- Is it safe?
- Yes. You’ll be provided with safety instruction from our experienced guides who’ve spent hundreds of hours getting to know our resident school of sharks. Our guides will be in the water with you the entire time and will closely monitor the sharks behaviour to ensure your safety.
- What type of sharks will I see?
- There are two main species of sharks encountered, White Tip Reef Sharks and Black Tip Reef Sharks, both are common in the tropical warm waters of the South Pacific. Each species can grow to a length of just over 1.5 metres although under the water they appear 25% larger, a snorkeling face mask optical illusion. White Tips are the dominant species and are by nature an inquisitive shark not frightened to check you out. Their Black Tip relatives are by contrast timid and will shy away if they feel threatened.
- How many sharks will I see?
- Numbers vary but it is common to see up to six sharks.
- How deep is the water?
- Both Black Tip and White Tip Reef Sharks prefer shallower waters making snorkeling easy with good visibility. It’s even possible to see the sharks from our boat before entering the water. Water depth varies between 4 - 6 metres depending on the tide.
- What if I’m not a good swimmer, haven’t snorkeled before or don’t want to snorkel but my travelling companion does?
- Buoyancy aids are available for less confident swimmers and because these sharks prefer shallow waters there’s no necessity to dive under the water to secure a thrilling view. Non-snorkelers can join the day but sit out the snorkeling experience.
- Our Shark Guarantee
- As Sharks are wild animals we cannot guarantee sightings however we have a 95% +success rate of sighting sharks. In the event that you don’t see any sharks we are happy for you to return for a complimentary “Ultimate Encounter - Snorkel with Sharks” within 3 days of your original cruise.
- If poor weather and sea conditions result in the cancellation of the 'Snorkeling with Sharks experience,' a substitute snorkeling safari will be provided.
- Please bring swimsuit, towel, protective clothing from the sun including a hat and sunblock, light jacket or sweater during the cooler months, money or credit card for optional purchases, your camera and sense of fun!

- richardrT5608GY0 contributionsA horrible experience.I told the agent on-line we wanted to go on February 15, 2025. I booked it on January 19, 2025. The agent scheduled us to go to Fiji South Sea Island on that same day ( January 19, 2025)!!! What the heck?!!! When we got to the harbor on February 15th we were advised a "No show charge" was added to my credit card!!! We had to pay again to go on the trip. We were shocked to say the least and are requesting a Refund!Written February 17, 2025
- AshokM7260 contributionsA day well spentToday (Saturday, 08/02/2025), we went on a full day tour of the South Sea Island 🏝. Whereas the Pacific ocean 🌊 around Denarau/ Nadi, where we are staying, is not clean & clear ( not even blue), near South Sea Island, the water is clean and clear (but the turquoise seduction of Maldives was missing). South sea island is a tiny island, 45 minutes away from Denarau port by a Cruise, which has been developed as a beautiful tourist spot with all the facilities. The island is so small that you can make a complete round of it in 15-20 minutes. It has no jetty & tourists are taken from the Cruise to the island by motor driven boats (picture 2). Our tour package included a lunch (which was sumptuous) & unlimited beverages (tea/ coffee, beer, soft drinks & water). I once again tried to go for Scuba diving but the Trainer & Instructor, Stuart, refused to entertain me because of my age & blood pressure (I had to fill a health declaration). He asked me to bring a doctor's fitness certificate knowing well that there was no hospital on the Island! (Same thing had happened in Elephanta beach at Havelock island in Andaman).😞 Snorkelling was free but we have had enough of it in Maldives 🇲🇻 and Havelock (Andaman), so we avoided it. There was a subsea view ride also with a good view of the Coral 🪸 reef but very little sea life. It made us recall the terrific submarine ride at Maldives that had taken us 120' below sea level for a great view of under sea life. In short, Fiji 🇫🇯 is no patch on Maldives.Written February 14, 2025
- Nicola W0 contributionsNot what I expectedThe journey was easy, it was very cool in the captain's lounge. On arrival it was a bit chaotic trying to secure seating in the shade and listen to a briefing both at the same time. Lunch was called before we'd even got chance to go in the water which added to the chaos. The food was good though. The snorkelling trip to the reef was great but around the island was not at all good. Very disappointing. Perhaps there were good spots (and I did ask for guidance) but we never found them. There were only 2 snorkelling trips but we were over it all by the time the second one was called....! I would advise securing a seat on the opposite side of the island to where the boat moors, as there was zero breeze otherwise, and it was unbearably hot. The beach was hot and totally broken coral, no nice sand, so wear swim shoes. One final grouch ( and I normally don't grouch) - the staff did not seem the usual friendly bunch one gets all over Fiji. If you got an enthusiastic Bula out of them you were lucky. Even the guys on the snorkelling boat were a bit over it all I reckon. This was low-season. It would be even worse in high season!!! We left early, we'd had enough!!Written February 12, 2025

