The train ride itself was great and views were awesome! We had a very informative young man that gave us so much information in the outside rail car which was a bonus! FYI when you make reservations ask NOT to be seated near restroom or door to outside train car. We didn't know this and it really made our inside train car experience not very enjoyable as people were constantly in and out of bathroom and going in and out of our railcar.

      Worth the trip
Had a great trip. The staff told stories and history for the entire 4 hour trip. Beautiful scenery, great history . The riding car is very comfortable with full service bar. The observation car is a fun and provides great 360 views

It was my wife’s first train ride. She had a great time. We had a nice time together. We will be back.
The twilight ride was very relaxing. The employees were fantastic and enthusiastic about their jobs. Service on the train was great. Scenery was great and my wife and I enjoyed taking lots of video and pictures.

      Great for couples!
“The third most scenic railroad”. They didn’t say if that was third most scenic in the world, in the US, or just in AZ, but it was certainly scenic. A geologic layer cake of sandstone & limestone, a cliff dwelling, a lush river valley, and both extant and abandoned homesteads. Incredible stargazing once the sun set! 3.5 hours for a 40 mile round trip. We did the evening wine tasting ride. Would only do the wine tasting again if it were the evening for Arizona wineries. Overall, a great way to spend an evening together.

      Great day with friends
Celebrating my sister’s 60th birthday. There were 10 of us. We started the afternoon with lunch - no one complained- large servings. Then wine tastings. So far, all staff on point. Something for everyone- nice selection. Received the souvenir glass. Boarded the train. Met by shea. She was awesome. Very attentive to everyone on the Tucson car. She shared stories, engaged travelers and seemed to enjoy her job. Super comfortable seating. Roomy enough for our party of 10 to switch up seats and visit. Scenery was impressive and our outside guide ( so sorry I forgot his name). Was well informed on the area and sites along the way. He seamlessly answered our questions. All and all, a great day had by all.

      Fun Adventure for Couples
What a fun experience! My husband booked us on the evening "wine train" in mid-May, and not only was the weather perfection, the entire evening was splendid. Tim, our history guide on the outside car was knowledgeable and funny while pointing out places of interest and unusual rock formations. Nate, our bartender and inside car guide was great, also. The train ride took about 4 hours and what a relaxing ride it was. My husband and I opted in for the dinner upgrade (which you pick up before boarding the train) and the snack tray on the train. The dinner (I had the chicken salad, husband had the turkey sandwich) was a large serving size and very fresh. The limited menu items (burger, sandwich, chicken straps, salad, wrap) are all made as you order, so you are able to customize your selection. Make sure to bring a jacket if traveling in the evening; the outside car gets chilly but the views of the stars unmarred by city lights is magical.

      Fun and Beautiful Journey
Renting the caboose is the way to go but book in advance … way in advance. What a fun way to spend time with friends and celebrate a special occasion. The Verde Canyon Railroad team, Dawn, Jessica, Pearl and Hayden were amazing! And what a beautiful journey. We loved every minute of it.

So glad we rode this. Outstanding Day
First, Branden really made the experience top notch. His commentary was fun, informative and not overpowering. He is VERY knowledgeable about the local area and was a real pleasure to have leading our car. The views are spectacular!!! The facility is wonderful. And of course the train ride is outstanding. Nice leisurely ride through the canyons. We were in the Jerome Car with a large group. Branden was on top of things the entire ride. Came outside with us to help and show us the sights. Get there early and just relax and enjoy the nice patio seating. There is food if you are hungry. there is also food and drinks on the train. Our only disappointment was the positioning of the engines before we started. The train was so long, the front of the train was beyond the walkway so we could not get photos of the engines Thanks Branden!

      Used to be better
I have ridden on the Verde Canyon Railroad multiple times since it first began and always enjoyed the trip. This time however, the personal touch just isn't there. You have to listen to an overly loud automated narrative that is not remotely synced to the scenery. By the time the narrative would point out a sight we were too far past it to see. In the past the bartenders and car attendants would point things out, but now they don't. The bartender did say we would be entering the tunnel in 5 minutes, but it was actually about 30 seconds away. He was depending on the recording, which was way behind. Our car was mid train. The outdoor attendant did his best but could barely be heard and had not learned how to pronounce the names of things correctly. He had only been there for a month. In fact I only saw one employee who I recognized from previous trips and she was great. Shout out to Liz for answering my questions and hearing my concerns. Please bring back the interaction and not be dependent on a recorded narrative. Also, I tried to order a prickly pear margaritas only to be told they were out of prickly pear.

