Early November was the perfect time to see the fall foliage in the Verde River Valley via the historic Verde Canyon Railroad (VCRR). This is a 40 mile, 3 1/2 hour trip in comfortable coaches. While there is a no-host bar in the car, there are also substantial complementary appetizers and water. We had bought sandwiches at the train station prior to departure, but they really weren't necessary. The coaches are adjoined to open viewing cars for fresh air and better views. The weather was a perfect 74 degrees with lots of sunshine. The history of the area is narrated during the trip (along with every railroad associated song you have ever heard! There was approximately a dozen cars, all full, so be sure to make reservations well in advance. The trip fare is about $100 per person, but well worth the trip for a great afternoon's entertainment.
Best views are on the right (station-side) of the cars.

Outstanding way to relax for an afternoon. Venue is "top notch" from the parking to the depot to the nicely appointed trains. Don't recommend ordering food if your ticket price includes the "free" snack tray. Bottled water was provided immediately. Cash bar was available throughout the 3 1/2 hour journey. I liked the combination of an inside car and the outside car from which views were better. The canyon is very beautiful and a must see. Sit back and relax, no need to get on and off the train during the ride. Staff are top notch folks who enjoy what they do. Masks were not required - ride on the outside car to reduce potential exposure. Inside car was very well ventilated. Restroom on the car was clean and readily accessible.

This was a highlight of our trip to the Southwest! Three couples took the train trip. It was well organized, the train car was spotless and the spacing of passengers was perfect. Our attendant/bar tender, Giselle, was outstanding! We were able to relax and enjoy the entire ride. The outdoor car adjacent to our passenger car, gave us an option to be outside and enjoy the views, as did the air-conditioned car with its big windows. Included in our ticket price was a champagne toast, train themed music, a charcuterie tray that was filling and delicious, narration and bar service from Giselle and a totally relaxed afternoon. The scenery was lovely. We enjoyed it all!

Waaay too long. Although the post says 3 hr 30 min, you are supposed to get there at 12:00 for the 1:00 departure and then we didn't return until 4:50. If there was a lot to see, that would be great.... there is not. AND if you are on the Left side with the couches, there really is nothing to see. If on the couches side, which twice as many people are given it is 2 seats at a table on the right and 4 on the couches on the left, you have the mountains a couple yards from the window 75% of the time. If you thought, as I did, that it wasn't really an issue because we would have the side with the view on the way back, wrong again. The engine is moved to the front vs a turn around of the train so you get the poor view both directions! It is a long time to not see much. Yes, they have outdoor cars so hope it is a nice day to take advantage of that. Although you will be standing because if you sit, people come and stand right in front of you. Not the train's fault for that of course. I do drink alcohol but was a bit offended how much the car server was pushing alcohol- “you can get off the train, if you don’t want to drink” “we are here to party” and comments like that. It was rather aggressive. Recommendations to the operators: 1) let people book seats at the table for 2 and charge more for those seats which are without any question the better seats. Implied then to charge less for the couches, not only for the poor view but also if you are a party of 2 but you may also be stuck staring at 2 other people you really don’t like. Could be fun with some combinations and not so much other times. 2) increase the speed of the train to make the trip quicker. There are a couple spots where there are sights and still can reduce speed there and go faster for much of the rest. 3) Ask the car servers to be less aggressive in alcohol sales. Let everyone know what is available and have them make the decision instead of constantly shouting out about it.

This is a very touristy activity. They tell you to arrive 1 hour before departure which is to accommodate the buses and large groups, but also to spend some time in their gift shop. We specifically asked for the 2 seats with table on right side of train. We booked several days in advance and the lady who issued our tickets when asked if we had the 2 seats on the right assured us it was! She lied to us once on the train our seats were with two strangers on left side. Once on the train our car was the Yuma and our attendant was Nicky. She began yelling at the top of her voice about the toast and selling alcohol she really pushed the alcoholic beverages. We decided immediately after leaving the station to sit outside on the open air car which you share with another car so two cars empty on to one open air car. If you sit you will have people standing in front of you the entire 4 hours. This activity is not for everyone. If you enjoy drinking, loud people, and looking at rock formations you will enjoy this activity.

On our website we clearly state that there is no guarantee of seating, and that you could share your space with other passengers. Overall we find that people make friends and share the communal experience of seeing this untouched canyon.

This adventure was perfect for a day that was chilly with some rain in the forecast so that we didn't want to hike. We were seated on the comfy couch with a couple that we did not know. However, we enjoyed getting to know them and sharing traveling tips along the way. I was a little concerned after reading some of the negative comments but felt they were unfounded after we thoroughly enjoyed the ride. The charcuterie snack was substantial and tasty, we didn't feel cheated because we were on the couch instead of at a table top and we didn't feel as though the booze was being pushed on us. There was a guide outside on the open air car that would come in and give us a heads up when we were nearing a point of interest so that we could decide if we wanted to go outside to view it. Since it was pretty chilly, we appreciated this notice so that we didn't have to be outside for long periods. And yes, you look at the very same landscape on the way back, but I could look at it for days and not tire of it!