- Rdnkh0 contributionsPoor customer serviceI have used the south seas ferry to Yasawa resorts many times and never been motivated to review until today because after much 5 star service the behaviour of two destroyed all my goodwill. I am not sure but suspect south seas dominant position has led to complacency creep. Collecting baggage on return to Denarau had my bus pointed out. Took bags to bus and a very disinterested (I assume driver) appeared sort of pointed at my bags and said yes yes get on board. I asked if he wanted me to load my bags not that I have EVER had to do that on a tourist bus before but if it was expected so be it. He just ambled off saying get on the bus. I flatly refused to get on the bus and just leave bags unattended. After at most a minute other passengers appeared as did yet another South Seas employee who told us we had to load our bags - I was somewhat incredulous but ok until he did ABSOLUTELY nothing to help but yell at us for not pushing bags into the bus far enough. I turned round and said I will push my bags in as far as I can but I am NOT climbing in the luggage compartment to sort suitcases. We then were informed it would be another 30 minutes before we left which left the choice of sitting in a cold bus (air con requested to be turned off driver said no) or standing outside where it was warmer but also pouring with rain. A few passengers got off requested their bags and took taxis to their hotels.Written January 27, 2025

We did the full day and booked out tickets through viator. 2xA 2x kids 6,3yrs We had the most amazing time plenty of room on the beach for everyone and the bbq lunch was fantastic! The unlimited drinks was great as it’s very hot so you want to stay hydrated at all times, we did a snorkeling trip also included and went out and saw some reef sharks and lots of fish and coral. We had such an unforgettable amazing day out with the kids! Would definitely do that again.Written January 23, 2025
- U3342GNjulies0 contributionsFantastic day outFantastic day on castaway. Merewai was our host and took us onto the island where she showed us around with lots of information. We then snorkelled and swam and enjoyed the island hospitality. We met Merewai again before re boarding the boat and she told us lots of things about Fiji and the islands. Felt like we had our own private host. Would highly recommend. What a great day and lovely host and people.Written January 20, 2025

The whole process from arriving on the island, to instructions and information, friendliness and great BBQ lunch!! We loved it! A smaller boat takes you to the Beach from the large air conditioned boat but it’s only a few minutes and a lovely way to arrive. The BBQ lunch was delicious and free drinks all day! Very relaxing- would highly recommend for families and couplesWritten January 19, 2025

