Wine Museum The Frrud Winery Project was born about 3 years ago from the dream of two young people from the city of Altamura. The terms that can describe them are certainly passion and determination; passion in believing firmly in the potential of our land and determination not only to preserve, but also to recover a place of great historical importance, to return it to the city and above all to leave it for future generations. The two young men, Paolo Colonna and Donato Scalera are not born as wine experts, but the strong passion that unites them for their land and especially for the recovery of the ancient places of the local area, pushes them to embark on this project. A commitment that required more than a year of hard work, in which the common interest was to bring to light as faithfully as possible, all the objects that had remained preserved in the 70 years of inactivity of the structure. This has allowed us to give life to objects with more than 100 years of history and make the winery a place where the passage of men and generations who have literally lived those places, those objects, is evident and tangible. The story, the passion and the dream materialize when the earth with its smells and essences falls within the structure, bottled in the wines present in the Cellar. The return of the wine returns the lifeblood of the whole structure, in the story of a history made of respect for the past traditions, of recovery of the ancient winemaking techniques, but above all of enhancement of the beauty and power that a 100% natural product can give away. Today the Frrud Winery is a museum open to the public where it is impossible not to be moved by the story told by the two young people and which is visible to anyone in the objects and products within the structure. Not just a visit, but an emotion that starts from the living land and that, through the passion of the two boys, reaches the heart of everyone.

Fantastic experience, passionate and very tasty wine
Paola and Donato have “unearthed” a brilliant wine museum dated back to 1572 with lots of hard work and passion. The museum is very interesting and Paola’s tour fun and informative. Then down to the cellar for tasting and yummy local food. We tasted 3 wines which were all superb but varied. We enjoy being able to chat with these 2 very passionate young men who shared their journey with us. They were also interested in our experiences with wine at home and elsewhere. If you are in Altamura don’t miss this enjoyable and very good value for money tour.

Impressive two young people and the place
Before going to Altamura, I emailed Paolo, one of the Wine museum creator asked about the details of their tour. Paolo responded immediately with the very helpful information including the timeline of Altamura annual festival! We were very lucky that we didn’t miss anything for the day trip in Altamura! Thanks Paolo! Not only we enjoyed the fantastic festival parade, but had a pleasure to meet the two great young men, who founded the precious museum! There are many amazing exhibitions that telling us the ancient wine making history!

      Awesome experience
The passion and hard work Paolo and Donato have put into this place are outstanding. Every piece in the museum has its history and they will tell you all of it. Their exclusive organic red vines are of exceptional taste and shipping to our home address was no problem and quite inexpensive. My advise: When in Altamura, make an effort to find Cantina Frrud, enjoy great hospitality and buy some of the great Primitivo grape reds.

      Absolutely Wonderful Experience
Part museum, part wine tasting. All remarkable. Paolo and Donato made a point of explaining in detail the history of each piece of ancient winemaking equipment and shared with us their excellent local wine and the absolute best focaccia we have ever tasted. Do not miss this once-in-a-lifetime experience in Altamura.

      Fantastic local experience
A delightful experience if you are around Altamura. Our visit to La Cantina Frrud was definitely a highlight of our trip! Paolo and Donato are incredible hosts and have passionately restored an Altamura icon with many interesting stories about the history of La Cantina Frrud and Altamura wine. The wine itself was delicious and well complemented by local breads and cheeses which Paolo and Donato supplied. Great wine, great space, great people. Highly recommended!

      Amazing local taste of altamura
We had a wonderful visit to this lovingly restored wine cellar. Paolo and Donato were so welcoming, they gave us a great tour of the place then sat and chatted as we sampled a few of their delicious wines and wonderful local cheeses. The wines are so unique, from their taste, to the way they are bottled and labelled. Superb! They went above and beyond on a Sunday when we were struggling to find a bus and actually drove us to the next town where we were staying that night. Thankyou for a wonderful visit. I look forward to ordering your wines and hopefully returning for the medieval festival in April!

      Super cool!
They kept the all the cave as they produced the wine in the 15th century and will explain you how they make it. Those people are really nice, we tasted the wine and I can say that it was the best I've tried in Italy this year. super nice experience!

As a drinker of Italian red wine in general and especially of Primitivo, I really wanted to do a wine tasting while travelling around Puglia in Sept. 2022.
As 2 of our party of 4 were not really wine enthusiasts, we opted against higher priced wine tastings offered in the area and for La Cantina Frrud based on good reviews and the fact that the museum offered something on top of the tasting. Thus, expectations were high, our experience was better than we could have hoped.
Communication with Paolo was perfect from the booking onwards. He is one of the owners who personally takes the visitor on the tour through the history of his old former winery, he and his partner restored from the grounds up to open the museum.
His passion and knowledge for this gem, the excellent wine and delicious regional food - cheese, bread, their own olive oil and focaccia served in generous amounts - made our stay a very special and memorable experience, I couldn’t praise high enough and would highly recommend to everyone!

