About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- K428ZNandrewt0 contributionsBraemar Landrover AdventureOur guide was very knowledgeable on the local history and environment. He explained matters in an interesting and informative way. Luckily for us, his driving skills were also excellent! There was plenty opportunities to ask questions and discuss things as well as a snack and drink stop. Our guide stopped at good locations for photos and we highly recommend this scenic small group trip.Written November 8, 2024
- tjacksonsrq0 contributionsGreat TripVery knowledgeable of the area. Interesting back country we would have not known about. Ben and Steve were great fun.Written October 22, 2024
- KiwiWanderers020 contributionsHighly recommended! We booked ourselves a Cass Valley four wheel drive experience which we thoroughly enjoyed. It was wonderful seeing a mob of thar which was a first for us, a lone bull awhile later, a glacier at the end of the valley and last but not least a couple of NZ’s native falcon, one of which fed right in front of of us having just caught a meal. Our guide and driver Paul was very informative and a great story teller, even made a great coffee to go with our afternoon complimentary chocolate. If you want to see big country and all of the above, highly recommended!Written May 22, 2024
- Rowland P0 contributionsGetting to places only a local couldThis was a nice relaxing trip, having a driver with local knowledge was very interesting and we were taken to places not accessible without a good driver, car and local permissions.Written April 24, 2024
- Adrian C0 contributionsEnjoyable Afternoon Tour with Knowledgeable GuideOur guide was Paul, who is a retired local Lake Tekapo farmer, so knows the local tracks, places and background stories inside out. He took us up the Cass River valley which was stunning with views that you would never get to see by any other means. Paul shared his knowledge of farming the area and the wildlife. During the tour we encountered two large groups of tahr (a goat like animal which usually lives high up in the mountains). At our stopping point in the valley we had a great view of Mount Hutton served with a cup of tea and some dark local chocolate. Highly recommended.Written April 24, 2024
- 275lanej0 contributionsFantastic Trip to the High CountryThanks to Tekapo Adventures for a wonderful day in the Cass River Valley. The tour wound up through the beautiful Glenmore Sheep Station in a rugged and comfortable 4WD rig expertly piloted by Ben. Making our way up the valley we traversed hills and river going higher and higher as Ben talked about the topography, geology, biology and history of the area. We end our climb in a memorable visit to the Waterfall Sheep Herders Cabin. We’ve done a lot of guided tours while in New Zealand and this was a standout! We absolutely recommend this trip!Written March 19, 2024
- Alan P0 contributionsA great tourA fantastic experience. Well done to Ben for being so informative. Great to see a large working farm and the surrounding scenery. Highly recommended.Written March 14, 2024
- habzi0 contributionsBeautiful sceneryA perfect way to see Lake Tekapo and surroundings from a different perspective. We were taken on a drive throught the merino sheep farms, river valley, we got to see beautiful views of entire Lake Tekapo. We also learned about the birds, the inhabitants of the valley. It was a very enjoyable afternoon.Written March 13, 2024
- Thomas H0 contributions4WD tour across 19,000 hectares Glenmore StationUndoubtedly, one of our highlights when we visited the South Island of New Zealand. We learned so much about the ecosystem and Merino sheep farming. The scenery was truly amazing. I can highly recommend Tekapo Adventures.Written February 18, 2024
- MBDUNLAP0 contributions4WD - no Land RoverWe enjoyed our guide - extremely personable - HOWEVER don’t plan on the advised Land Rovers. We were told both were in the shop and we were uncomfortably put in the back of a Toyota-not a pleasurable ride. Didn’t want to hold it against our guide, but sent a message to the operator who basically reply “sorry, too bad”. Also - it was advertised with “Glacier” - not one - again operator said “clouds”.Written February 1, 2024
- Leslie R0 contributionsGreat small group adventure! We had a fantastic experience as part of a small group of six touring the Cass Valley Back Country with Cristina yesterday. She was so knowledgeable and had personal connections with the owners of the private land that we were able to tour, giving us unique access to this stunning scenery. She stopped often to let us walk around, offered to take our picture and even treated us to chocolates and fresh spring water! Highly recommend!!Written January 19, 2024
- janineI6661JL0 contributionsCass Valley 4WD AdventureHi, We had a really interesting and informative afternoon with your guide who kept us attentive all the time. Apart from the amazing surrounds of the Cass Valley, it was very pleasant weather-wise which made the experience that much more enjoyable. We were with another couple and the fact that an advertised 3-hour experience actually lasted 5 hours plus was testament to your guide who clearly seemed to be enjoying the afternoon with us. Well recommended advernture. Janine & MikeWritten December 9, 2023

