- 1Before embarking on the boat, you will have a briefing about fireflies and our safety measures. You will then take the river cruise at about 8pm, when it's pretty dark. You will travel down the river and the leader will shine his torch towards the trees and with that 100's of fireflies will slowly fly towards the boat. The leader will also share with you all about the behavior of fireflies, watching the little lights glide across the water to the boat is almost mystical. Join this tour and have a wonderful night with your family and kids!
About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Shanno740 contributionsA must do for the family when visiting Cherating or KuantanThe release of turtle hatchlings ranks among the top of life's memorable experience for me. The experience was well executed beginning with proper registration of guests and hatchlings divided into enough boxes for every group to enjoy their a personal experience admiring these rambunctious babies and naming them, with many praying over them. The guide's informative briefing before the event set a nice tone with interesting insights to understand turtles and their habitats better. Between the 3 of us we had 7 hatchlings to release on a beautiful Cherating beach. Watching them scramble instinctively towards the start of a challenging life filled me with awe and respect for the Creator and Creation.Written August 30, 2024
- malaysianconnie0 contributionsCherating Fire Fly whispererWe booked a nite fire fly tour with Hafiz and was pleasantly suprised by his ability to call the fireflies to come perform for him. It was an interesting experience, and although the number of fireflies are not as much as Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor, there were places where there were a fair bit of them. To see them twinkling like little stars, and moving to land on the person infront of you, is quite an experience. Coupled with the stars above, and the shiloutte of the trees against the night sky, and the still of night broken only by the purr of the boat engine is quite an experience. For RM45 per person for an hour is quite worth the while considering Hafiz is quite knowledgeable in this field, and have taken a 5 year.course to learn to communicate with fireflies. Good to educate children about the fireflies too.Written September 9, 2020
- lunarJade0 contributionsKeep your eyes peeled for wildlifeCherating is not all about the beach. We went for a 1 1/2-hour mangrove river cruise with Hafiz's Cherating Activities at 9 a.m. As it was high tide (high water level), the departure was at another jetty further upstream located across Jalan Kuantan-Kemaman (federal road #3 - essentially after the bridge) from the main Cherating area. We drove our own vehicles to the said departure point which is less than a kilometre away. Our boatman did not say very much but have a keen eyesight. He spotted three yellow-ringed cat snakes (or mangrove snakes), mangrove crabs and the very adorable dusky-leaf monkeys (or spectacled langurs). Birds can be heard but very difficult to spot. We saw a collared kingfisher and a Brahminy kite. Did not see a water monitor lizard although they are usually very common in such a habitat (saw one the next day rummaging through rubbish near a bin together with some long-tailed macaques). The journey along the Cherating river is serene and picturesque with mangrove trees with fascinating air roots and some Nipah palms lined up on both sides of the river under the beautiful blue sky. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and apply sunblock to protect yourself against the sun's rays. All in all, an enjoyable outing to appreciate our natural heritage - both the wildlife and the mangroves.Written August 27, 2020

- Scooter23190 contributionsDANGEROUS AND UNINSURED BUSINESSMy wife and I rented a kayak from Hafiz and after one hour of paddling, the kayak took in water and the kayak sank. Upon getting rescued from the dirty river, The owner, Hafiz admitted that he was aware that the kayak was unsafe. He told us that there had been a large crack in the bottom and holes duct taped. He promised to compensate us and make things right. I lost my iPhone which had been wrapped in plastic and also my wallet with 450 RMS inside. He admitted to not having liability insurance and after three separate conversations did not compensate us at all. We found ourselves in a potentially very dangerous situation. Had we been further up the river, there was the potential of not getting rescued for hours in the humid heat with limited drinking water I would not recommend this company as the risk of accident could be quite harmful to unsuspecting tourists expecting a safe journey.Written November 8, 2019
- Carfield0 contributionsVery good experienceFor family who lives in the city and can't see the fire flies. This is indeed a must go tour. Along the mangrove river, our of the lights. Only moonlight lead your way to fire flies.Written June 23, 2019
- Jamescmurray0 contributionsA magical experienceWe did both the firefly and the turtle tour which were both excellent. The fireflies began with an introduction from Hafiz who clearly knows his fireflies. We then went in a convoy of 4 boats up the river which in itself is pretty cool at night! The fireflies were magical, like something out of Peter Pan so thoroughly recommend the experience! The Turtle tour was even better though! We were met at a petrol station about 20 mins further north (we had our own transport) and then taken down to a beach in the dark where a ranger showed a huge green turtle laying 96 eggs! An awesome sight and feel blessed to have seen it! Also learnt quite a lot about the turtles while we there before mamma turtle finally waddled off back into the sea. A must do on your trip if you can 🐢Written June 19, 2019