When I registered online, they were trying to convince me to preorder some food packages that they offered. I didn't order any food because I knew they provided a snack, which turned out to be quite filling. Those that did preorder the food were picking up bags in the depot and most were eating them outside at picnic tables before even getting on the train. Others who brought theirs on the train didn't end up eating their included snack. So I would say, eat a big breakfast, forego their lunch offerings and then enjoy the snack tray.

As a side note, we knocked around Jerome in the morning and also toured the Tuzigoot Monument before heading to the depot. Enjoyed both. They tell you to be at the depot an hour early, but that is not necessary. Afterwards we stopped and ate dinner at Nic's in Old Towne Cottonwood... had a great meal.

Don't let the negative Nellies dissuade you from taking this adventure. Go with a positive attitude and it will be a nice adventure.

Highly recommend this train ride. It takes about four hours. We booked trip for four thru the Tavern Hotel in Cottonwood, where we stayed the preceding night (also highly recommended). You need to be at the train depot around noon. They have a cafe (long line) so pick up some food beforehand. Lots of picnic tables. Board train (designated car) at 12:45. Train departs at 1:00. Nice comfortable seating. Each person receives a snack of cheese, crackers, salami, grapes and a chocolate brownie. Each car has a bar and an attendant. She serves champagne or sparkling apple juice for a toast at start. At first, scenery is blah. But when you enter the canyon, you are transported to a different time and world. We loved the open air car for viewing the river and steep canyon walls. Only negative was the sound system in our car was not working and we could not hear the taped presentation. We were in the Scottsdale car. Other cars didn’t have that issue. Our attendant, Stacy, tried to point out interesting landmarks but she had to yell to do so. She tried hard to take care of her guests. The train travels 19 miles through the canyon (and tunnel!) then back the same way. Our 9 year old grandson got restless on way back. Overall, this is a good adventure for adults and children.

Easy drive over from Sedona via Old Town Cottonwood to Clarkdale Train Depot. Plenty of parking, nice Cafe while waiting for All Aboard 1 pm train. Preassigned seating. We were seated inside Luxury AC car with comfortsble seats like a couch.

Nick inside bartender had laid out nice snack box and poured Champagne for a Toast. After train got going we went outside to covered open air car. Nice cooling breeze .

Shelley was the Guide. She is great, lots of Information. She moved around to various groups to make sure all of us were able to hear. She is very knowledgeable and passenger focused stressing safety and preventing dehydration.

We loved our train tour. Our next door neighbors coming to in a next month. We will Highly Recommend the tour.

Great PG rated Family tour.

My wife enjoyed this very much. We chose first class, so my review is of first class only; we do suggest first class, but the train ride goes the same places for all classes, so that is the reader's decision. On first class, you get to sit in nice chairs and have a table for 2 in an air-conditioned coach with other people. If you are a larger group, they seat you on nice couches and you have a table arranged between two facing couches. They provided for each of us a bottle of water and a covered plastic tray with deli meats and cheeses, crackers, brownie bites, and grapes. I did not eat lunch before the trip, my wife had a wrap from the railroad cafe which she liked (the snack box is not intended to be your lunch). I found the items in the snack box to satisfy my appetite and my wife did not eat all of her snacks on the trip. They have beverages for purchase on the train.

We found the scenery on the trip to be very interesting. The coaches are arranged so that there is an open air observation car between two coaches and the passengers may go out onto that car for better viewing. Some stayed out for a long time, others moved between the coach and the observation car at various times during the trip. An employee of the railroad is in each coach to answer questions and to act as a host/hostess and on the observation car to answer questions.

We were there mid-week and the train was full. We talked with people who were on a waiting list that were successful in getting on the train on short notice.

I like trains and I liked the trip, so did my wife. Nice slow ride, nice scenery, nice people, nothing hokey like a "train robbery" or bad jokes. Railroad themed music at an appropriate level during 'quiet' parts of the trip. We have been on a number of tour trains; this one is one of the better ones.

If you book this train, go to Clarkdale early and look around especially the copper museum.

WOW! We so appreciate it when a customer takes time to share their experience but yours has just made our day, our week, our month and our year! We truly love what we do and respect that we are located in such an awesome place. Our staff will hear about this in our weekly meeting and, rest assured, there will be grins from ear to ear. Thank you so much.

We decided to spend our wedding anniversary on the Verde Canyon Railroad Rhythm on the Rails, 1st class. Please save your money. The brochure made it sound like there was live music playing throughout the 4 hrs., in reality a different person with a guitar passed through our car and played for about 10 minutes or so each hour, for all but 1 performance the speakers didn't work. And don't buy food, we ordered a light supper and found out they hand you a box and a cup for a self serve soda as soon as you check in, then you are directed to get on board. Once seated we could open our meals, neither one of us got what we had ordered (online several weeks before the event). Cocktails are very overpriced and not so tasty. The outdoor car was nice though, there was even a super moon that night. Longest 4 hrs of our lives!! All this for a simple $150 pp. Highlight of the whole weekend was the Park Hotel in Clarkdale - would highly recommend a stay there.
