- ChristineWh0 contributionsAn Excellent UpgradeI was the only one booked for the Ruby Island Cruise, so I was offered an upgrade for the Stevenson Island Cruise and walk 3-5 pm. The man who arranged it for me was very helpful and the Cruise was excellent.Written February 1, 2025

- udaykE69VE0 contributionsAmazing lake views! This was a great guided tour! The hike up wasn’t super difficult but you might need to go slower than the rest of the group if you’re having some trouble. You won’t get lost though since there’s really only one track to follow. The lake was absolutely gorgeous. We even saw a few wekas! Definitely recommend doing this tour!Written January 25, 2025
- Julien T0 contributionsHiking up to the lookoutThe half day trip was very good. The location was very scenic so it was a great choice. We had beautiful weather and all in all it was enjoyable.Written January 6, 2025
- BDB19770 contributionsWanaka CruiseWe did this last week. Nice cruise and walk. We did Guided tour. I don’t think it’s worth to spend extra money for it. It’s one track goes up and same comes down. Otherwise worth to visit.Written January 1, 2025
- Mansi B0 contributionsA hidden gem with exceptional local knowledgeWhat started as a self-guided tour turned into an unforgettable adventure, thanks to our remarkable boat captain, Toby. His extensive knowledge of the area was so impressive that we immediately upgraded to a guided experience – easily the best decision of our trip! Despite the rainy morning, the views were absolutely breathtaking. Toby's expertise transformed what we could have seen as just another scenic boat ride into a fascinating journey through time and nature. His deep understanding of the lakes' formation and the islands' history brought every detail to life through enriching conversations and incredible facts. The highlight was discovering the mind-bending natural phenomenon of an island on a lake on an island on a lake! This unique geographical feature alone makes Mou Waho a must-visit destination, but it's the passionate and knowledgeable guidance that truly elevates the experience. The cruise strikes a perfect balance between educational content and natural appreciation. Even in less-than-perfect weather, the experience was magical – perhaps even enhanced by the mystical atmosphere the rain created around the islands. Pro tip: If you're considering the self-guided option, do yourself a favor and upgrade to the guided tour if Toby is available. His insights and stories add immeasurable value to the experience. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, history buff, or simply seeking a unique New Zealand adventure, this cruise and nature walk delivers on all fronts. It's an experience that will stay with you long after you've returned to shore.Written December 27, 2024
- toddsC2530VM0 contributionsWorth a visitGreat guide and nice fast trip over the lake to the island. Has amazing 360 degree views from the top so awesome for photos. It was hoping to see one of the 200 odd Weka birds but no luck.Written December 21, 2024

- martincS2512NK0 contributionsPleasant way to spend a restful hourGreat catamaran. Perfect scenery. Inexpensive for a one hour cruise Friendly owner/captain who did his best with the commentary but there is little of interest to say. We saw pretty much zero wildlife. Pleasant way to spend a restful hourWritten November 12, 2024
- familytravel4x40 contributionsHappy hour like no other! We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise, and we doubt there is a better happy hour to be found any where in Wanaka. The backdrop is awesome and the cruise goes by far too fast, albeit it could be that the alcohol helps! As for the cheese and biscuits don’t expect anything out of the ordinary - it’s functional and plentiful, but not a gourmet event, but with drinks at $6 each (after the initial freebie) we had no complaints! It’s basically a nice cruise with a drink on the poop deck thrown in!! Enjoy….Written November 5, 2024
- Overseas_Aussie0 contributionsNot much to write home aboutJust a cruise, one drink and a little cheese in a confined space. Views I can see from the shore line so nothing to write home about except wasting my moneyWritten November 3, 2024

- 930gerardk0 contributionsFantastic Views and a Nice WalkAfter a memorable (if bumpy!) boat ride, we had a memorable guided tour, occasionally stopping for looks at the wildlife (including insects). Views were amazing, as was the wind! Not for those who get seasick.Written September 3, 2024
- balajir2300 contributionsBooked different and got this oneI originally booked for Stevensons but they canceled it last hour as they didn’t have minimum required numbers to run the cruise. They moved me to the happy hour cruise. I took the option because it was my last day in Wanaka. This was a good cruise but I am sad that I couldn’t do what I preferred.Written August 28, 2024

