About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- cwigle1903120 contributionsDisappointing and poor customer serviceMy son went with three of his friends - second visit in two years for my son who was given a voucher after his last visit as there was no sharks I know that a shark presence can’t be gauranteed but again no sharks! This time my son was told he wouldn’t be issued with another voucher - I sent an email to the company to complain but at the time of writing this review I have not had a response!Written March 25, 2024
- E2321QQneilh0 contributionsVery disappointedWe had this tour booked for a few months. Initially the commas were fine, using WhatsApp with Eileen at shark zone. However, the day before our planned tour, we were informed that the time of the tour had change to 12.00 from 10.00, and as we were arriving by cruise ship, that also potentially left us short of time. However, when we arrived at the offices they were empty. Not just no people, I mean empty - no seats , no desk, no computer, absolutely nothing. There was a cleaner mopping the floor who had no clue what we were talking about and nothing else. We went to a nearby tourist information office and the chap there knew White Shark - he phoned them on our behalf and we were told the tour had been cancelled. The following dialogue between us, Shark and Shark Zone was confused and vague. They tried to suggest the cruise line - Norwegian Dawn - had booked up the morning slots. This was an absolute fabrication. No excursions whatsoever had been booked by the ship later verified when we arrived back on board. So we literally found out the tour was cancelled literally when we arrived at the “offices”, and no one was there. We got our money back without issue, but the point is that the comms were dire, no one contacted us at any point, we were effectively lied to for the reasonings around changing the cruise time. The reason for the PM cancellation was given as weather and sea conditions, which is fair enough as it was windy, but had we been informed in advance , we could have made alternative plans for our stay in Mossel Bay.Written March 19, 2024
- Christopher P0 contributionsGreat White in Mossel BayHad an amazing trip, the crew worked really hard for us. We managed to see some magnificent great white sharks in Mossel Bay.Written April 12, 2023
- JesiJaimes0 contributionsSharks were the only thing missing! 😕Unfortunately we didn’t see any sharks but the boat staff tried very hard to lure them in for several hours. When we finally gave up they took us on a quick ride to see the seals which was cool. They also provided good snacks and water/juice on the boat. There was also fresh coffee at the meet up location and our shuttle driver was very nice. (Note: first outing was canceled due to weather a couple days prior so we fit this in on our last day in Cape Town) Personally think they should either give a partial refund when that happens or offer a voucher to use at a different time. In addition they charged more than half for our additional 4th person to ride on the boat with us (not diving) and the boat was less than half capacity. (Her son was diving so she wanted to be there to take pictures and watch.) Lastly, they did not provide anyone to take any photos so come with camera ready! 😉Written July 28, 2022
- RalphO570 contributionsNo communication at all. This company has the worst response time for e mail. We booked a trip for Great White diving. It was cancelled the day before. Was asked if we can move it to another day. Mind you we travelled from the USA to do this. We have other plans booked I was told National Geographic has blood their boats for two weeks. We stayed in Mossel bay as it was on our way to Cape Town. I am not sure whom it is to blame. Jaman booking agency/ Trip advisor or the diving company. I could have saved myself a lot of time and traveled to another town to see sharks (probably not Great whites though ) as they are not found in other locations. Summary get your act together.Written May 3, 2022

- Happiness246228030920 contributionsGreat experienceTrip 09'11 What an awesome experience it was to see sharks up close. Starting with a nice light breakfast and safety briefing before tour. The boat ride not bumpy at all making it enjoyable. Unfortunately we did not see any great white sharks on the tour due to unforseen factors. However we sore a few bronze whaler sharks who are just humble creatures roaming around the cage and are quite big as well. The wetsuits fit nice and tight making it enjoyable in the water. Make sure to sit with the captain for a few minutes on tour to hear some facts and history. If you lucky, you get to see seals and whales on tour, enhancing the experience even more. Then end of your tour with a nice hot shower and hot meal while watching the video of the day which is available in retail after the tour. If you scared of sharks this tour will change your mindset. Book your shark tour at 81 Longstreet at the Citysightseeing travel depot or online on the shark zone website.Written November 11, 2018
- pedjsantos0 contributionsAmazing shark-watch experience!!!Hello all, We had an amazing and very worth full white shark experience!!!! Besides, on our way back to Cape Town we’ve stopped by for a Wale watching which was another memorable experience! Cheers, Pedro & MariaWritten October 4, 2018

