Not really fairtrade or organic, but still an interesting visit
So the website talks about "fairtrade", "organic", etc. But it turns out (from the guides information) that the tea pickers here earn minimum wages ($3 for 20kg picked in one day and if less, its reduced salary), the production here is not organic and the fairtrade tea they have are leaves/bushes they've bought from other actual fairtrade farms. A lot of this is probably common practices and common knowledge, I just found it interesting how the expectations did not meet reality about a fairtrade/organic as it seems like the website is trying to convey. The stars in this review comes from the guides well informed and interesting conversations and that it was actually fun to experience the tea picking ourselves.

      Excellent tour
Excellent tour of the factory and tea plantation- amazing to learn the time and processes that go into making a cup of tea. The guides were very friendly and made the tour fun and interesting.

An amazing insight into tea production. Loved it.
The building was incredible; hardly changed from the 1940's. The tour was conducted by a lovely man who had worked in tea all his life. So knowledgeable. We were able to follow the whole passage of the manufacture from the freshly picked leaves to the final product. We then had a great tea tasting and could purchase the varieties that we liked (at great prices). A fab trip

      Plantation Tour at Tea Factory.
Went to Halpewatte Tour. Chose the plantation tour and was extremely interesting as had no knowledge of same. Spoken to by extremely informative SALLAY who spoke about the tea leaves and how to identify best. The shown how woman collected tea. Then given opportunity to pick tea - harder than you think. Overall very good tour.

We did the plantation tour, and it is really low efford. The tasting was very fast and just four small sips of tea. After the tasting we went to the tea plantation and after 5 minutes of short explanation we went to pluck tea for 15-20 minutes. Thats it. For 10 dollars and all the good reviews we just expected a better tour.

Really great tour…especially if you like tea!!!
My guide Lahiru was very informative about tea and I definitely learnt a lot from him. You can tell he takes pride in what he does. He was very friendly and helpful l. I had a great time with Maria picking tea leaves, she is amazing at what she does. This is definitely worth a visit if you are in Ella. Maria needs to get good tips!!! I tried to find Lahiru and Maria after to tip them but I couldn’t find them. I didn’t want to give money to anyone else in case it didn’t get to them but I wish I had tipped them earlier. Great tour!!!

Such a fun and interesting experience!
Salem explained us everything about the leafs, how they are colected and sold and then we went to the fields with the tradicional baskets to colect the leafs ourselves. Had a great time

      Not worth it
This tour involves almost nothing, you basically pay $10 to stand in the tea field and pick some leaves. Ripoff, should just be included in the factory tour instead of charging double

      The true tea harvesting experience
TLDR version 1. 10$ per person for tea plantation tour. 2. Lesson about how tea is planted. 3. Picking up tea leaves by yourself while wearing the traditional basket. 4. Taste the 4 types of teas available and understand the difference. Included in the tour. 5. Enjoy sky lounge with amazing view. 6. Buy tea if you want. We were lucky when we arrived at the tea plant that the tour was just starting, we paid for our tickets and joined the other people. The guide, Mohamed Sallay was such a wonderful person, he’s a local living just buy the factory and explained the whole process of growing and harvesting tea in such detail and excitement that you can feel his passion for his Job. After his explanation our wonderful guide introduced us to Pushparanie, a local lady working as a harvester in the farm. She helped us in wearing the traditional baskets and guided us into the farm where we started our competition to see who can collect the largest number of tea leaves. It was amazing seeing her work and it was such a unique experience being there and getting guidance from these two wonderful people. All in all we had a blast and would recommend this to our friends and family.

      Not worth it
Sallay was lovely and informative but the actual plucking experience was not good at all. The lady didn’t help us nor speak a word of English. We wondered around the estate clueless on how to pick anything. We got some nice photos but could’ve done that elsewhere for free. Not worth it. The tea factory tour however is excellent and very informative. You can definitely skip the plantation.

      Very disappointing
Very superficial. We spent a few minutes plucking plants with a lady but the actual guide provided very little info and was very speedy throughout the experience. Whenever we asked something about the processing he said we should do the factory tour… but quite honestly for 10 usd I would have expected way more! Otherwise the staff at the shop was really nice… a pity.

We asked our accommodation about a tea tour (when in Sri Lanka..) and this is the one we ended up at. It was around 5 AUD for a tour of the facility to go through the whole process of making tea. It was actually surprising how little we knew. The tour guide was highly knowledgeable and spoke well, only got a bit hard as some of the tour was near some very loud equipment. Worth mentioning it's a full on factory with moving parts and all and based on some of the behaviours of the people in our group I'm surprised noone lost a hand, but if you use your brain a bit you'll be good. You get to taste 4 sample cups of tea, and that concludes the tour then you can purchase a whole range of stuff, they aren't pushy but you can buy most stuff in town a little cheaper.

We visited mid-morning when all areas of the factory were working. Our experienced and knowledgable guide, Sallay, explained every step of the tea-making process very clearly and talked about how different types of tea are graded. He clearly has a great passion for his subject so we now know a lot more and he may yet convert me from coffee to tea! The tour lasts about an hour and it flies by. It’s only a short tuk tuk ride from Ella and we’ll worth a visit. Thanks to Sallay and the rest of the team.

Went on two tea factory tours during our holiday and this one was by far the best as you get a tour of a factory in full operation in fact you get to walk right next to the machinery and see it all in action.

The guide provided lots of detail on the tea process and the tea tasting at the end of the tour was really interesting and there was no hard sell in the cafe and shop. Would highly recommend.

I gave this tour five stars for three reasons: first, most importantly is the guide ( Mr. S. Sivanathan) he know how to share his knowledge in a theatrical yet technical manner infusing the engineering and chemistry in tea making machine detail with anecdotal story lines. I am grateful to his devotion to share the miracle of tea making with the young generation. My grandson, age 7, from California was very interested and intrigued right through the 60 minute tour. Second, the views. Third, the tea tasting lesson at the end to understand why and how the process creates the award winning tea! I highly recommend this tour, tea tasting and tea factory experience for any curious and interested. Traveller.

We had a great day at the Factory. We started with the Tea Plantation tour and got to pick our own tea leaves the taste the tea. The guides were knowledgeable and explained lots.

We then did the Factory Tour. It's good to note that it's only a working factory a Monday - Friday so when we visited it was not in operation however our guide Siva was so knowledable, explained so much and we got to see some of the machines in action. It also meant we could take photos too.

Tea tastings were delicious and really reasonably priced in a beautiful setting!

Fantastic tour at the tea factory.

Siva was our guide and I’ve never met anybody so passionate about tea, and he really helped to make the experience so great.

From a really in-depth lesson about tea and how it’s made, to a fantastic tour of the factory in the middle of their work... it was a great experience and would highly recommend to anybody visiting Ella.

We visited the factory in the afternoon, after production had finished for the day. We decided to go ahead with the explanatory tour, which we did not regret.

Siwa, our guide, gave a very interesting tour and was incredibly knowledgeable after many years working in the tea industry. He walked us through each stage of the tea production process and was able to answer every question we had.

The tour took around 40 minutes in total and cost $3 per person which we found to be very reasonable.

We took the tea factory tour with our very knowledgable and impressive guide. It lasted around an hour including a lecture first, a guided tour around the factory itself and then we got to taste the different teas they make in the factory. Very interesting and educational.

What time is best to go?
Our guide recommended Tuesday mornings at 8 am as the best time for the tour, with a lot of production. There is no picking of leaves on sundays, so the factory is not producing tea on mondays, but the tour is still running and it is possible to see all the parts of the process - just not the leaves themselves.