Booked online, then the next day hopped on the boat, looking forward to a peaceful cruise on Lake Wanaka.
The weather was perfect, sun, blue skies, water reflecting the sky, great visibility.
It’s a fairly small catamaran, think there were a max of 18 of us and we all found a place to sit and enjoy the rays and tranquillity.
After 45 mins we alighted at Stevensons Island, and followed the guide up to the top of the hill. It’s a pretty easy 15 min walk, gentle slope up, with only a couple of rocky/steepish parts that I needed a stable husband to support me with. Lovely view from the top, so worth the short hike.
There’s a loo onboard and on the return trip we were served a cuppa and biscuits. Perfect.
A lovely two hour excursion which l would highly recommend.

We booked this tour about an hour ahead of time and really enjoyed it. We had an afternoon that was semi-sunny and the water was pretty calm, but not glassy. There were 11 passengers in total. The boat ride was nice. We sat inside part of the time as enjoyed chatting with the captain. The nature walk was nice and the guide gave an interesting talk about nature and the area while we were at the top of the short hike. We fully enjoyed this activity after spending several hours hiking in the morning. There were people of all ages on the boat and it seemed like everybody was having a nice time.

This is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. The couple who run the boat are very friendly and helpful. A slow cruise up the lake takes you to Stephenson Island which has a small beach and an optional 15 min stroll to a low peak for further views and a bit of information on local habitat.
Tea and coffee are included but I recommend a glass of wine or a beer as the prices are very reasonable. Sitting on the aft deck with a drink is great way to motor back to Wanaka beach.

We did the Stevenson Island Cruise and nature walk which took around 2 hours and cost $79. You can buy tickets in the tourist shop across the road.
Departure was from town end (Ardmore St) of Lake Wanaka.
We travelled in a lovely Catarmaran with two friendly male staff including the skipper. There were many comfortable seats and the bar had alcoholic drinks for a reason able $5.
The walk to the lookout point at Stevensons Island didnt take long and wasnt a difficultr walk but it was uphill arriving and downhill departing.
Its a worthwhile cruise to do in Wanaka.

We have chosen to rely on Lake Wanaka Tours because it is a local company that offers the possibility of combining the cruise on the lake with a walk on one of the islands. We did the Stevenson Island tour, which provided just enough cruising time and a lovely short walk up the hill to get great views of the lake and mountains. Great cruise for all ages!

This was a relaxing cruise on a fine day with calm water and great views. There was just the right amount of passengers to make it convivial without overcrowding. The guide Bronnie was very friendly and knowledgeable and put a lot of effort into making people comfortable. There are also great views from the top of the island, but the walk can take a while if your mobility is limited. So if that’s you, it might be better to relax with a cuppa and a cookie on the beach instead.

What a great way to spend a couple of hours exploring the outer region of beautiful Lake Wanaka. The catamaran made for smooth cruising despite the string wind and the short walk on Stevenson Island with the skipper was informative and long enough. The crew, Adam and Pavla were very friendly and would highly recommend this trip if you want to see the beauty of the Lake Wanaka.

Well!!! What a way to enjoy a few hours relaxtion. Did a lake cruise with my wife, an aunt and uncle and one of my cousins. We all enjoyed this cruise. Skipper Tim pilots the boat and Bronie provides a great commentary. Then Bronie takes you up to the top of the island for more great views and photo opportunities. Then back on board for a drink and biscuit with the return sailing back to Wanaka. A really professionally and friendly run cruise. A big thanks to Tim for upgrading us from the one hour cruise.

A wonderfully relaxing cruise on a beautiful ship. The guide was a little too fast for my liking (it was hard for some of the group memembers to keep up with him), but he was very knowledgeable on the flora and fauna of the island. There were even tea and busicuits on the way back to Wanaka. On the whole, a very enjoyable way to discover more about the lake and its islands.

My husband and I booked this cruise in the hopes of having a peaceful trip onto the lake as well as some time in nature. This cruise ticked all the boxes. There ended up being only about 14-16 of us on the cruise, and we were the only people there on Stevensons Island which is fairly rare I'm told. There were some on the cruise who couldn't make the walk to the top of the island, so they hung out in the shaded area on the beach. When the walk was over, we all cooled our feet in the water. It was a lovely, lovely trip and we highly recommend it.