- Whiskey_Tango_010 contributionsGreat DayThe staff was great and had an excellent sense of humour! Everything worked well, the security briefs on the boat were very thorough (compared to scuba companies) and we actually saw three different Great Whites. The visibility in the water was poor, so you could actually get better pictures from the boat than from the cage. The company made a video of the whole trip that was for sale afterwards. Very nice.Written April 29, 2018
- Russ D0 contributionsWe got Kicked Off the Boat due to Capacity for No Reason!!!!!My girlfriend and I signed up in the beginning of our trip. They physically wrote our names down on a list, we were #3&4 out of 16 people. We asked how much and they said just a deposit of 700 Rand. a week later we went in, got on the boat and then were asked to leave. We thought it was a joke, and asked why? The Captain laughed and said well someone has to go and you are sitting in front. Our flight left that afternoon so we could not reschedule and that was the same for most of the people on the boat, or they had a larger group and didn't want to separate. They were not remorseful at all, as if it happens very frequently. They did a recount and determined one more person had to go, then which one guy had to leave his friend group and not go at all, he was Not Happy. Terrible management, and no organization. The girl at the desk blamed new people, and then the owner for not giving her booking software. It's just a list of 16 people, there's no need for booking software, just don't sign up 19. Don't Use These Guys !!!Written April 25, 2018
- David D0 contributionsGreat DayI had previously booked through another company online before arriving into capetown, however they left my request pending and wouldn’t answer my calls, so when I arrived I booked this tour at the information desk of the airport. They were very helpful and confirmed my booking immediately. However as other reviews state, they are just a booking agent and you will actually dive with another company, but we didn’t mind at all. The guy I spoke with called Steve was so helpful. We had a great experience over all. We only saw a few sharks and not the big great whites as we had hoped, but that’s Mother Nature for you. The company can’t control what sharks you see on the day. It’s complete luck. I would absolutely do it again. Loved it.Written April 16, 2018

Great encounter with sharks at such close proximity. Professional staff operated safely and with expert knowledge on the species. Great viewing from the boat as up to 10 sharks around boat at Lots of bronze sharks within inches of our faces, one even crashed into the cage one point which was crazy. Would recommend.

I liked the experience and the company very much. They were always in touch prior to the trip answering all kinds of questions. The trip was nice, the crew great, videographer with a great sense of humor took videos that we got. I was pleasantly surprised by the breakfast and lunch we were offered. Well organized. The company is definitely recommended. As for experience I would like to have some more :) It was quite quick for me and not enough to enjoy to the fullest. May be will try again one day.

I went on the shark cage diving trip with Shark Zone. It was a very early start as we had to be out on the water by 7.00 when the sharks feeding time is! We left Cape Town around four in the morning and travelled to Gansbaai the shark capital of the world.
I went with my younger sister who was on hoildays visiting me, it was more a trip for her than me as she was determined to see the sharks up close before she went home to Ireland. I was quite aprehensive about the whole thing, especially the point when you have to cimb into the cage! But the diving instructor who was on board was so calming and reassuring that I got in. And what an experience it was. When the shark swam right past our cage it was a surreal experience. I would recommend the trip to anyone. Afterwards we were able to buy the DVD which had some great underwater shots of the sharks close encounters to the cage.
We had also brought our own camera, a Canon 600D on which we got some great shots. We were then picked up and dropped right outside our accomodation. After a few days when I went to get the camera to show the photos to friends I realised that the camera was missing. I was in shock and realised in my tiredness I had left my camera on the bus that had transported us back from the shark cage diving. I rang the owner Vincent to see if by any chance the camera had been found. To my utter delight and surprise Vincent told me that the driver had found my camera on the bus and had left it with him. As there was no personal information with the camera they had to wait for a call to see who it was that had owned the camera. I was amazed at how honest and decent the employees of Shark Zone are. And I just want to extend my deepest graditude to them, if I ever have visitors to Cape Town again we will certainly be going shark cage diving with Shark Zone.
Thank you so much Vincent and all the team at Shark Zone :)

I went Great White Shark cage diving in South Africa last week. It was incredible! We saw 3 good sized sharks, the biggest being about 3.5ft. I was worried that I would be too scared to get in the cage but when I actually did it it felt more like being in a nature programme than anything dangerous. Also the crew were exeptionally experienced and passionate - several of them assist on real wildlife documentaries and free dive with the beasts so I felt like I was in good hands.
Tips I would give are to take sea sickness tablets and to hire a car and go and stay on the coast the night before - these are 2 things I didn't do and wished I had!
Enjoy...