      Fantastic experience’
We had a great time on the Verde Canyon railroad - there was plenty of food (lunch prior and a charcuterie box on board) and all of the staff were superb. We would recommend getting up and outside straight away after the toast and finding a spot on the right hand side of the outdoors car for the best views. Only complaint is that the music on board needs to be turned down (or off) so we can hear what the brilliant guides are saying, as they were often drowned out. Would highly recommend to all.

      Great Train
Great train ride. The ride was 3hr. Long. You get a good lunch, and a chessboard with a champagne toast. They also have a full bar on board. The train has comfortable seats, there are sofas, and tables too. There are outdoor cars for anyone who wants to sit outside. The canyon is beautiful.

So disappointed in this specific Christmas venue. Waste of time and money. This 30 minute ride to a few decorated playhouses and “wild animals” was not worth the trip. I saw better decorations in surrounding neighborhoods!

      Beautiful ride!
Our experience was through a tour with HGV so our meal & drinks were included. We were in luxury cars with table or sofa seating. Our bartenders Jacob & Shannon were on top of their service! We enjoyed the entertainment too!

      Think twice before you ride
I was the train enthusiast who pushed our group to take this tour. My thoughts: Pros - Jerome car was nice - cushy seats - snack box was nice - don’t eat too much lunch - scenery was beautiful (the first time - see below) Cons - Biggest thing that cause a 3 rating - narration sucked. We were promised music over the many speakers in the car (got nothing). I asked the guy who was going to give info if his info would be piped in over the speakers said he “no” and he would run into the cars on important things (he was usually out on the open car trying to shout over the trains noise). He came in maybe once but the bartender pointed out a few things. I see from other reviews there is a produced narration on tape but not our trip. Looks like even it is not timed to point out things before the come. - Oh yes, if there are just two of you, get the two seats, not the side with four seats. The view on the 2 seat side is much much better. A lot of rock walls on the 4-seat side. You will not get the good view on the return trip because the train does not turn around. They stop, move the engines from the front to the back to pull cars back to station. This could have been a much better experience but was the low point in our 9 day trip to the Grand Canyon area.

As a "fun" group of 15 adults, we booked a "first class" reservation and were delighted with the accommodations on our comfortable car! The food was very fresh and plentiful. The friendly personnel, especially Dewey, our tour guide along the route through the red rocks, were personable and did a great job narrating points of interest along the route. We liked the flexibility of staying inside to visit our friends and indulge in the food & beverages or going to the open car to enjoy Dewey and the sights in the fresh air. Only minus was the 2-hour advance arrival that we call considered unnecessary. An hour ahead would be plenty of time.

Be prepared to hurry up and wait. The train supposedly was to leave at 12:30 pm and they want you there at 12:00 pm. They board passengers around 12:30 pm and you wait on the train another 30 - 40 mins. before departure. They will tell you the ride is 4 hours when in fact it is 3.5 or 3.25 hrs. The ride was comfortable in standard class and the windows are large for viewing from the inside. You also have the option of going outside to an open car but it was rather cold so be prepared to have a warm coat, hat and gloves. Especially if you have children. The inside cars do have a restroom and offer snacks, beverages and conversation.

While we throughly enjoyed the train ride, the scenery, and all that we learned, this adventure needs some work to make it 5 stars.

To start off, the train station needs to be expanded. There are way too many people trying to get inside in too small of a space. It was complete chaos and unorganized trying to get our physical tickets for the ride.

