayaks for local tea and Tody demonstration.Written February 12, 2024
- Limingde120 contributionsBest possible Kerala excursionThis is an extraordinary tour of the backwaters that takes you in the opposite direction of all the other tours. Indeed, I didn’t see another tourist for the first 8 hours of the excursion. Sanu was very kind and adjusted the tour to fit my interests. The breakfast at the beginning and the lunch at the end were both delicious, the best food I ate while in India for over 3 weeks.Written January 29, 2024
- R4592DQsusanw0 contributionsBest way to experience the Backwater!!!We were worried that an entire day on the Backwaters would be too much. We were also concerned that it would be very touristy because we'd read reports of so many houseboats. Instead we were blown away. We had an absolutely brilliant day. It was a great call to do the full day trip because it allowed us to travel far away from the tourist houseboats on little canals. In fact we only saw one other tourist boat the entire day. It was a splendid day on the backwaters expertly navigated by Sanu, taking in as much local colour and natural wonder you can soak up in a day. It's a pleasant temperature on the water with a breeze from the boat movement. We got a real taste for village life, we saw lots of birds, were fed delicious food, Sanu sourced beers for us when we were thirsty - our every requirement was anticipated and provided for. What a treat. A real find and we think the very best way to experience the Backwaters! We stayed at Little Chembaka before and after the trip and this really is a special spot!!!Written January 16, 2024
- RR4970 contributionsPerfect afternoon & evening in Kerala backwaters!I booked the sunset cruise with dinner for my parents and myself. It was a fantastic experience. The canoe had comfortable seating and was covered. We saw tons of local birds. Our guide pointed out the different species and stopped so we could take photos. The food we had was excellent. Before sunset we enjoyed tea and a tasty snack made with coconut, jaggery, and bananas. The dinner was a delicious selection of local dishes such as fish and tapioca. We have multiple dietary restrictions and health issues in my family, and the chef did an outstanding job accommodating us. The kitchen is very professional and hygienic. We also had a great chat over dinner. Highly recommend this tour. We could not have expected anything better!Written January 14, 2024
- alankritaa20240 contributionsGreat day our kayaking, and fantastic fresh food!My partner and I booked the sunset kayaking tour (3-6pm), which took us to the unexplored parts of the backwaters and then on to Vembanad Lake. We spotted several unique birds and learnt about the backwaters ecosystem, and life in the areas around. After 6pm, we were treated to a delightful dinner, freshly prepared in a live cooking class. They were able to cater to our dietary needs as well, and provided great hospitality overall! Just a note that the available kayaks are double seaters, but that did not take away from the experience.Written January 5, 2024
- notforvendetta_V0 contributionsFantastic two tripsWe had a great experience on the mid day canoe cruise followed by local food. The followed up the next day with the sunset kayaking and food again. It was the perfect way to have explored the backwaters. We made fantastic memories and enjoyed chatting with Jess and Wilme and hearing about how the area has changed.Written January 5, 2024
- JimmyKern0 contributionsHighly recommended. We took two tours (the sunset and sunrise cruises), stayed the night at their lovely cabin, and enjoyed a lovingly-prepared Kerala meal. The pride and pleasure that Sanu and his colleagues take in their community and its natural environment are infectious. The two days we spent in Kumarakom were a perfect way to cap off our five-weeks in India.Written January 5, 2024

This was the highlight of our trip to Kerala. We were picked up on the river in a boat with a canopy (canoe) from our riverside hotel. The sun was beginning to rise and it was beautiful. Our guide steered the boat through waterways that the bigger boats cannot go down. We loved watching village life on the banks of the waterway. There were fascinating birds everywhere (kingfishers, little cormorants, egrets, kites, herons etc etc.) At the end of the trip we were taken to a beautiful wooden house on the river with an open dining room where we were served a delicious freshly cooked breakfast. This was a trip like no other. It was simply idyllic. The young people who run the company were friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend this trip. If there is any advice I would say ring up the day before to confirm the exact time and location of pickup. A superb experience.

We had the most wonderful morning with Sanu, arriving before dawn and quietly cruising up through the narrow backwaters as the sun rose through the trees. The water was mirror calm and it was fantastic to see the canals wake, taking tea in a locals house, meeting the local farmers and observing the daily activities around the waterways.
We had considered going on either a day tour or overnight on a houseboat, but we chose this instead. It was the right choice (we accessed canals no big boat could, and with very little fuel used, extremely more sustainable way to experience the backwaters).
Our breakfast was one of the best we’ve had in Kerala, which topped off a great morning’s activities.

I would highly recommend the sunrise tour to anyone visiting Kerala; it was our favourite activity of our entire trip. The boats are comfortable and not too big, so you’re able to go into some smaller canals where you can see the village life and local farmers. This is something you can’t experience if you take one of the bigger houseboats, as they can’t reach there. On top of all of this, the breakfast served was the best food we had during our entire stay in India!
The guide, Sanu, was incredibly friendly and taught us a lot about the flora and fauna around us.
If you’re in doubt about whether or not it’s worth waking up extra early for this, I can tell you it definitely is! And be sure to bring your camera along, as you’re going to want to take lots of photos :)

I set off in a small wooden traditional canoe, it was cool and peaceful and as Samu paddled quietly through the narrow backwaters we saw the sun slowly rise!
There were the most amazing array of birds, flowers and lush vegetation. We visited a local chai place and experienced the skills of a toddy tapper!

Sanu he is a wonderful guide with a great sense of humour. He Navigated the backwaters expertly. He is an expert bird and we spotted many local birds. We saw the sunrise through the trees while we were floating through beautiful water lilies, which is an experience that will stay for us for years to. He is a local and knows everybody in the village which made her experience truly authentic. We stopped to have chai with the village locals. We also took a walk through the village and experienced the amazing art of toddy tapping.
All in all a wonderful morning :)

We took a sunrise trip with Sanu in his small boat with an awning. It meant we were close to the water to see things in detail but a stable boat so no wobbling! Watching the sun rise as a red ball above the trees was special. The bird life on the water is exceptional and Sanu knew much about what we were seeing. We travelled down a number of small canals and stopped for a welcome cup of tea in a village. Taking a boat trip from Kamarakom is highly recommended as there are few other boats out on the water and for most of our trip there were none. A very special experience which will stay in our memories a long time.

What an amazing experience. These guys are great. We've used them twice now and each time the whole thing was fantastic. They arranged collection from our hotel at 5.30 a.m. Truly amazing views of the backwaters at sunrise and topped off by seeing village life awake to another day. We finished it off with a superb breakfast and would highly recommend this to anyone who is thinking of exploring the backwaters. You won't have a better trip anywhere!

What a wonderful serene experience this was with Sanu. Trip started early to watch the sun rising over the beautiful coconut tree lined waterways.
We stopped for bananas and a gossip at the “community” spot, then watched and tasted the local “toddy” being drained.
I had the chance to make coir rope with another local lady but failed miserably, she was definitely the expert.
Trip continued along waterways seeing birds and village life whilst we photographed the scenery.
Back at the start we had a traditional breakfast cooked by his mama in the stunning Homestay he has available on Airbnb.
Sanu was a perfect host.

The Morning cruise with Canoe Kerala is simply amazing. You get to see the most picturesque lilies, beautiful birds and the village folk going about their daily routine. The best part of the experience was the interaction with the locals which included some great chai at the local tea stall, weaving coconut leaves and coir making. We were lucky enough to watch some toddy tapping and taste the freshest toddy too.
Sanu and his team have the heart to make tourists experience the true beauty of Kerala. A must try experience for everyone!