I recently visited Cape Town and only had a few days there so pre booked a Shark trip with another company. On arrival the weather was terrible and the trip was cancelled. The hotel recommended I contact Shark Zone. These guys were just great, they go from Simon's Town out to Seal Island in False Bay, this is slightly more protected from winter winds than the other areas.
The boat was brand new and was quite small taking only a max of 15 people, so much more personal service. I booked onto the morning trip which is better for viewing than the afternoons, but it dose mean a 5.30 start form Cape Town.
We saw breaches, predation on seals and also on the dummy. There were 3 other boats out but all of the had to return because the weather was quite windy none of the others could hold anchor and so those trips did not get the chance to use the cages. All of our group managed to get time in the cage and we had 3 x 3-5M sharks around the cage for at least an hour.
There were sandwiches, snacks and drinks available.
These guys obviously are passionate about what they do and made every effort to make sure that we got to see what we came for.
(I saw the negative reviews but i am not sure some of the comments are about this company because i don't think that have a big boat taking 30 people, you should check when you book. if the weather is bad then you should assess your own tolerance to being sick, its the sea - it has waves! Also be prepared in low session to not see as many as you expect, if you want a guarantee go to the aquarium.)

We booked a cage dive with Shark Zone in mid November 2012 and the overall experience was great. We drove ourselves so can't comment on the transportation. They provided a decent breakfast (certainly more food and variety than expected). We then headed out. There were 14 people on our boat and the cage fits 6 people so there were three different groups. The crew was great - very friendly and helpful. They had enough wetsuits and snorkel masks for everyone. They also allowed everyone the opportunity to go into the cage twice. Not that it's in their control, but there were seven sharks during our trip, with the largest being ~4 meters (12 feet). After the dive they even slowed the boat when they found some whales so we could all get pics. We ended the adventure with some lunch as we watched the video they made of the day. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and pleasant experience. This is the only time we've ever been shark diving so I can't compare them to other companies, but I would highly recommend Shark Zone. Everything was professional, enjoyable and better than we had expected. 5 stars!

Organising the experience: Shark zone was quick to respond, a good communicator and Stephen gave us all the details we required beforehand. This was the cheapest Shark Cage experience and we were also able to book places on short notice (I used this Easter 2016). Due to bad weather, our trip was cancelled the first time around but we managed to get another date and time quickly.
The expereince: You have to drive/organise transport to Gaansbaai, I thnk it's about 120-150km out of Cape Town.. We chose the later 'launch' at 11:00 so we would have a bit of time to drive there comfortably. We took sea-sickness tablets beforehand - they are cheap and do not have much side effects. This is a good idea as the boat sits on choppy water for 3 hours. THese are also available on site, but we had one the night before and one just before getting onto the ship.
THe orientation and safety talk before the diving was excellent, and we had a good breakfast, though many did not eat due to our upcoming trip. The equipment was in good order. THe first third of the boat time we did not see anything and thought we would go back without sightings. THe water was freezing too. THen we had tons of sharks and all got to go into the cage at least twice. It was really cool and we got to take phtos and videos ourselves from deck. SOme people brought water cameras and there was also the boat's professional photographer taking a video from deck.
We got back and had a great lunch. THe video was selling for about R150 but was a bit boring, and we had all gotten pics and videos anyways. Also, it's not as scary as people say it is..