We had a calm and scenic boat ride out to Castaway Island via a couple of other islands to drop off visitors. Our guide Merewai was fantastic - friendly, funny, knowledgeable, helpful and attentive. She made our day most enjoyable. Castaway Island Resort was very nice - the staff are lovely, the facilities are great, food was really nice and plentiful, the beach is beautiful and it was a great place to relax.Written January 8, 2025
- Safari377864025160 contributionsDisappointing customer service. Nil feedback. No text, message or phone call.Very disappointing - I booked this tour several weeks ago and was informed pickup would be from our hotel - The Outrigger. To check this I tried to get in tourch with South Sea Cruises. No replies. Outcome was a very professional agent at Outrigger informed us "No pick up from here - this is a half day cruise - pick up is for full day cruises only". If I had known this I would have had time to arrange suitable travel. Due to lack of response I had no other option but to cancel a trip we were really looking forward to. This was to be part of a special 75th birthday celebration for my girlfriend and me. I was more gutted with missing out than having paid the company for the trip.Written January 6, 2025
- G2642IYaf0 contributionsDO NOT RECOMMENDWe had a very disappointing experience with South Sea Cruises during our planned trip to Malamala Beach Club. On the day of our booking, the weather was terrible—pouring rain with no sign of improvement. Anyone familiar with Fiji knows how unpredictable monsoonal weather can be, and with a 19-month-old baby, it simply didn’t make sense to transfer to an island for half a day under such conditions. There’s minimal shelter, and we would have been stuck outside the Club restaurant in the rain, which is not ideal for families with young children. We held off making a final decision until the last hour, hoping the weather might clear up, but it didn’t. The rain was torrential, not just a light drizzle. Their website explicitly states the tour operates only in good weather, and this clearly wasn’t good weather. Despite this, when we tried to cancel due to the circumstances, South Sea Cruises insisted they couldn’t refund or cancel our trip, citing their terms and conditions. This left us feeling frustrated and disheartened. We invested a significant amount of money into our Fiji holiday, but this experience soured the entire trip. As a family with two young children, it was entirely unsuitable to proceed, but it seemed our situation didn’t matter to the company. Had we been adults alone, we might have gone ahead, but our children’s well-being took priority. This experience left us feeling like nothing more than a dollar figure, despite Fiji’s reputation for its family-friendly culture and love for children. Unfortunately, I now regret booking with South Sea Cruises and would not recommend them to others. This lack of understanding and flexibility was disappointing, and we won’t be returning.Written January 4, 2025

a 90-odd minute ride on a big boat (a bit choppy on the way back) to a beautiful resort island. Nice hosts, food was 7/10.
they take you on small boats about 20 minutes out to a reef where white tipped and black tipped sharks frequent. the sharks seem habituated to people and there is a shark attractor scent used. but it is an awesome experience snorkeling with about a dozen sharks cruising around. felt very safe. beautiful experience.

This was an incredible experience. The tour was well organised. We were picked up on time and check in at the port was easy.
The best part of the tour was the snorkelling experience. We took a boat out to reef. We saw so many sharks and the experience was amazing. We had a long time on the water too. I've been on snorkelling safaris where you get 20 minutes in the water but on this tour we had enough time in the water to fully appreciate the experience.
The staff were fantastic. I did this trip with my 5 year old daughter and the staff were so caring and really looked out for her.
Kuata Island is also stunning...such a beautiful part of the world.

My partner and I went for a day trip on Fri 7 March. While we did get to see a number of sharks and tick that bucket list item off, I think there's a few things folks should know before going on this trip...
- This isn't snorkeling like you'd do at a shallow reef or calm water near a beach. You're taken in a tiny boat out to 30mins from the shore to water that's both deep as hell and really choppy in bad weather.
- I've snorkeled 5 times in various locations on holidays and snorkeled most weekends from living in Australia for 10 years. I've never snorkeled in water so rough. Even confident swimmers kept their lifevests on (when staff were encouraging folks to discard them if they were "good enough swimmers"). 4 of our party were back in the boat within 5-10mins. If you're not a very confident swimmer think twice about this trip unless it's a clear day with no breeze. And if you go, keep your lifevest on!
- Once the snorkeling is done you're taken back to a backpacker/hostel style resort to wait it out for hours until the main ferry comes back. The swimming pool can best be described as a pond, and the resort is exceptionally basic. Not somewhere I'd choose to spend the day if I had a choice. Bear in mind that once you've snorkeled for 25-30mins (not the 45mins you're told), the rest of the day is 2hrs on a ferry to the resort, 2hrs to get back, and the apart from the snorkel, you're stuck on a basic resort with nothing to do.
If seeing sharks is a must-do for you, then yup, go for it and knock yourself out. But if you're thinking this is the best thing to do in Fiji - that couldn't be further from the truth!