We were also told incorrectly that seats are assigned at the time purchase. This is incorrect, because if this were true you would be able to pick the seats that you want. It is purely first come, first serve and they seat you as you get on the train. We bought first class eats, and I was reassured by the lady at the ticket counter that I could get a 2 seater table as I get horribly motion sick especially when riding backwards and I need to see where I am going. I was going to ride froward going out, and then switch seats with my husband for the ride back so that I was always facing forward. These seats are also by the windows with the most horizon visible thus allowing me to see out and calm my motion sickness. Well, This information just wasn't true. My husband and I were the last ones on our train, and we were placed on a couch facing backwards as those were the only seats left. We sunk into the couches and they were way too deep. I approached the server on the train and told her what I was told and she apologized and said that was not true and its first come first serve. So I was miserable as soon as we started moving. As soon as we were able, I went outside to the observation area and ended up standing out there the whole time as I couldn't sit in my seat and not be sick.

The food they serve is also meager and nearly enough for the number of people on board. By the time I finally stopped feeling sick from the motion and went to grab some snacks, the food was all gone.

The scenery made up for a lot of the grievances. Dewey was our "tour guide" (for lack of a better word) and he was very well informed and took great pride in showing us rock formations and telling us the history of the area. We also had an eagle come on board with its handlers which was super neat to see.

After we arrived at the end of the line, they switched the engines around and Dewey talked to us about the history of the area while they did that. We also had ice cream sandwiches. The ride back was also very nice and I got to see some areas that I missed the first time around.

We stayed outside on the deck the entire train ride except for the very beginning. Felt like a waste of a first class ticket since we weren't able to see anything from our seats anyway, even if I wasn't motion sick. If I ever do this again I will opt for the regular ticket and just say outside the whole time like I did this time. It was also way more overcrowded that I was expecting for a Sunday in February.

If you can’t hike into the canyon this is a way to sit back and relax to enjoy the ride. I’m only giving this a 3 because there is a lot the company can do to improve the experience. We traveled there on February 11th and the temperature at that elevation was very cold.

I’m guessing the instructions to get there early is to encourage buying lunch at the small lunch counter and to shop in the equally small gift shop. There is no inside seating. There are two areas to sit outside. During cold temperatures they have heat lamps but you have to find someone to turn them. Staffing there are nice people but there are not enough of them.

The ticket counter shares the same space so it can get crowded because you are competing for space with browsers and lunch lines. Plus people were cold and wanted to stay inside where it was warm. I can imagine the same situation during the hotter months when people want air conditioning.

The Museum is a train car with some artifacts. Nothing special and not note worthy.

We bought first class tickets. When you board your train car your host seats you to assigned seating based upon your party size. If you are a party of two that means you might not get a comfortable couch seat. It’s either a couch sitting across from another party or two chairs facing each other by another window. The right side window seats with the chairs offer a better view for the river and the windows were cleaned. The couch side windows were not cleaned. There is an assigned out door car with seats so that you can get better pictures. The food served in first class were chicken wings, sparse fruit and sparse vegetables and dip. Bottled water was plentiful. Cocktails will cost an average of $13.00 and beer $6.00. There is only 1 host so pack your patience.

The recorded tour somehow does not match the timing of the scenery so we disregarded it. There is one restroom for each car, right by the food stand. If you are traveling in a wheel chair they do have a lift to get you in a car. The restrooms are not handicap accessible and the movement of the train could be challenging.

It was a pleasant trip but I would not take it more than once.

Highly recommend this train ride. It takes about four hours. We booked trip for four thru the Tavern Hotel in Cottonwood, where we stayed the preceding night (also highly recommended). You need to be at the train depot around noon. They have a cafe (long line) so pick up some food beforehand. Lots of picnic tables. Board train (designated car) at 12:45. Train departs at 1:00. Nice comfortable seating. Each person receives a snack of cheese, crackers, salami, grapes and a chocolate brownie. Each car has a bar and an attendant. She serves champagne or sparkling apple juice for a toast at start. At first, scenery is blah. But when you enter the canyon, you are transported to a different time and world. We loved the open air car for viewing the river and steep canyon walls. Only negative was the sound system in our car was not working and we could not hear the taped presentation. We were in the Scottsdale car. Other cars didn’t have that issue. Our attendant, Stacy, tried to point out interesting landmarks but she had to yell to do so. She tried hard to take care of her guests. The train travels 19 miles through the canyon (and tunnel!) then back the same way. Our 9 year old grandson got restless on way back. Overall, this is a good adventure for adults and children.

