- 1In Māori culture we hold two important aspects dear to us. the first being Manaakitanga (Hospitality) and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land) .At WanaHaka® we want you to connect with these 2 important cultural elements. This Pōwhiri can be done in either Queenstown or Wanaka so please do email first as to your preferred location if required. You will be greeted by a Wero/Challenge with a Māori Warrior and Taiaha, from here we move through the key elements of the pōwhiri/welcome where we may start as strangers but by the end we end up as whanaua/family. A truely inspiring cultural experience that combines both the people and the land of Wanaka and Queenstown.

- willcB7491VQ0 contributionsFantastic Wine TourA truly incredible experience. Joe is a great tour guide - his humour, relationship with the vineyards, and overall friendly and relaxed nature made for a very lovely day. He took the time to learn everyone’s name and engage with them in conversation. The wine tours were great however the highlight was Joe sharing his knowledge of Māori culture with us. Would definitely recommend this experience.Written September 7, 2024
- Sunshine153909472330 contributionsFun day out!We had a lovely day out experiencing the local wineries and local culture. Joe was very informative and we learnt so much about the history of the area. Thanks!Written May 21, 2024
- lmnyclax0 contributionsGreat experienceWas fortunate enough that our tour was just us so it provided for more time to get to know our guide Joe and really learn a lot about the area. The wineries we visited were excellent and tastings were generous. Joe does an excellent job and makes for a great day out. Highly recommend.Written May 12, 2024
- tunglingy0 contributionsWould recommend to anyone coming to the region :)My friend and I were the only 2 people on the tour that day and it was indeed a great express experience of Maori culture and the local wineries! Joe was passionate and funny, always cracking a joke or two along the way, and shared a lot about local history and culture as well as insight into the 2 wineries we went to (Aitken's Folly and Rippon). The staff/owners we met at the wineries were nice and explained the different wines / the region well too. Would love to try the longer wine tour if there's a next time as Joe told us that he would drive out to further regions for more varieties of wine experiences! Would recommend to anyone coming to the region :)Written May 8, 2024
- evauny0 contributionsBest wine tour with Maori culture in the region!Joe is an exceptional guide who is warm and genuine, and has managed to blend the perfect amount of Maori history with wine tasting. My partner and I immediately felt comfortable with him from the start and his popularity is plainly evident in all 3 of the wineries we were brought to (and were given special treatment on account of Joe). We had a great time learning about Maori culture on this very personal tour that included a traditional welcome greeting and creating our own pepehas while sipping wine and eating cheese. Joe was also happy to answer any questions we had and we couldn't recommend him more for a chance to learn more about NZ's history accompanied by good wine. All the best to you, Joe!Written April 28, 2024

- KenB2230 contributionsReal Local Wine and Maori History and Culture!Everything on this tour was sensational! Great local knowledge, fantastic Maori culture, amazing knowledge of the area and a real Maori Experience! So passionate and welcoming yet very humble and sharing. You can see why he is an asset to the tourist industry in the area and it really made us feel like locals. All of the wineries he chose were local family owned so this also supported the local economy. I thought I knew my wines but Joe knew how they were made, the differences between the grapes, and how the locals make their products stand out. A beautiful part of the country shared with us by a real Local!Written April 3, 2024
- C1647UPamberb0 contributionsUnforgettable Experience!Joe is incredible! Not only did we learn about Māori history and culture, but he also is very knowledgeable about the wine and vineyards in the region. My husband, mother in law and I thoroughly enjoyed Joe’s company. He is one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met, and he gave us an unforgettable experience during our first time in NZ. Thank you Joe!Written April 3, 2024

- Straw210 contributionsA Must Do in WanakaThe tour was amazing and should definitely be on everyone's itenerary when they visit Wanaka. - DoreenH20160 contributionsExcellent experience!Superb wine tour with Joe as our host. The warm Māori greeting was charming and he was filled with knowledge of the culture. When we arrived at each of the three wineries, it was apparent that the wineries knew him well and I felt like we received special treatment because we were with him. The charcuterie board he ordered for us at the second winery was so delicious. I highly recommend this tour.Written March 1, 2024

What guests experience through Joe's Wanahaka tour makes them feel like they have not just been to NZ, but are now apart of NZ. Joe's does a very powerful and moving Haka also. Thank you Joe, for sharing so much with us!

Thank you for our welcome to N.Z Joe, this has set such a beautiful tone for our trip this week. Both the children and adults came away with a deeper appreciation of your culture and are already wearing the carvings you bestowed upon them. We highly recommend this experience for anyone traveling to this magical part of the world.

Couldn't recommend more highly. Joe taught us about the history of Maori culture throughout New Zealand and locally in Wanaka and also performed 2 different Haka, breaking down each element detailing it's significance. We also learned several Maori words and Joe sent a PDF with everything we learned which was an amazing bonus. Excellent value for money and well worth taking part in.

Outstanding morning with Joe. The welcome was phenomenal and so atmospheric in situ. He brought so much knowledge to life in his explanations and answered all questions we had regarding Māori culture. He was fantastic with our baby who wasn’t afraid to interrupt him (!) - sorry. But took her in his stride and included her within his explanations. Absolutely five stars and more to have an immersive experience on the history of New Zealand.

If you want to learn more about Maori culture and have an authentic experience this is a must do. The performance was fantastic and a personal highlight of my trip to New Zealand. Joe is also a genuine and great guy and his demonstration and explanation of the Wero, Whakatau and Haka dance was just really cool. Also learned a lot about Maori history, culture and connection to the land. Highly recommended!

I recently planned a school snow tour from Queensland to Queenstown for 40 students and 4 staff and we were absolutely blessed to be given an introduction to Maori culture, language and Haka by Joe. I cannot speak highly enough of this incredible man. Joe took the time to guide my students through traditional welcomes, language, connection to land and stories as well as performing and breaking down several Hakas. If you are looking for an engaging, 100% authentic, 100% genuine, cultural experience for your students, Joe at WanaHaka is your guy.
Thanks Joe, we will see you in 2024!

Joe’s whanau performance next to Lake Wanaka was an unexpected pleasant surprise. Joe explained the various stages connecting us to the wisdom of Maori tradition. My most important takeaway was “mana” ~ prestige, spirit of person. I will practice mana in 2020. Happy New Year.

The welcome experience is so powerful and moving, my husband and I continued to discuss it afterward. Learnt a lot about Maori culture and history of South island. Joe's demonstration and explanation of the wero, hongi and haka were so fascinating. Learning how the haka is actually unifying a diverse population is amazing. The one hour got over too fast and we were left wanting more. If you want to learn about Maori culture, this is a must do. Joe is extremely humourous and you will love every minute of this enthralling experience. Wish I had time to do the wine tour as well :)