Bula Vinaka thescottishkiwi38,
Thank you for sharing your feedback on your recent trip with us.
We appreciate your honest insights and are sorry to hear that some aspects of the experiences did not meet your expectations. We strive to give the best experience possible, and we do understand some factors such as weather which can affect activities on the day - though out of our control.
Snorkelling experiences we offer is not like others in a shallow reef or near a beach. You are taken in a boat out to 30mins from the shore into the sea to enjoy the underworld as Reef Shark Snorkel takes place at a shallow reef, with the option to be above the corals in the shallow water or spend time in a section of deeper water. The snorkelling site is bordered by a natural reef bay. Although there are many places where the water is shallow enough to stand up, we do not advise standing on the reef as it can lead to cuts and bruises and protecting our reefs by leaving them untouched. In addition, there are buoyancy devices in the water to help you rest from treading water, and a life jacket is optional.
By doing this activity, you get the opportunity to observe the reef sharks in their natural habitat. We're happy to hear that you still managed to see the sharks with us and tick your bucket list!
The boat ride out to the reef takes 15 minutes. Safety is our number one priority, hence we stress on life jackets if you are not confident and our captains can choose to drive slower if ocean conditions require it. We take many first-time snorkelers and non-swimmers on our trip daily and our staff are there to assist you at every stage of the trip.
Unfortunately, the weather can be unexpected in Fiji. If conditions would appear unsafe, we would not conduct the trip as your safety is paramount to us. We are sorry if you felt your snorkel trip was too short.
We encourage our guests to use our snorkelling equipment to snorkel in our front reef, go for a walk in one of our hikes, or relax on our beautiful beach, and enjoy the unique island scenery.
We’re glad you got to tick the shark encounter off your bucket list and appreciate your perspective.
Should you ever return to Fiji, we’d love the opportunity to provide an experience that better aligns with your expectations.
Vinaka Vakalevu!

Unless you are a small shark fanatic, this trip is long and boring. We were collected at 8am and returned to the hotel at 6.30pm. Apart from the hour with small sharks, you spend the rest of the time on the passenger ferry and the island base. The people on the island are really nice and welcoming but There’s nothing to do but try and find some shade. You’d have more fun staying at your Denerau resort. On the ferry home you get to pick up all the drunks off the beach-club islands. Quite entertaining but not really a family show if you’ve got kids.

In all honesty, this wasn't a bad day out. We did snorkel and we did see a few sharks, as promised. But my issue was that there was so much downtime, especially for the price that they charge. The boat ride out and back was fairly comfortable on the large inter-island ferries. We got to Barefoot Kuata island, got our snorkel gear, hopped on the smaller snorkel boats, and were out and back within an hour in time for lunch. And then... NOTHING. There was literally NOTHING to do for the next 2-3 hours besides wait for our return boat back to Denarau. And the island, itself, doesn't offer a whole lot to explore. So it's basically just a really expensive snorkeling excursion with little else. And if you've snorkeled elsewhere in the world, this one isn't going to wow you. It's just average. I understand that the ferries operate on a schedule and that we can't return sooner even if we wanted to. For the price, they should offer other things to do after lunch while we wait for the return ferry.

It was really good, I felt safe. The sharks were so close. They were down deep but the crew bought them up. Tim was very good and experienced. Some people might find it hard to get in and out of the boat but the crew looked after you.
I found it really relaxing. You just jump in the water and chilled. The sharks just came up to you

Our family loved this day. Swimming with the sharks was a very special experience. The resort experience at Kuata was authentic and friendly with a delicious lunch. There was plenty of time after the shark encounter to make use of the resort facilities. A special thanks to Sala for taking the time to show us around. A very special day everyone will remember for a long time to come!

An amazing experience. I had only 2 days in Fiji and wanted to do something special, this was definitely very special experience. Everything well organized and fun, I loved snorkeling and saw like 5-6 sharks. Definitely must try

The highlight of our trip to Fiji. A lot of negative reviews here almost put us off going - but very glad we didn't. The boat ride out and back was amazing - very scenic. The island itself was very beautiful - great snorkeling, paddle boarding and great food with plenty of vegan options. And the sharks ... wow. Amazing. We saw thirteen, up very close. Felt very safe though, even though my fiancee can't swim (she used a life jacket, as several others were). Overall, would HIGHLY recommend.

Is it possible to do the activity if we are staying on Nadi Island, if so, do you require any diving certification? Can GoPro be used for swimming?
Written July 20, 2023
You don't need any diving experience it is a snorkel expedition but be aware it is in mid ocean not in a bay I am sure you could get a transfer to Denarau to join this tour we stayed at Denarau Island where the boat left from You can take a GoPro to take photos

Hi,
We stay at Hilton Fiji Beach Resort.
Will you pick up and drop off at my hotel?
If not, at what time do we need to get to where, and what is the best way to do so.
Many thanks,
G