- Mokciknab0 contributionsMagical ExperienceWe take a boat into the dark recesses of the mangrove forest, and once we leave civilization and light pollution behind, the magic begins. Fireflies twinkle in the mangrove trees along the riverbank, and then amazingly, fly towards you, as if to greet your guide, and their friend, Mr Hafiz. Mr Hafiz has been studying Cherating fireflies and conserving their mangrove habitat for about 6 years, in collaboration with Japanese conservationist Prof Ohba Nubuyoshi and the Malaysian Nature Society. He generously shared with us his vast knowledge about these beautiful insects and best of all, his uncanny ability to communicate with them. This trip is a must if you're in Cherating and Kuantan - you will have a newfound respect for mother nature and realize the importance of preserving the mangrove forests. Here's a picture of the river before sundown, prior to the boatride. We were not allowed to use our phone during the trip, so that we don't scare the fireflies away.Written December 20, 2018

- Bernard C0 contributionsMagicalBeing surrounded by firefly called on demand by the tour in the middle of a very dark night on a boat is surreal. Never done anything like this before. I just wish the boat were electric: No gas smell, and no noise would make it even betterWritten October 9, 2018
- Sineadceinwen0 contributionsMagicalWe loved seeing all the fireflies! It really was magical and exciting. They could make this tour better by actually giving some information and explanation before the tour .Written September 28, 2018

- Scott M0 contributionsVery enjoyableA great couples experience. A brief talk before the boat ride to explain what we are going to see and to raise awareness of the fireflies from Hafiz himself. Then a short boat ride to the fireflies and there is no shortage of fireflies to see, from the start to finish there is always plenty to see and enjoy. RecommendedWritten July 31, 2018
- Michelle K0 contributionsA Must-Do Amazing ExperienceThe Cherating Firefly experience started with a briefing given by Mr Hafiz himself. He explained to us the things he himself had learnt over the last 5 to 6 years about the fireflies found along this particular river. He was informative which helped us to understand why we are able to see the FireFlies along this Cherating river almost the whole year round. We were very fortunate to be in the boat manned by Mr Hafiz himself, among the many boats which headed out all at the same time. He slowly showed us where to look for the FireFlies as we made our way up and down the river. His passion as a guide and the love for his study of the FireFlies is an added bonus for us. He let us experience the FireFlies close up by calling for them to fly from the trees to where our boat was resting with a special light. He cautioned us during his briefing conducted prior to the boat ride to not hit the FireFlies or try to trap them. Just let them fly and land wherever they wanted to land and enjoy the amazing awesome experience. It was an unforgettable night where we experienced nature in a very relaxing, interesting, educational and professional way. This is definitely a must-do activity if you are visiting Kuantan and the price is really value for money because you can learn so much and see so much. Everyone must put on a life jacket before boarding the boat, so it is very safe and even the children will enjoy and be awed by what they have seen.Written July 31, 2018

Me and my friends booked the Firefly tour yesterday. Thanks Irman, a friendly staff from Club Med Cherating who arranged the tour for us. Overall, the tour is still worth a visit for first timer to experience the magical night. But, I was so disappointed to see the organizer who did not put his mask on during the briefing session. A sensitive time like this with the covid19 cases is piling up, everybody should play their part, protect themself and the ppl around! So, Pls put your mask on!

A little disappointed because in the end there were not many fireflies.
The weather was stormy and that may have played a role.
We are aware that it is nature and its imponderables.
What really ruined the experience was the boat exhaust. We were divided into 6 boats, navigation is done at low speed following each other. We breathed the exhaust fumes for almost an hour. Considering the activity, electric motors would be perfectly suited.

We did the first tour with Hafiz in 2012, and we found it a fantastic experience for everyone visiting Cherating. Watching the behavior of the fireflies and learning about their uniqueness in the hundreds / thousands of species is really great.
Hafiz has come a very long way but his passion and involvement continues to be the same. Really committed to preserve the environment and ecology of the mangrove while providing an educational point to the visitors.
Don’t miss it!

It was fantastic out on the boats to see the fireflies. Mr. Hafiz is very knowledgeable and provides a lot of information about the fireflies themselves, including the chemical that causes them to light up! You will get up close and personal to the fireflies and it is very tranquil out on the river at night seeing the stars as well. I would highly recommend doing this tour while you are in Cherating.

