After cycling for 3 days we thought we would use some different muscles and go kayaking. After completing the requisite paperwork, we were off. Following a short drive to the lake, we donned our gear (spray skirt and life vest) and we were off. There were only 2 kayaks in our group and the lake was smooth as glass when we got started, making for a very tranquil excursion. The good weather was a bonus. After kayaking ~2.5 km we arrived at the shoreline to begin our hike. The hike was not strenuous but there were some tricky parts due to the damp forest floor. The trip was finished by kayaking back to the drop off point. Annie was our guide and she had a wealth of knowledge about the lake and the forest. The photos she took were available for download later that afternoon and are included in the trip price. If you want to explore an area a little less traveled by tourists and get some exercise, I highly recommend Glacier Country Kayaks

As two mature women with one of us having little kayaking experience this trip was magical. Kylan our guide gave us a comprehensive orientation as to how to put on the safety gear and gave a great review of how to manoeuvre the kayak. The lake was calm and peaceful which enabled us to use the kayak confidently especially when we navigated the narrow river inlet. Kylan is a knowledgeable guide about the wildlife, glacier environment and some beautiful Maori legends. The private rainforest trail is delightful with some exquisite native plants and birds and culminated in morning tea in a “private cafe on the rocks” overlooking the lake and a flax weaving demo!! Blissful. This is truly a bucket list experience! We would highly recommend the 4 hour trip for the personal service that Kylan gave us. He is a great guide and a brilliant photographer capturing some superb close up shots of a white heron and native birds and photos of us kayaking which were then emailed to us after the trip. Thank you.

Fantastic afternoon spent kayaking on Lake Mapourika with our brilliant guide, Kylan. We loved the informative walk through the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary followed by tea/coffee and chats, before kayaking through the beautiful creek and heading back to enjoy sunset on the lake.
We were close to just renting kayaks ourselves but we’re so glad we went with the guided tour instead - we learned a lot about the area and Kylan showed us spots on the lake we wouldn’t have found ourselves.
Totally a must-do when around the Franz Josef area!

This was a great excursion from start to finish. Kilian, our guide, was happy to provide helpful information by phone in the days leading up to the trip and on the actual day, everything ran very smoothly.

He took us to some great secluded spots and gave plenty of interesting commentary throughout. He also knew the rainforest routes very well and although we didn't see any Kiwi birds, we saw their home.

The fact that he brought his own DSLR to take photos was a real bonus too as it meant we didn't have to worry about constantly accessing ours from the dry bags in the kayak.

A really good way to spend the afternoon.

This kayak tour gave us the space and time to explore Lake Mapourika and learn about its history as well as that of the glacial surrounds. We had an absolutely memorable time. Thanks Franz Josef Wilderness Tours!

I really enjoyed this trip, my guide was excellent and I definitely recommend choosing the kayaking trip which includes the hike as it made the trip an extra special experience. I was doubtful about kayaking as I am 70 years old and my partner didn’t want to come but I am so glad I went. I shared the guide’s kayak which made it very easy for me.

We had an awesome time at the lake. Our tour guide kylan was incredible, he made our day! We had so much fun. The people on our tour took their dog, who had never been in a kayak before and Kylan managed the whole tour perfectly. I can recommend this Kayak tour to anyone. It was amazing. Thank you so much

these people who own this company are all after the money. the night before the kayak tour was supposed to take off the weather got reallly reallllly bad. i called them but the office was closed. i called them the next morning and a jerk behind the desk answered the phone and said "i know the weather is bad but we cannot cancel..POLICY" I was like.. but its raining bad!! and the wind is picking up, he answered "POLICY, U HAD UR 24 HR for cancellation, u can choose not to come but u will pay". i went.. and oh my God... it was horrible and cold and these people are not well-equipped. the walking tour is something silly and fun at all. the tour guide saw that i was upset and told me "if u are going to give me trouble......i can send u back" i was stupid enough to say "me? no..im just sad and mad" i should have answered better and send her off swimming in that lake. how dare she!
anyway.. it was foggy as u can see in the pics.. and we didnt enjoy the tour a bit. the owner knows about this after i wrote about them on facebook. and he also think policy is policy :) p.s everyyyyyyyyyyy other activity in the area was cancelled because they knew that its better to have people enjoy their money and day and write a good review than take their money and make them feel horrible when not enjoying their foggy kayaking.
for the manager they are small company and they cant afford losing the money ;) so we the people should provide for them. logic..hhh

Hi Aline, As we explained over email to you, and on the phone the day of your trip, the weather on the day was not unsafe and actually not all that unusual or wet. It was set to clear up quickly that morning and with little wind, it was looking to be a good morning for a paddle. In your trips photo album from your tour (which we still have on file), it showed that the weather cleared quite quickly during your trip. You're guide even caught a few nice photos where you're smiling, and removed your raincoat. The other activities that were cancelled that day in Franz Josef were all flight activities which rely on clear skies for safety reasons to operate. We're lucky to be an activity which can operate in the rain. We received multiple emails from you, which threatened this poor review unless we provided you with a refund. We got in contact with your driver/guide from your tour group, who informed us that you were unhappy with all your NZ activities and he was not surprised. We do truly try our best to please all our customers, and are certainly not just trying to rip people off. We are a small company, but we do actually cancel many trips when the weather is truly unsafe. We hope that you managed to enjoy some aspects of your trip throughout NZ. Regards Bronwyn

We were a group of 3 adults and 2 teenagers. The weather wasn't great, and it rained some of the time, but it didn't matter a bit and we really enjoyed ourselves! The company provided waterproof gear and we used a mix of two double kayaks and a single kayak. Kylan was a friendly and knowledgeable guide, the forest was magical, and we were lucky enough to see two kotuku, including one really close-up. It was a great afternoon that was thoroughly enjoyed by all of us, thank you!