I don't use a travel agent as I prefer to do the research and bookings on my own. Given that, you might wonder why I would use a booking agent, in this case Shark Zone, when I could have picked one dive company and booked directly with them. What happened to me was the exact reason why I chose this route.
First, it was easy to set up my tour with Stephen and his company online and with email (I'm in the USA). This was probably the single most important experience that I had planned for our two week South Africa trip. This was the moment I had been dreaming about since I was a little girl. I must have sent Shark Zone a dozen emails to ask questions. I got prompt, polite, informative answers every time. Thanks for being so patient with me!!
We arrived in Cape Town late on a Sunday night and we had our False Bay dive scheduled for Tuesday. Monday was beautiful but the weather for Tuesday looked (and was) ugly. I got a message from Stephen that our dive was cancelled but he was looking into other possibilities for us for Wednesday. Our original False Bay plan had us driving to the dock from Cape Town to Simonstown. We planned to spend the afternoon down at Cape Point so we didn't need to book transfers. False Bay was not an option for Wednesday. Stephen messaged me that he could set us up for Gansbaai on Wednesday but that is a longer drive and would require a VERY early departure. He arranged free transfers for us from our hotel at 4:40 AM. The dive was everything that I had dreamed about all my life. If I had picked one dive company and then had to reschedule due to something totally unpredictable like weather, I wonder how much precious vacation time I would have had to waste to find availability or make some other arrangements so I didn't miss out? I did nothing but sit back and let Stephen's team solve the issues and I had the time of my life. I would note, we also ended up paying less per person (not much, but still a little less) than another family on our dive (I don't know who they booked with).
Side note: I get motion sick. Given my long history of motion sickness, I used my prescription patch, Sailor's Secret ginger capsules, SeaBands, and Benadryl (works better than Dramamine) - everything that has ever worked for me. I felt fine. I have known my husband for 17 years and have never seen him motion sick so he took nothing given his lack of previous issues. He was ill; painfully ill. He wasn't the only one hanging over the side. Interestingly, it was mostly men who were ill and most said they hadn't had issues ever before just like my husband. Please, so you enjoy your trip, assume that you will have issues out there. The swells were large and when the boat was stopped, you felt that up and down. You will be out there for a few hours whether you feel good or lousy so take measures to feel good. Also, if you are a parent, assume the same for your kid. There was a miserable little kid on-board that broke my heart. Poor kid was green and I don't think he ever even looked over at the sharks (his dad was ill too).

First of all I understand the risk of interacting with wild animals as well as the possibility of the main attraction does not appear.
So, we'go!
No problems in booking and arranging the trip. Everything was made by telephone. For instance, if you want to book online, it may need at least 2 days in advance.
I choose door to door service. The minivan comes after you at any hotel in CPT. There also available to meet the crew in Gansbaai.
Prices - door t door 1,700R, driving 1,000.
The operation is well standardized. Welcome coffee (poor quality), introduction on what you should/not do, GW curiosities, among other things.
I was well prepared for everything - extra clothes, camera, glasses, soap and towel. Indeed after cold saltwater in your body, taking an after shower is not a bad idea.
Since the very beginning I was afraid of whether conditions. Light rain in the night and very windy. Cannot say if I am exaggerating or not since it is my first experience in CPT.
Stepping in the boat, everyone take your seat, backpacks inside (please waterproof to avoid problems), engine on ... To the ocean.
5 kms (3 miles) or 20 minutes later, the boat is ready for anchorage. Boat choose a place in the side of other operators.
My option was to wait for the first sight to put the diving clothes on. This point needs your attention: quality of the clothes is terrible ... Shoes for small foot, broken zippers, old masks ...
25 minutes later a small female appeared very rapidily. It was the trigger to put the clothes.
In paralel the weather got worst ... We started with 10 knots wind, by this time It was reached 15 knots.
When I went to the cage the captain cancelled the trip due to weather conditions.
My opinion is very pragmatic - why they took us to the ocean in this condition? Off course they dont return (even partially) the amount paid.
They offer other trip for free but of you have a tight schedule it doesnt work at all.
Lunch is also terrible I would give up if did not book door to door service.
Conclusions- make sure about about weather conditions. Better cancel if wind is stronger than 10 knots.
Better drive yourself. I can left behind lunch and other awful stuff.
If you drive you might be able to go to cape agulhas and hermanus to see whales.
Thats it!!!

We are planning to be in Capetown May 27-31 2022. We are thinking of trying the shark cage dive. In your opinion which time slot is best. the 7:00 am or the 10:00 am
Either would probably work for us.