I was on the firefly watching tour two weeks ago, I hope they will stop this practice of luring fireflies from their safe habitat to boats just so tourists can touch or catch them, I believe this is directly causing the decrease in numbers of fireflies in the wild. They fly across the river when they saw the signal and by the time they realised its not another fireflies waiting to mate, and wanting to fly back they are exhausted and fell into river eaten by fish. If you are planning on going to this tour and care about the wild, share your opinion with the owner. I'm sure we can still watch them from far.. As a business, I'm sure they will want to preserve this natural wonder too so that they can continue this tourism business for longer period of time, please respect the fireflies spaces and right to live. Thank you.

Dear Samantha,
Thanks for your comment taken into consideration. The tour we offer are first for educational reason, we are trying to sensitize people about the mangrove and the risk of deforestation and its devastating effects on our nature. If no more forests and mangroves, fireflies will disappear, so we are trying our best to share with our visitors.
As you probably noticed during our briefing, we also request our guest not to touch or catch our friendly fireflies but we cannot act like police during the tour.. so everyone should act responsibly. Hope to welcome you again, and thanks for your visit.

The company name is Hafiz Activities Cherating. And yes, it is owned by a very interesting gentleman Hafiz. It's his show. It's his magic and its wonderful. Everything about this tour is flawless and worthwhile.
Firstly, its night time. Secondly, you go on boats in stark darkness. And finally, you get the most magical experience of seeing thousands of fireflies and Hafiz with his special technique makes the fireflies come towards you from their home in the mangrove trees. All these things make this really unique and worthwhile.
A little bit about Hafiz. He will first enter at the orientation hall like a Bollywood hero. And then he will give a fascinating short briefing on the tour with aggressive hand movements and funny stories. So, very interesting. Then he will take you for the tour. Yes, he not only comes for the tour, but actually operates 1 out of the 4 boats. And then he does magic. He has few torch lights (if I remember correctly 4) which emit different kinds of light. The light will appear red. But as per Hafiz it is not red. Also, these are made by Hafiz himself as in from his own experience he has made these lights which emit a kind of light and in that intensity which creates magic. And the magic is this. You are sitting in stark darkness in the boat in the mangrove river and you can see the fireflies all around on the mangrove trees. But they are sitting in the trees. All the boats are still and quiet (engines shut off). And then Hafiz takes out his magic torches and starts flashing them in a particular fashion and my god, like magic, the fireflies start going towards him and therefore will come all over the boats. Some may even sit on you. Some you can just gently cusp in your hands and see them emitting their chemically reacting lights. Wow, simply breathtaking. And Hafiz is the magician. Not only that he does the tour in flawless and effective manner. The arrangements are top class. The briefing, the jetty, the boats, everything is so well organized. Truly worth every penny you spend.
Few observations/tips:
- On google maps, you will find the place as Hafiz activities. Easy to find the place though Waze or Google Maps. Also, Cherating is a small place so wont be more than 5-15 minutes from wherever you are staying.
- The tour starts at sharp 7.30 pm. You are advised to reach at 7.15 pm and you can spend some time at the briefing/waiting hall and go through all the valuable information on fireflies and mangrove.
- There is enough parking space for cars, buses. So, not need to fret on that.
- There is a air conditioned waiting / briefing hall. This has information all over on the walls on mangroves and fireflies. Very valuable information about how fragile our ecosystem is and how we should be responsible global citizens in protecting nature.
- Hafiz does a 5 minutes briefing at 7.30 pm sharp. Please listen to him carefully.
- Post briefing you are given your life vests and then taken to the jetty. Then they call out each group by name and tell you to proceed to the jetty which is a very nicely organized jetty made of floating boxes with 4 slots which has 4 boats. Each boat can seat around 30 people. There are 10-12 rows of 3 seats in a row.
- Each boat is handled by a person who sits behind. Hafiz is the commander of a particular boat. Don't feel bad if you are not on his boat. Doesn't make a difference as everybody gets to experience the fireflies.
- Then the boat move briskly in the dark. And hats off to the pilots who command the boats. In all the darkness, the 4 boats will go next to each other. But, not even once will they touch each other. The hallmark of a well orchestrated show.
- Hafiz will ensure that each boat gets to experience the fireflies properly. By turn.
- You will get to experience the fireflies coming to you at least 4-5 times. So, just sit back and enjoy each one. You cannot get enough.
- For God's sake please don't grasp the fireflies or hurt them in any ways. Be very careful when you hold them in your hands. Please don't hurt them. They are too beautiful to be hurt.
- For God's sake please forget your cellphones and enjoy the spectacle with your eyes for once. Anyways, Hafiz makes it very clear not to use the phones to click pictures and everybody obeys. The situation is such that you will not feel like taking out your phones.
- The office area also has a cafe which has basic stuff like cold drinks, water, etc. Also, few local merchandise which is nothing special.
- The tour takes 1 hour exactly. So, by 8.30 pm you are back.
- You don't need to be worried about mosquitoes. At the beginning we saw lot of people applying mosquito repellents. But, trust me they are not required. Because when you are on the mangrove river in the dark, there are no mosquitoes.
- The boats go under a low level bridge which is also quite amusing. You are sitting and the bridge just goes very near your head. You can touch with your hands! Please don't stand up because you will get big time hit by the low level road bridge going above the river.
- We booked through Trip Advisor and through their company, Viator. For 4 of us, it costed RM 250. So, it is RM 62.5 each. Am sure you can book directly with Hafiz also but have no idea what the price is. Will be a good idea to check and see which one is cheaper.
- We booked in advance. But, the phone number given by TA/Viator of Hafiz Activities on the voucher is WRONG!! TA/Viator please make a note of this. So, I got the right number from Google.
That's it. Have nothing more to say except that YOU MUST EXPERIENCE THIS!!!

