About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- CatMan4010 contributionsGood selection of stops and interesting details but the app needs some work. The tour included dozens of places which was nice. It does need some work though as it sometimes does not recognize that you've moved on from a stop but the app wants to talk through a 5 minute description. Since we started driving before it was done we wound up missing a turn. Great concept but the app just needs to be polished a bit more.Written October 13, 2024
- ilmonstro7480 contributionsGreat tourVery interesting and informative. The technology works well once you get the hang of it. The narrator points out many interesting facets of Newport.Written October 4, 2024
- Y449ZCroberth0 contributionsFun in Newport with K9 companionExcellent audio tour. Made our trip to Newport RI with our dog so easy and enjoyable. Will definitely do more such tours.Written September 24, 2024
- Dreamer519294178050 contributionsInteresting info, difficult to use app & mapThe map doesn’t synch to the GPS on my rental car, so it was difficult. The audio was interesting. The map didn’t always lead us in the right path. I guess I found it difficult to use.Written September 20, 2024
- Diane S0 contributionsGreat overview for first timers. We really liked this driving tour. We did miss a turn once or twice but picked it back up relatively quickly. I definitely recommend doing this on your first day to get your bearings. Well worth it.Written September 7, 2024
- viciouslysh0 contributionsThe only way to really understand the sitesWe really enjoyed this self guided tour! Once we figured out set up, it was a breeze. So much information was available. It worked just as described. Picked up on our turns and easily. I would definitely do a guided tour from here again.Written August 27, 2024

- lindasay0 contributionsGood intro to our first Newport visitWe enjoyed the tour. It was a little cumbersome to start, but went fairly smoothly overall. We felt it gave us a good overview of the area in addition to interesting commentary about specific locations. We liked the ability to stop and start on our own schedule & enjoyed the presentation. We enjoyed the drive around the island, but the pauses in commentary might have included more about the history of Newport & RI. Why is it named "Rhode"? Who were the early founders? What was the experience of native Americans, jews, and black people in the early days? Before the big mansions were built what were the important industries?Written August 19, 2024
- G3877ZSelizabethk0 contributionsGreat way to tour the Newport Gilded Age mansions areaTried my first ever car audio tour through Viator for the Newport RI gilded age "cottages." I really enjoyed the narration that shared history and interesting stories not only about the properties, but other notable properties and areas as well. The ease of stopping the audio to walk around a property or tour a mansion was great. I did have some issues with connectivity in one of two places when the audio seemed to skip sections, however overall I really enjoyed it.Written June 18, 2024

- everr23790 contributionsA tour at your own pace.By using this app, we were able to personalize our tour by going where we wanted, at our own pace, and in the privacy of our own vehicle. The history narration was entertaining and informative. This was an overall pleasant experience that I highly recommend, especially to those of us who don’t enjoy crowds. My only negative about this app is that I didn’t find it sooner. This would have been perfect on my last trip to CA.Written April 24, 2024
- agspas0 contributionsAudio tour of NewportWe enjoyed the audio tour. It was an excellent way of educating ourselves and learning about the history and area. The audio quality was great and the map interactivity worked well once we figured out the GPS interactivity with the Car Play . A bit quirky at first. Important to go to the first location to start the tour.Written April 4, 2024

- audreym7610 contributionsGreat starter tour for exploring a new placeThis was our first time trying a self guided tour. It really covered a lot of area in Newport, RI. There was a good mix of short explanations of spots and then longer ones when we were able to park for a bit. This is a great starter for getting to know a new place but also covers so much in a limited time span. We loved it!Written March 27, 2024

It gave a few highlights as to properties and mansions. There could have been a lot more info given about the initial development of the area, the immigrants who developed the area, the many mansions along the walk. There was too much time in which vital information could have been shared

I have put a lot of additional information in each stoppage's “Learn More” section. Please check it out from home. In any case, I will happily exchange the tour with any of my other 100 tours in the US. Please let me know. This tour is yours for a lifetime. You can use it for pictures, a second review at home, sharing with friends, and for your next trip here.

The Ap was easy to use and worked great! Lots of great information and you could go at your own pace. We were exhausted and since it rained we didn’t finish (it’s 3 1/2 miles of walking and you can either go back the 3 1/2 miles or walk the main road for an hour. We Ubered back) We came back the next day and listened to the end.

This was my first time loading a self-guided walking tour and it worked. I purchased just before going on the trip, loaded the app and used my code to upload the tour on my Samsung S10+. We walked from downtown pier to number 1 and leisurely completed the tour and walked back to downtown pier. It was even updated with a detour for maintenance. We noticed a washroom near 40 Steps 1/4 the way from the start. The tour should also note any washrooms and water stations. Pay attention to the warnings of a few rocky areas, but the walk is mostly on flat surface. Many vivid memories.