There is no need to arrive 2 hours before departure. The cafe consists of a fast food order counter with no place to sit there or in the gift shop. There is a patio with tables but we were there in late February , outside temp about 50. It would take about 5 minutes to look over the displays. The last hour of the outbound trip is in pretty red rock country as is the first hour of the return trip. Other wise you will see scrub brush and bare trees at this time of the year. There was supposed to be an audio narrative about the various marker posts but it was not working. (You can buy a printed guide for another $3.) Our first class seating was very comfortable and the chicken wings and other snacks were very tasty. The outdoor viewing platform cars were nice but it was too cold at this time of the year. Expensive drinks are also available. Simply overpriced for almost $100 each

If you have an afternoon then visit the Verde Canyon Railroad Ride through majestic Sedona rails! When we arrived protocol was in place where they took our temperatures and everyone was wearing masks which made us feel a little safer during these times. When we reserved our tickets we also ordered lunch which you could bring on board or eat on one of their patios. I would suggest to eat at the bigger patio rather than the one just outside of the gift shop. We both had the Grilled Cheese with Swiss, tomato and bacon, it was very good and served in a box for safety. We bought the first class tickets and glad we did. The interior of the train car was a wild west theme and super super comfortable with large couches with table, or chairs and tables. Casey attended to us that day and was super sweet, funny, professional and gracious! High Fives to Casey!!! The views from the train car were amazing as it kept changing, we could even go outside to the next car to be outside to get the full range of views. The ride itself was approx. 4 hours and well worth it, I would do it again in a heartbeat. It would be fun to the the train in the later hours when the wildlife is out. So, again, if you have an afternoon I would highly recommend this trip, it was super fun, super educational and the views were amazing!

Outstanding way to relax for an afternoon. Venue is "top notch" from the parking to the depot to the nicely appointed trains. Don't recommend ordering food if your ticket price includes the "free" snack tray. Bottled water was provided immediately. Cash bar was available throughout the 3 1/2 hour journey. I liked the combination of an inside car and the outside car from which views were better. The canyon is very beautiful and a must see. Sit back and relax, no need to get on and off the train during the ride. Staff are top notch folks who enjoy what they do. Masks were not required - ride on the outside car to reduce potential exposure. Inside car was very well ventilated. Restroom on the car was clean and readily accessible.

Those first class seats are worth the extra charge They are only $10 above a regular seat, and each passenger enjoys a tray of treats, including fruit, cheeses, meats, and brownies. Our attentive server/hostess also filled in for the lagging narrative that explains the sights as the train rolls down the tracks. And to top it off, during our return to the station she came through with ice cream sandwiches for $1.

Thank you for joining us James and we are glad that you enjoyed the experience. Those ice cream sandwiches certainly are a welcome treat when we get ready to leave Perkinsville.

Waaay too long. Although the post says 3 hr 30 min, you are supposed to get there at 12:00 for the 1:00 departure and then we didn't return until 4:50. If there was a lot to see, that would be great.... there is not. AND if you are on the Left side with the couches, there really is nothing to see. If on the couches side, which twice as many people are given it is 2 seats at a table on the right and 4 on the couches on the left, you have the mountains a couple yards from the window 75% of the time. If you thought, as I did, that it wasn't really an issue because we would have the side with the view on the way back, wrong again. The engine is moved to the front vs a turn around of the train so you get the poor view both directions! It is a long time to not see much. Yes, they have outdoor cars so hope it is a nice day to take advantage of that. Although you will be standing because if you sit, people come and stand right in front of you. Not the train's fault for that of course. I do drink alcohol but was a bit offended how much the car server was pushing alcohol- “you can get off the train, if you don’t want to drink” “we are here to party” and comments like that. It was rather aggressive. Recommendations to the operators: 1) let people book seats at the table for 2 and charge more for those seats which are without any question the better seats. Implied then to charge less for the couches, not only for the poor view but also if you are a party of 2 but you may also be stuck staring at 2 other people you really don’t like. Could be fun with some combinations and not so much other times. 2) increase the speed of the train to make the trip quicker. There are a couple spots where there are sights and still can reduce speed there and go faster for much of the rest. 3) Ask the car servers to be less aggressive in alcohol sales. Let everyone know what is available and have them make the decision instead of constantly shouting out about it.