- LynnieCust0 contributionsSolo traveller? Email if can't bookSolo traveler, so emailed as wouldn't let me book less than 2 and they got in contact and was booked on solo no bother at all. You soon get to meet fellow travellers in the vehicle! great scenery, even though all green, be spectacular when snow on mountains but glad it was behind me by few days. Was told about the trees that were good for land and the bad ones introduced by 2 legged species'and is now a big problem with iradication programs probably on hold due to cyclone damage unfortunately. Local birds and animals pointed out if seen and also how they are trying keep control the 4 legged vermin. Would recommend it if in own car and want to do a local thing as lake it's self was packed with buses and a wedding.Written March 29, 2023
- Ruth R0 contributionsFantastic experience and excellent valueThis adventure was fantastic! Well worth the fee. Incredible scenery, interesting info about the country and birds, access to areas you'd never see on your own. Owner Ben was informative and skilled, obviously experienced and well informed. Ben gave us a great 4WD trip up the Cass Valley through a working sheep station to one of the musterer's huts, where we sampled the fresh, cool water running straight off the mountain. Ben was really knowledgeable about the area and we even managed to see the critically endangered black stilt. He gave us plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs. We thoroughly enjoyed this trip and would recommend this to anyone wanting a taste of the backcountry around Tekapo.

Seeing high country NZ close up with a down to earth guide-not slick or sanitised but good understated Kiwi professionalism. H@S a priority-seatbelts, torque on wheel nuts etc. Felt privileged to see this part of NZ. Thoroughly recommended.

Surpassed our expectations. Was our 40th wedding anniversary, so very similar haha!
Ben’s driving skills impeccable as is his eyesight- always amazes me when locals see something that I swear is not there, so I will google a picture next time.
Had beautiful mountain water and Ben was patient and answered questions he probably gets hundreds of times.
Cass Valley and farm was so interesting being a generational farm. From Mountains to braided rivers
Wasn’t rushed. If you are wavering, just go. Worth every cent and remember your camera. the ride isn’t scary or challenging if you’re a nervous nelly
Thank you

An amazing experience of nature that generally you would not have access. Ben the driver was so knowledgeable of the station and the surrounding areas including the mountains. Comfortable ride and the afternoon tea at a station hut was memorable. The biggest treat however was the viewing of lake Pukaki and the backdrop of Mt Cook. A great experience overall and worth every cent. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful treasure.

I went to both Braemar Station Backcountry and Cass Valley Backcountry tours. Professional and friendly staff with incredible knowledge in those areas. The 4WD Tours allow you to enter some rare and private lands with stunning views! It is highly recommended to take the tour if you are visiting Lake Tekapo.

This was a 4WD through Braemar, a high country farm. The drive was boring, just acres of dried brown range grass. At the end we did see Lake Pukaki, some mountain ranges peaking out through the clouds and a few deer and sheep in the hills.

I’m sorry to hear you were not satisfied with your tour. The low clouds didn’t offer the spectacular views we usually have.

An amazing experience that exceeded all our expectations. Admittedly we were blessed with a beautiful clear day that perfectly showcased the magnificent and diverse scenery. The terrain was rugged but handled perfectly by our host in her trusty 4WD. Christina seemed to relish her role and was a wealth of knowledge while also engaging in exchange of information and friendly banter with our group. Would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone seeking this type of experience.

4WD tour of the Cass Valley on Glencore Station. Only this tour has access to this private 50,000 acre ranch. Magnificent scenery of the Mackenzie basin and mountains on bumpy ranch roads and up braided river beds. Christina, co-owner of Tekapo Adventures, was an excellent guide and friendly conversationalist. She was very knowledgeable re the area’s glacial history and the workings of the ranch, which produces world class Merino wool. We climbed to a hilltop to take in a waterfall cascading from a hanging valley. If you enjoy discovering what’s at the end of a dirt road in New Zealand, take this tour.

So glad we decided to do this 4WD trip through MacKenzie country, as it gave us the opportunity to experience the beautiful scenery of this region which we couldn't have accessed on our own. We had a great time on this relaxed & enjoyable trip. Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable & you even get the opportunity to feed Larry the sheep.