Booking in advance is mandatory, which guarantees for a small group and very friendly atmosphere. If you travel by car, park outside the old city centre and allow some time to find a spot.
If you travel light: The very delicious wine can be bought with shipping to your home.

How to experience a great museum visit? Book the tour&tasting of La Cantina Frrud!
Right from the start you feel Paolo's passion for this place. He takes you through the history of the place and the functions it had.
The wines and bites were delicious. I personally very much liked the atmosphere and also the communication to arrange or visit was already fast and friendly.

In this region where it's so easy (and nearly mandatory) to see the usual touristic highlights, I'd strongly recommend to visit La Cantina Frrud and enjoy the history, passion and wines in a personal setting.

Paolo, many thanks again! We've really enjoyed our visit!

We were a group of friends in Puglia knowing nothing about wine and thought that if we are in Italy we should see know how the wine is made and go tasting. So we searched and found this and thought that yeah it will okay. So we got an appointment. It's was a little bit hassle but it was worth it. For the price we paid we got so much. There was amazing local food and so much wine and a lecture off the wine making. I think we were there for 3 hours talking and eating and drinking. Its was amazing experience. The guys really do it with their heart and soul and the visitation was really personalized. We left there with a really good feeling. Stomach was full and head was buzzed from the wine. I think i have never drink so much wine in such a short period of time. I even didn't have a hangover xd. So it shows its a good wine. I will definitely recommend this to everyone that are in the region. Huges and kisses to the hard working guys. Keep the business on!!!

La Cantina Frrud is a lovely little old winey. It had fallen into disrepair but has since taken on a new life as a museum, housing a number of interesting artefacts, including wine making tools and other curiosities that were found at the site.

Paulo, our guide, introduced the building and the artefacts in a way that gave us a good understanding of the historical wine making processes in the region as well as the way wine fitted into local life. Getting to try some local wine afterwards was also a treat!

The tour was great! We got to know about the history of this great place and the history of how the wine has been made earlier. Also, the wine tasting was excellent - the wine was made for this place and tasted good. The whole tour and tasting was with individual approach - we got answers to all our questions and had really nice chat with the owner of this place.

It is really impressive and beautiful what Paolo and Donato have found and created in the old town of Altamura: Paolo showed us a lot of different tools, barrels and wine presses that were used looong time ago. He explained es everthing and you can see that he is really passionater about their museum, their treasures there and - of course - their amazing wine.
We could taste a lot of different local products like different kinds of cheese, focaccia, the special bread of Altamura and the high quality organic red wines of Paolo and Donato. And if you like trying high quality food and want to taste the real Apulia you should book the tour and enjoy every minute, every bite and every sip. :) I will come back for sure with other friends to show them this pearl.

Paolo was knowledgeable and told an amazing story about the history of this place. The wine tasting at the end was divine. His attention to detail in presenting this history, in partnering with a vineyard that’s local, in sharing the wine tasting with food, and in working with that vineyard to produce amazing wine that has a unique artistic flair was appreciated. This is a tour you cannot and should not miss if you are in Puglia. I would be amazed if you left this place without at least one bottle of their wine.

My husband and I had a tour of this lovely museum during our honeymoon and it was both educational and entertaining, and the wine and cheese tasting was wonderful! The back story to how the wine museum came to be is great, and you really get a feel for how wine was made in the mid-1900s. We had our tour with Paolo and you can tell that his heart is in this wine museum. Book the tour, it will not disappoint!

We cannot say enough good things about the museum and its owner, Paolo.

If you are looking for a great experience and want to learn about some historic wine making in Italy, this is a visit you need to make. Paolo, one of the owners, is one of the most passionate people we have met. The museum is a part-time passion for Paolo and you can tell the minute you start talking to him.

The museum is open a few days a week only, so you will want to call ahead of time to enquire about availability. The tour is with a small group of people; we were a total of 8, and we met some lovely folks from Malta and France.

The museum is quaint in size and is nondescript, hiding behind, beautiful wood doors.

Once you enter, you see and sense the history dating back to the late 1500's. With a lot of blood, sweat and tears, Paolo and team were able to restore the wine making area to its glory, including the restoration of the old equipment used to press the grapes into wine.

Paolo recounts the history of the museum and some great stories about how the elderly locals helped him learn about wine making that tool place at the museum.

Once you get to tour the cave / cellar, that is where more fun begins. Get ready for some more history, but also get ready for some wine tasting along side a beautiful table of different types of focaccia, cheese and olive oil. You feel spoiled with the generous tasting of at least 4 wines and the delicious food offered up by the host, Paolo.

If we are ever back in Altamura, we would definitely go back to say hello to Paolo and to thank him again, in person for the great and personalized tour and afternoon that we experienced.

La Cantina Fruud is an amazing story and a fantastic experience. Paolo and his partner have great passion for the history and the business and this shows through their hard work. The tour is very interesting and they have some great historical pieces. What is great is that everything they are offering is from the local region. The wine tasting and accompanying food gives a great taste for what the region has to offer. Book this as soon as possible, you won't be disappointed.