Hafiz’s Cherating Activities knowingly rents out damaged kayaks. Our kayak suddenly took on water and sank in the mangrove river. We floated in the river for about 500 meters before finding a place to land and get help. Hafiz admitted that he was Previously aware that the kayak was not water worthy and has refused to compensate us for our losses. Hafiz also advised us that his business is under insured. His blatant disregard for the safety of his customers is alarming and likely to extend to his fleet of firefly tour boats. Please exercise extreme caution if considering going on a tour or renting equipment.

We went under Hafiz’s Cherating Activities. Hafiz himself was a passionate firefly researcher, he has his own ways to communicate with the fireflies via light and sound. The fireflies will fly towards your boat and you’ll be instantly touched by the beauty of it, when a swarm of blinking lights are flying towards you and land on your palms. This is definitely a tour worth making!
Note: no use of cameras, phones are allowed during the tour as it will disturb the habitat of fireflies.

Sungai Cherating is special in that the fireflies here are of the Pteroptyx bearni species, which are congregating non-synchronous fireflies. This is unlike the congregating fireflies of Sungai Selangor that belong to the synchronous Pteroptyx tener variety and flash in unison. Fireflies emit light to communicate with one another.
We elected to go for the 8:40 p.m. tour, instead of the earlier session of 7:30 p.m, just to make sure it would be pitch dark. After journeying a distance upriver, our guide, Hafiz, instructed his team (using a series of whistles) to manoeuvre the boats such that the boats were all close together, reminding all visitors to keep their hands within the boat for safety. Hafiz started by giving a briefing to all visitors on the river. He shared knowledge about the fireflies and their live cycle, adding in some stories about his experiences and observation. Malaysia is blessed to have fireflies in a number of our river systems throughout the country; and also solitary fireflies that reside in our jungles. Firefly populations are declining worldwide due to light pollution, destruction of habitat, the use of pesticides and herbicides, and river pollution.
As we travelled further upriver, we saw blinking lights low on the mangrove trees ... the fireflies!! It was an amazing show by mother nature.
Hafiz flashed a dim red light to call the fireflies to fly towards the boats. It was surreal to watch the fireflies take off and fly towards us, twinkling above the water. Some would even come to rest on us before flitting away. Truly breathtaking! We were simply awestruck by Hafiz's ability to communicate with the fireflies. Over about an hour, he prompted the fireflies for this 'performance' quite many times.
No doubt it was a magical experience beyond imagination. However, this practice would undeniably affect the fireflies negatively. 'Calling the fireflies' to fly towards the boats would mean interfering with the fireflies' communication and cause the fireflies to exert energy to fly. It is concerning knowing that an adult firefly's main focus is to find a mate and reproduce; not forgetting also that the firefly's stage of life as an adult beetle is a very short time span of between a few days to a week only.
This ability and practice allows Hafiz to differentiate himself from other firefly tours and to make it an unforgettable experience for visitors. However, we could have done without repeated performances of this. Already communicated to Hafiz so we can only hope he will make changes for the better to make his firefly tours more ethical. Ecotourism can be a way to generate sustainable financing for protecting nature and incomes for local businesses and households.
We noticed some visitors whipping out their phones to take pictures or videos, although we were expressly prohibited from taking any. The light emitted from devices such as mobile phones and camera screens have a detrimental effect on the firefly population. It would be good for Hafiz and his team to remind the visitors even whilst on the river, including appreciating by observation but not touching the fireflies. No issue with mosquitoes, all the better as we did not apply any insect repellent just in case it may harm the fireflies. We very much enjoyed the quietness and stillness of the night (if you ignore the boat engine sounds and fumes) surrounded by the wondrous fireflies!

Bonjour,