We were in Newport with NCL for a half a day but did not buy any of their excursions. We took a free hop on hop off trolley and downloaded this audio guided walking tour. We were able to put in our earbuds and take our time and listen as we went. It's nice that the app recognized our location and played automatically. This was important for safety, as some of the walkway is rough and you want to watch where you are stepping and not looking at your phone. Take a water bottle if you are doing the entire tour and sunscreen if it's a sunny day! Great history lesson, especially when we had never visited Rhode Island before. I look forward to more tours in other cities and locations.

Thank you, Mary, for sharing your experience on the Newport Cliff Walk Audio Tour! I'm glad to hear that the automatic play feature added a layer of convenience and safety during your walk. Your feedback and tips for future visitors, like bringing water and sunscreen, are invaluable. I'm delighted you found the history insightful, especially since it was your first time in Rhode Island. As you continue your adventures in other destinations, my Action+ Tour Bundle offers over 100 self-guided tours to enhance your exploration. Safe travels and I hope you enjoy many more immersive journeys with my audio tours!

Once you get the two apps loaded then search for the email, put in the code in the right app and finally download, it gives a decent narration. However it’s so cumbersome to get it, we only had it on one phone despite buying two tickets. IMO- not worth the $30 and immense hassle.

Sensei, it's unfortunate that you found the setup process hard. We do our best to make it easy by sending detailed instructions and even providing a tutorial video to help you get started. As for buying two tickets for the walking tour, we recommend purchasing one per person since the environment can be noisy and crowded, making it difficult to listen to the guide. With individual headphones, you can enjoy the tour at your own pace without missing a thing.

This was definitely worth downloading to enhance the cliff walk. It made it more interesting to hear the stories behind the mansions as you were passing. There were some glitches where it would keep repeating, especially if you had to pause it in between the mansions on the walk. The walk itself was fairly easy but there is a point where you have to walk off huge rocks to get to the other side. It was nice to be able to park easily at Easton speech. Overall it was a positive experience and I would recommend it.

Have done the cliff walk at least once every time I visit Newport, since I came as a teenager with my parents and now when I bring my teenagers with me. It is a wonderful time to walk and talk, look at the beautiful flowers, the mansions, the view of the breaking waves below the cliffs, and only use your device to take pics (and maybe download the stories of the mansions of you want from the scan codes along the way). Enter from the top of Memorial Blvd and you can get off at various places, or turn around and walk back. We always walk through the tunnel pst the Chinese Tea House and then turn around.

I downloaded this tour before leaving my home, just to make sure there were no issues. You can drive to any location in the tour, park and walk. But I chose to start at the beginning on Easton Beach, and walked up to the Tea Pavilion (approx. 1.5 m). It was amazing fun.
I listened to some audio again and again, and got a good sense of the past Newport life.

Great way of seeing the Newport mansions and cliff walk at your own pace. Make sure you download in advance. You need to download the app and the guide, but then it’s easy and all GPS enabled. No need for data and it’s great to do the walk, see such beautiful sights and stop and start whenever you want. Highly recommended.

We did two of these audio tours on a recent trip to Colorado -- we did the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the Mesa Verde National Park. We loved them. Really provided some perspective and helped us figure out what was a must see and a must do, as well as providing interesting information.

Where is start? how many miles from start to finish? is there transport back to start point? Is there parking at start point?
Written May 26, 2022
Pleased to e-meet you, Marina.
Your interest in our tour is much appreciated! Starting at Easton's Beach, the tour travels to Rough Point. In total, this self-guided tour is 3 miles long. If you want to park, you can do so at Easton's Beach, although there may be a parking fee involved. There is, of course, transportation available from the rough point to the starting place if you need it, so long as you arrive there beforehand.

Is the cliff walk wheelchair accessible?
Written June 16, 2021
Half of the Cliff Walk is wheelchair accessible, featuring a fairly well-paved road. About halfway down, a bit after you pass the Breakers, the path turns rocky and inaccessible.
The nice thing about the self-guided tour is that you can still listen to the stops manually as well — so even if there are parts that a wheelchair can’t get to, at least the audio/stories can still be heard!

There will be three of us. How will each of us download the app if only one of us makes the reservation? Do we all have to do the reservation?
Written May 10, 2021
Do all three of you want the app on your phones to listen individually? In that case, pick 3 under number of travelers. If you want to share and listen together, pick 1. The Cliff Walk can be somewhat loud (crashing waves & occasional crowds) so each person having the tour on their own phones to listen is a good idea.
